Had a lovely day today while DS was with his and DD's Dad. Went around my hometown with DD and looked at old buildings. She knew more than me about most of it due to a school trip she just took. We went to a local pub and had a nice meal. Neither of us wanted to watch the TV so I asked if we could sit in a quiet area. Fortunately we were seated in a booth and the TV was muted. Or maybe it was just too far away for us to hear.

The moment we sat down a couple in their forties (I guess) turned to us and asked who we were voting for. I blinked and said "Sorry. Not sure what you're on about" and the lady pointed to the TV looking at me like I'd grown another head. I politely said "Oh we don't watch the Eurovision" and left it at that. Our food came and she loudly proclaimed that Spain's song was rather good.

I'm sure it is. But I literally hear nothing else at the moment and it's driving me bananas

AIBU in thinking it should all be over with or on late at night when no one's really awake?

And yes I am prepared to get flamed for this

Get over it. It's one night. I have to put up with people going on about football and manage just fine.

SuspiciousBanana · 15/05/2022 08:23

I watch it and usually get enjoyment from how cynical I can be about the entries, usually how crap we are! Its fun and it’s silly. There’s year though, fuck me the quality was good, even the shit songs were great! We were totally BRILLIANT! Ukraine’s song was pretty decent and the gesture from the voting public was nice to see.

it’s harmless fun.

YABU.

MarshaBradyo · 15/05/2022 08:25

Out of all the things to want to be over it’s not this

I didn’t watch, but did stream U.K. Sam song. He was great. Good on him, brilliant

EnterFunnyNameHere · 15/05/2022 08:31

Where on earth do you live that eurovision has become inescapable?? I didn't even know it was on until yesterday!

That aside, I hardly think sitting in a pub where you specifically said you couldn't hear it, and one person asking one question, justifies getting rid of something which brings so much joy to so many people.

I don't like soaps, they are on when I'd like to be watching telly and on occasion, their plot lines are in the press/talked about at work. Personally though I don't like them so they should obvs be cancelled forever, yes?

LaurieFairyCake · 15/05/2022 08:35

I had no idea it was even on as I don't watch live tv

It must be the easiest thing to avoid in the world Grin

IDontDrinkTea · 15/05/2022 08:40

This is such a mumsnet post 😂

“I want to ban something that 180million people watched live and enjoyed last night because it prompted a stranger to make an innocent comment to me. As a side note, my child is intelligent and cultured”

Surprised you were eating out and not cooking the fictional mumsnet chicken

I love this little detail.

Yes indeed.

It's on for one day a year. Why get so upset about it?

Not even that. It's 4 hours, one day a year.

Well done Sam.

Isn't it. It even had 'a lock'. Bonus points for attributing a preceved message to that look.

It reads like a skit from something that might have been on The Catherine Tate Show. One where a family is so cultured and a cut above the rest. Who are horrified to find themselves amongst the hoi polloi and, shock horror, televisions.

AnImaginaryCat · 15/05/2022 09:02

Oh, apologies OP, I just thought you most like won't know what The Catherine Tate Show is. You might even need to quote this an wrote "Who?".

My child is very intelligent and cultured, as am I, but we eat dinner in a pub with a TV.

MajorCarolDanvers · 15/05/2022 09:04

UK coming second will have revived the public interest in Eurovision for at least another decade.

So suck it up OP. 😂😂😂

MajorCarolDanvers · 15/05/2022 09:07

Sorry. Not sure what you're on about

Wee contradiction here

I literally hear nothing else at the moment and it's driving me bananas

How did you not know what she was on about when you literally hear nothing else at the moment?

Antarcticant · 15/05/2022 09:17

on late at night when no one's really awake?

It's a live broadcast - that's the point of it. No point showing it later on as the results will be all over the place as a spoiler. It didn't finish till gone midnight anyway!

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 15/05/2022 09:33

The ESC is very easy to avoid. You can:

a) not watch it
b) not go to pubs streaming it

Its that simple. I hadn’t watched it for years and usually have no idea it’s on. It doesn’t really encroach on your life in any way if you don’t want it to.

I watched for the first time in years last night and it was fantastic! Sam was amazing.

cottagegardenflower · 15/05/2022 09:37

I never usually watch it, but am now doing so in iPlayer. Not sure I'll make to the end it all in one go but I'm loving it. The songs are great and the presentation brilliant. The fast turnaround of songs is so much better than when I last (years ago) watched it.

LittleStarBar · 15/05/2022 09:53

brookstar · 15/05/2022 07:29

I just knew there would be someone moaning about Eurovision on here! It's become such a miserable place.

It's once a year - I'm sure people can cope!

Personally I thought it was great. Watching the results come in was so exciting.

I'm on another forum & there's somebody moaning on there today, 'Everybody at my work knew Ukraine was gonna win so why did anybody bother to watch. Pointless & it was rigged'.

Er, because last time I checked, you could watch ANY other channel & it wouldn't of been on. And I didn't know they were going to win. I was genuinely surprised & touched by it. Even if it was rigged (I don't think it was) but...

Let them have a tiny sliver of happiness.

Oh, & OP, you are a fun sponge. Go to a cultural pub without a TV next time.

Pugdogmom · 15/05/2022 10:07

Normally don't watch all of Eurovision ( the results are the most interesting)but watched last night to see if Ukraine would win.
Loved every cheesy minute of it. I actually thought it was pretty good last night. Still gutted that Moldova didn't do better 🤣.
It's pretty easy to avoid, but seems a bit strange that you wanted to fun police a once a year event that 180 million people enjoy.

octopusrus · 15/05/2022 10:21

Bet you're fun at parties OP 😂

Giraffesandbottoms · 15/05/2022 10:23

I usually forget it’s on and last night was no exception, but I was equally shocked and delighted to see that we had come 2nd 😬

CiderWithLizzie · 15/05/2022 10:31

Give that wolf 🐺 a banana 🍌!

Ithinkwemightgetaholiday · 15/05/2022 10:36

Why does it matter that the couple were in their 40s? (Pointing out you're significantly younger?) And why did you have to blink before you replied? 😂

Plumbear2 · 15/05/2022 11:01

I watched it as a kid just as my kids watched it when they where small, it was a fun family event. No it shouldn't be put on late at night just to suit you 😆 get over yourself.

sashagabadon · 15/05/2022 11:02

I genuinely like the German song but it came last! That’s either an indication of my musical tastes or political voting at work ( and the U.K. not on the receiving end for once 😁)
it did remind me of another song but I can’t think of the name. As did the Swedish song which was also great and rightly did well.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 15/05/2022 11:05

This has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've read on here.
YOU don't like a tv programme so YOU think it should be on when everyone is asleep. What about the millions of people who do like it?

Exactly. On that basis I think Eastenders should be on at 3 am. This thread has to be a wind up surely?
