Had a lovely day today while DS was with his and DD's Dad. Went around my hometown with DD and looked at old buildings. She knew more than me about most of it due to a school trip she just took. We went to a local pub and had a nice meal. Neither of us wanted to watch the TV so I asked if we could sit in a quiet area. Fortunately we were seated in a booth and the TV was muted. Or maybe it was just too far away for us to hear.

The moment we sat down a couple in their forties (I guess) turned to us and asked who we were voting for. I blinked and said "Sorry. Not sure what you're on about" and the lady pointed to the TV looking at me like I'd grown another head. I politely said "Oh we don't watch the Eurovision" and left it at that. Our food came and she loudly proclaimed that Spain's song was rather good.

I'm sure it is. But I literally hear nothing else at the moment and it's driving me bananas

AIBU in thinking it should all be over with or on late at night when no one's really awake?

And yes I am prepared to get flamed for this

I genuinely like the German song but it came last!

I quite liked it as well but I think the staging and production was dreadful. As GN said it looked like the backing band just hadn't bothered to turn up.

Abraxan · 15/05/2022 11:07

You don't like it, so you want everyone else to not be able to watch it easily? If someone spreads to you about it, just say that you're not a fan so don't have any opinion and move on.

I don't like football but have to put up with it taking over mainstream tv channels regularly, delaying other programmes, people talking about it all the time. Not just for special finals either - but lots of different matches that go in for weeks. Should that be related to late night Tv too because I don't like it and I can't be bothered listening to people drone in about it?

FitAt50 · 15/05/2022 11:09

I feel the same about football and that's forced down our throats every week and in almost every pub. Eurovision is once a year so get over yourself.

Abraxan · 15/05/2022 11:14

But I literally hear nothing else at the moment

But I thought you spent most of the day hearing from your dd talking about old buildings?
So not hearing about Eurovision all the time surely, other than two comments from a couple sat near you in the evening - at the time it was being shown on a tv in a pub you chose to eat in?

Vikinga · 15/05/2022 11:17

Yes and can we also be done with football, big brother, love island and everything else that I'm not personally interested in, please?

I haven't watched Eurovision in years but used to love it. I didn't realise until yesterday afternoon that it was on.

ilovesooty · 15/05/2022 11:17

I love both football and Eurovision. I see the OP hasn't been back.

Normally don't watch all of Eurovision ( the results are the most interesting)but watched last night to see if Ukraine would win.
Loved every cheesy minute of it. I actually thought it was pretty good last night. Still gutted that Moldova didn't do better 🤣.
It's pretty easy to avoid, but seems a bit strange that you wanted to fun police a once a year event that 180 million people enjoy.

They did pretty well. It was a great moment when the public vote came in and they shot up the leaderboard.

I genuinely like the German song but it came last! That’s either an indication of my musical tastes or political voting at work ( and the U.K. not on the receiving end for once 😁)
it did remind me of another song but I can’t think of the name. As did the Swedish song which was also great and rightly did well.

We loved the German song in our house! And the singer sounded like someone but we can't work out who.

Didn't think Spain's entry was all that tbh, but the rest of the world seemed to love it.

Anyway I loved it last night. DS2 was watching the scores through his fingertips Grin

Oysterbabe · 15/05/2022 11:23

I didn't hate the German song but found the rap section a bit cringe. It was like a cross between the Streets and Eminem.

Livpool · 15/05/2022 11:43

I don't like Eurovision either but why do you care so much? Your annoyance and attitude seems a bit bizarre

Chickychoccyegg · 15/05/2022 11:51

There's loads of things on TV that I'm not interested in, I've never felt these things should either be taken off TV or put on in the middle of the night so I don't see them 😂 this is obviously a joke post with you mentioning bananas.... I loved that song too.
Honestly the eurovision is great, what's not to like, it's light hearted, fun, and only on once a year, so easy to avoid if you're not interested.

MarshaBradyo · 15/05/2022 11:57

I enjoyed the Euros and I’m really pleased he did well

In all the crap we’ve been through for years I’ll gladly take some lighthearted fun instead

WeDontShutUpAboutBruno · 15/05/2022 12:06

"How can I get lots of attention whilst stealth boasting about my child? I know, I'll insult the euroviosion, on eurovision day"

Well played op😂

I like the German one as well, was surprised it didn't get any points.
People on twitter were saying it sounded like a Lewis Capaldi song but I'm not sure which one.

FirewomanSam · 15/05/2022 12:14

@Oysterbabe I said to my husband that it sounded like Eminem with an acoustic guitar! I didn’t think it was great but didn’t think it was only-six-points bad.

Yep.
We all had a family wager - a whole £5 at stake 💷! - about who was going to come second (figured Ukraine was going to come first) and I picked Germany! I thought it was a good song.

One of my DDs picked France who I think were second last! DH picked Moldova🙄and younger DDs picked Sweden and UK, so they obviously have their fingers on the Eurovision pulse!

SteelAspidistra · 15/05/2022 12:56

I just can't bring myself to watch it and basically tune anything out that I hear about it

And yet here you are, posting on a thread about it...

mathanxiety · 16/05/2022 16:41

Apropos of nothing, I had a little flutter on Germany coming last based on my opinion that it sucked. Mind you, I liked France, so my musical taste clearly needs a little fine tuning.

I dissuaded my friend from betting on the UK to come last. I also provided her with my predictions for the first 4, all of which proved to be correct.

She didn't actually put a bet on and spent a lot of yesterday afternoon moaning about Casualty being cancelled.
😃

I must be on the same as you, math. France was my favorite too!

I didn't understand why Germany didn't get any jury points. It was a bit bland, but no more than Belgium, which did much better. I was very glad they got few points from the audience at least. They seems to take it in their stride

Springhassprung86 · 16/05/2022 18:20

“I don’t like something that is on for one evening a year therefore it should be banned so nobody can enjoy it”
yabvu, weird and self centred.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 16/05/2022 22:21

You "literally hear nothing else at the moment" but you had a lovely day? Obviously then you were hearing about plenty of other things that you enjoyed hearing about. So how is Eurovision driving you bananas? You REALLY need to get a sense of proportion.

Exceedingly appropriately, it was Terry Wogan who used to talk about the people who would sit at home glued to their television or radio, just waiting to be offended!

So many things to choose to watch/listen to/read/do out there and such a tiny percentage of it that you'll ever get chance to do in your life; why ever would you waste it focusing on what you don't like, just so you can have a good old superior grumble to people who don't care and are equally baffled that you like to watch things that you don't like!

Didn't think Spain's entry was all that tbh, but the rest of the world seemed to love it.

I might have a vague idea what possibly added 'value' for some viewers. And it isn't just me thinking that, either: I have a group of friends who, as it happens, are Polish milkmaids, and they think exactly the same as me....

I think one issue that it's easy to overlook is that nobody actively 'gives' anybody else nul points: they merely don't give them any of their 10 points allocations. You could be everybody's 11th favourite song - and 11th out of 25/26 isn't that bad at all - but you won't get any points whatsoever. Meanwhile, theoretically, another act whose song almost everybody utterly detests and which makes them want to cut off their ears, might have one country who absolutely loves it for their own personal taste reasons or one of them is Greece and the other is Cyprus and they would walk away with 12 points, thus likely avoiding the very bottom slot or two.
