Eurovision... Can it please be done now?

Had a lovely day today while DS was with his and DD's Dad. Went around my hometown with DD and looked at old buildings. She knew more than me about most of it due to a school trip she just took. We went to a local pub and had a nice meal. Neither of us wanted to watch the TV so I asked if we could sit in a quiet area. Fortunately we were seated in a booth and the TV was muted. Or maybe it was just too far away for us to hear.

The moment we sat down a couple in their forties (I guess) turned to us and asked who we were voting for. I blinked and said "Sorry. Not sure what you're on about" and the lady pointed to the TV looking at me like I'd grown another head. I politely said "Oh we don't watch the Eurovision" and left it at that. Our food came and she loudly proclaimed that Spain's song was rather good.

I'm sure it is. But I literally hear nothing else at the moment and it's driving me bananas

AIBU in thinking it should all be over with or on late at night when no one's really awake?

And yes I am prepared to get flamed for this

I slept through most of Eurovision tonight so will watch it back tomorrow if I can. I think there’s been so much negativity in the world and so many sad and scary things going on that the Eurovision has been something positive for people to focus on for a change.

It has been an opportunity for Europe to stand in solidarity with Ukraine and call for peace. I saw the very end of the show and thought it was quite powerful moving.

Dauncets · 15/05/2022 01:43

It was fucking AWESOME 🤩🤩💕

Not much point watching it after the event I would have thought really. Although at least you'd be able to speeeeed it up. And then if you like you could slow it down 😉

HAHAHA God I love Eurovision and tonight was just THE BEST I'm back home after a party and I am BUZZING

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/05/2022 01:43

Unsure what historical buildings and home towns have to do with it though.

That's what I think during the breaks between Eurovision songs.😆

Dauncets · 15/05/2022 01:47

But really how it turned out tonight, that's what Eurovision does best. Pretty much everyone who gave a shit and could vote, across the whole of Europe, supported the Ukrainian people. (Let's leave aside the question of their govt for now.) And the UK and Spain finally put decent songs through and got the results from them. Couldn't have been better.

Agreed.

Maybe OP is in love with a fairytale?

Take a bow, that is brilliant

Absobloodylutely. It was a fantastic show.
Sam Ryder was bloody brilliant.
Sorry you deserve a flaming OP you are being totally unreasonable.

I'M UP IN SPACE MAAA-AAA-AAN

Yayyyy😂

IEatChocolateForBreakfast · 15/05/2022 01:54

I have never seen it. I don't understand the hype. I always thought (from what I'd heard discussed) that it was some horrible tacky excuse of a show / competition with terrible songs and just a pure cheese-fest.

The popularity of it baffles me. But yes, I'm saying it as I've never even seen it. I just can't bring myself to watch it and basically tune anything out that I hear about it

Dauncets · 15/05/2022 01:57

He really was very good wasn't he? I didn't think so much of it before but seeing him there in the stadium especially when the camera panned out and the way he filled the space with his voice, it was amazing 🥰🤩

He seems like a genuinely nice lad as well and very committed to the whole Eurovision thing which is a refreshing change for us.

Did feel sorry for Estonia though, I thought that lad did a great performance and he certainly got all the crowd going with him. They deserved more points.

Thedogscollar · 15/05/2022 02:04

Could be staged in UK next year😁

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/05/2022 02:12

Estonia's entry was the perfect close to an amazing Eurovision.😍

Dauncets · 15/05/2022 02:17

@IEatChocolateForBreakfast I am a lifelong Eurovision fan and can tell you that yes Eurovision does have some cheesy songs. But there is a lot more to it than that. And it changes through the ages.

It's been going since the post war austere 50s when it started with a handful of countries all of them on the edge economically and only shakily politically united.

As time has gone on countries have been variously added, imploded, become independent, broken free from fascism and communism, gone to war etc and they've all come to Eurovision to sing. Bosnia sent an act that reached the venue after dodging sniper fire on take off from Sarajevo. When Germany won the singer did a gig on the Gaza strip. Ireland won repeatedly when Irish politicians couldn't be broadcast on UK news.

Every country does a different act every year and they really are all different. Some of them reflect the music of the time, some reference earlier times, some reflect national identity : it's completely free range and you never know what people are going to come up with next but all of it recognisably comes from Europe.

I love it completely and watching the UK get loads of points tonight for the first time in decades was amazing 🥰 and being told that everyone in Europe who voted, pretty much, voted for Ukraine was amazing too.

It is splendid.

Dauncets · 15/05/2022 02:28

ALSO : the most iconic Eurovision song by the most iconic Eurovision group ie the global force that is ABBA ... is called Waterloo. I mean that is its name. The name of the battle that, for a time at least, ended fighting in Europe. Now with spandex and glitter. I mean how cool is that?

Even though it hurts?

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 15/05/2022 02:38

Strange hill to choose to die on. Just ignore it if you aren't interested. Lots of people enjoy it!

ilovesooty · 15/05/2022 03:03

Goodness - it's on once a year. What a ridiculous whinge.

mathanxiety · 15/05/2022 03:06

What are you getting out of this performative contrariness and counter culturalistic lark?

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/05/2022 03:33

Four hours once a year... it's such a terrible hardship for you to bear.

If there are things on tv that are popular and you really really don't like them, I'd suggest checking pubs for tv's before sitting down in them for a meal. It's quite easy to do this, because televisions in pubs are typically quite large.

I guess the point of the pre-amble about looking at old buildings was to let all of us tacky idiots who like Eurovision know that you are a proper educated and sensible person!

How very lovely for you - did you know, I also quite like old buildings, I am a big fan of the gargoyle and grotesque trend and wish that would come back, we need more monsters widdling and vomiting off the corners of buildings.

Doesn't mean I can't appreciate a few hours of fun, interesting, unusual music and of course, Graham being a little bit bitchy..

sashh · 15/05/2022 05:03

Which pub and town OP?

Very few will mute the TV when I ask.

Fluval · 15/05/2022 05:12

I’m not a massive fan of Eurovision and rarely enjoy any of the songs (this year, the first I’ve watched in a while, was no exception) but it’s not like it’s never ending, wall-to-wall coverage. Very easy to avoid if you want to. Not really sure what your objection is, OP.

knittingaddict · 15/05/2022 05:39

I watched some of it for the first time in years. A combination if being at our daughter's house for a takeaway and wanting to see how Europe would join together in support of Ukraine. Somehow it felt special this year.

Honestly I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the performances. I thought lots of the songs were very good and I'm even tempted to buy the cd.

I'm hoping this is another wind up and that you're not as miserable as you sound

LakieLady · 15/05/2022 06:07

I think the last time I saw it was when Abba won. Most year's I don't even know when it's on.

It's easier to avoid than football.

Sagealicious · 15/05/2022 06:31

You want Eurovision to disappear so you decide to start a thread about Eurovision where shock horror everyone will be talking about...Eurovision.

pamplemoussee · 15/05/2022 06:32

Wow it's on once a year - it brings lots of people a lot of joy and it was brilliant last night!! If you don't like it fine but don't bring everyone else down about it and your certainly being unreasonable to moan about it

TulipCat · 15/05/2022 06:42

Love a bit of Eurovision! Their ambitions of unity are much more palpable than say, the Olympics. Bet that poor woman in the pub wished she hadn't bothered being friendly to you though OP!
