Eurovision... Can it please be done now?

Had a lovely day today while DS was with his and DD's Dad. Went around my hometown with DD and looked at old buildings. She knew more than me about most of it due to a school trip she just took. We went to a local pub and had a nice meal. Neither of us wanted to watch the TV so I asked if we could sit in a quiet area. Fortunately we were seated in a booth and the TV was muted. Or maybe it was just too far away for us to hear.

The moment we sat down a couple in their forties (I guess) turned to us and asked who we were voting for. I blinked and said "Sorry. Not sure what you're on about" and the lady pointed to the TV looking at me like I'd grown another head. I politely said "Oh we don't watch the Eurovision" and left it at that. Our food came and she loudly proclaimed that Spain's song was rather good.

I'm sure it is. But I literally hear nothing else at the moment and it's driving me bananas

AIBU in thinking it should all be over with or on late at night when no one's really awake?

And yes I am prepared to get flamed for this

OP posts:

I blinked and said "Sorry. Not sure what you're on about"

You actually said that? A bit rude and not in the spirit of Eurovision.

Anyway, what a strange and convoluted post with lots of unnecessary detail just to say you don’t like EV.. If you were bored by this woman’s attempt to make small talk, did you not think we may be bored by all the detail in your post?

Dauncets · 15/05/2022 01:29

Unsure what historical buildings and home towns have to do with it though.

Agreed.

Maybe OP is in love with a fairytale?

perhaps asserting their intelligence quotient so we know they live on a higher plane than Eurovision and other such 'plebian entertainment'...

Ifailed · 15/05/2022 07:20

I blinked and said "Sorry. Not sure what you're on about"

To be fair to the OP, if some stranger had wandered up to me and said the same yesterday I wouldn't have known what they were on about.

KatherineJaneway · 15/05/2022 07:22

So you had no idea what she was on about but it was driving you mad?

DisforDarkChocolate · 15/05/2022 07:26

I love it. Last night had some great music, a little bit of bonkers music and Mika's set was amazing. I'm actually gutted I went to bed before the score came in seeing as we did so well.

brookstar · 15/05/2022 07:29

I just knew there would be someone moaning about Eurovision on here! It's become such a miserable place.

It's once a year - I'm sure people can cope!

Personally I thought it was great. Watching the results come in was so exciting.

SpringRainbow · 15/05/2022 07:32

I haven’t seen Eurovision for years but my eldest wanted to watch it (any excuse to cheer the UK on).

They loved it all and they are still singing about feedings the wolf a banana.

The coming together for Ukraine was amazing. I’m also shocked that we came second.

Even though I didn’t want to put it on, I’m glad I did for my as both my children enjoyed it and it opened up a lot of discussion.

brookstar · 15/05/2022 07:35

AIBU in thinking it should all be over with or on late at night when no one's really awake?

This has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've read on here.
YOU don't like a tv programme so YOU think it should be on when everyone is asleep. What about the millions of people who do like it?

dudsville · 15/05/2022 07:37

I'm oblivious except for threads on mn. Yesterday I went to a large town to meet friends for a coffee, came home, all public transport, not even a whisper of it. But if someone asked me about it or told me about it I wouldn't be frustrated about it. I heard from OH just moments ago that ukraine one and we came 2nd. Great! It doesn't hurt me to know this.

You know how a lot of men routinely ask why there's an IWD (completely oblivious to the existence of IMD) and say how unnecessary and ridiculous it all is - before being smartly told that every other day is basically IMD?
**
Well, this is the frivolous TV/hobby equivalent of that. Sport is absolutely everywhere throughout the year and dominating the TV schedules, forcing the rest of the programmes to be cancelled, postponed, moved to another channel where we miss them or, if we're 'lucky', only delayed by half an hour or so.
**
People - especially men - will speak as though everybody loves it and will ask which team you support. When you tell them you're not interested in football, they'll still persist as to which team you 'would' support etc. Constantly boring on about it, many of them - all through the year.
**
We Eurovision fans get two relatively low-key semi-finals, which sit there quietly on BBC3 or BBC4 for those who are interested to watch, but otherwise unmentioned; and ONE four-hour evening/night each year. We don't even have the 'Making Your Mind Up' (or similar) televised song selection process any more.
**
We get that loads of people don't like/don't care/hate it - and that's totally fine. Life would be boring if we all liked the same thing. However, if we're seriously talking about popular hobbies that are culturally forced on to people who aren't interested in them, I could think of dozens that are way higher in their impact on non-fans than Eurovision ever will be.
**
Incidentally, have you seen all of the thuggery, hatred, misogyny, vindictiveness, in-fighting, aggression, angry tribalism, grudges and other violence that goes hand-in-hand with Eurovision, with fans using Eurovision as 'justification' for their behaviour? No, you won't have done....

Well said. So true!!!

I’m not a Eurovision fan but watched it last night and so glad I did.

Oysterbabe · 15/05/2022 07:39

It's very easily avoided if you don't like it. Leave those of us who love it in peace.

TheChurchOfEli · 15/05/2022 07:41

But I literally hear nothing else at the moment
Where are you hearing “ nothing else”? If you’re glued to your TV maybe, so turn it off. We have the radio on all day until DD goes to bed and didn’t have a clue it was today as had heard nothing about it, until I saw it listed (and a friend messaged DP to say The Rasmus were on, major nostalgia vibes).

Not my thing but we absolved that by simply not watching. It’s a fascinating concept I know but try it.

AtticAttack3000 · 15/05/2022 07:41

I feel like the OP is doing a satire, but I'm not quite clever enough to get it

CallMeNutribullet · 15/05/2022 07:51

Op I've not watched it for years, not the same without Wogan. However other people enjoy it.
It's totally weird to want to end a competition other people like just because you don't. Just don't watch it!

Whatafustercluck · 15/05/2022 07:54

I used to tune in primarily for Terry Wogan's comments to be honest. Dh and I would have a little wager on who would win.

Tuned in last night when I heard the gobsmacking news that the UK was leading the score board. We had people over and it was an absolute blast watching the results come in.

Yabu op. The sound was off. What harm was it doing to you?

Bretonbear · 15/05/2022 07:59

BadLad · 15/05/2022 01:24

Went around my hometown with DD and looked at old buildings. She knew more than me about most of it due to a school trip she just took.

I love this little detail.

Me too! 😂😂😂

Luculentus · 15/05/2022 08:04

You "literally hear nothing else at the moment" but you had a lovely day? Obviously then you were hearing about plenty of other things that you enjoyed hearing about. So how is Eurovision driving you bananas? You REALLY need to get a sense of proportion.

sashagabadon · 15/05/2022 08:04

I enjoyed it too. If Ukraine are unable to physically host next year, U.K. should offer venue and support to help.

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 15/05/2022 08:04

Sorry OP but you sound like a fun sponge.

It's on once a year Hmm

Luculentus · 15/05/2022 08:08

Bit sad that your DD knows more about the town you live in than you do, OP. Maybe you could have spent the rest of the day finding out more and you could have blocked out even more of Eurovision.

Simplelobsterhat · 15/05/2022 08:10

I'm not sure I understand the problem? You sat somewhere and couldn't see or hear the TV but one person started some polite small talk with you, so you think eurovision should be banned or put on in the middle of the night.

I have no interest in football and often find people are talking about it (and not just for a few days a year as they do with eurovision), but I just don't watch it, don't chose to go places that are showing it or if I do don't sit in front of it. I certainly don't think it should be banned or only on at night, because I know many others do enjoy it.

Not sure of the relevance of the rest of your day unless what is upsetting you is that your cultured and educational day was somehow tainted by people, shock horror, enjoying some popular culture near you? In which case maybe chose somewhere other than a pub with a TV for dinner next time?

Also not sure how you have heard about nothing else- I'd forgotten it was on this weekend until a couple of days ago as I feel there has been less hype than there used to be. You could only have heard the occasional mention / song played unless you actively decided to watch the semi finals etc.

Heronwatcher · 15/05/2022 08:10

It was on the TV FFS! She was making conversation! Probably would have made a comment about sport/ weather/ election etc in the same way. And it’s one night a year. You seem a bit joyless, it’s not a badge of honour to not like Eurovision! Maybe next time only frequent venues which show a live feed from the Barbican around this time of year?

DyingForACuppa · 15/05/2022 08:15

I am so with you OP, I hate it when other peoples enjoyment intersects with my life for at most a few hours. How dare strangers try to make freindly small talk with you in a social place. I too am a raging narrcicist who thinks that anything I don't personally love should be ended right away.

PriamFarrl · 15/05/2022 08:15

Oh honestly.
What a misery. It’s one day and it’s easily avoided. One person mentioned it to you in a pub and you start a whole thread about it.
I don’t watch Strictly or X Factor or shows like that. I don’t care about Johnny Depp and this divorce trial. People mention that in passing and I say I don’t know as I don’t watch. I don’t moan that that should be on the TV in the middle of the night just because I don’t like it.

I had friends over last night to watch. They said on the way over there were loads of people all clearly heading off to other peoples houses for Eurovision parties.

FirewomanSam · 15/05/2022 08:16

So a stranger rather loudly said ‘Spain’s song is quite good’ and that’s annoyed you so much that you think the whole of Eurovision should be cancelled forever 😂

Eurovision is one of the absolute top highlights of my year, I look forward to it like Christmas and I throw an absolutely cracker of a Eurovision party every year. You don’t have to like it but that doesn’t mean it should be cancelled for everyone!

I don’t watch football but I don’t post threads asking if football should be cancelled forever because a match was once on in a pub I went to 🙄
