To not understand why women box?

Choufleurfromage · 13/05/2022 06:30

Not a fan of boxing as a 'sport' in general and given the hysteria over football/rugby tacking and head injuries, am surprised such a violent contact sport is still allowed.
Also, at the risk of being oxymoronic, I really do think women shouldn't be banned from doing stuff, but boxing is just so uncouth, ugly and violent, I cannot understand why women would want to do it; ok, it offers opportunities for disadvantaged youngsters (plenty of evidence of this), it creates discipline and focus, but it is still 2 people battering each other for no reason...
I am sure iabu, and am not suggesting women only pursue 'dainty' sports or activities, but boxing?

Maybe because they like it?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 13/05/2022 06:35

You see, I don’t understand why anyone boxes but I don’t understand why you’re taking issue with women boxing. Why is it that that troubles you but not men boxing?

DDivaStar · 13/05/2022 06:38

I can't understand why anyone would want to box. Not for training but actually fights.

I don't separate my dislike if men.or wonens boxing.

litlealligator · 13/05/2022 06:39

Because they want to and it's literally none of your business.

Read the post properly. I said I don't like boxing in general. I do NOT have an issue with women boxing, as stated on original post, I asked why they do it as it is something I do not understand.
Specsavers?

I don't box but I've competed in contact sports and it's good fun.

If you have a problem with the sport in itself why aren't you questioning why men box too?

carefullycourageous · 13/05/2022 06:41

I dislike boxing personally, but what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Yabu for being deeply sexist.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 13/05/2022 06:42

You say you're not suggesting women only do 'dainty' sports, but you really are. Women can do whatever sport they want. Boxing is great fun and a fantastic workout.

diddlydiddlysquat · 13/05/2022 06:43

Maybe it's a stupid way for me to describe this because I know nothing about boxing as I dislike it so much but how come boxing is allowed but I'm not allowed or will get in trouble by the police if I punch my neighbour in the face in a controlled environment where my DH could pull me back if it gets too much. Plus my pita neighbour would also consent this as he would also like to punch me back for calling out his cf behaviour.

Why does your post focus just on women boxing then, if your thoughts apply equally to both sexes?

Choufleurfromage · 13/05/2022 06:43

litlealligator · 13/05/2022 06:39

Because they want to and it's literally none of your business.

I asked a simple question borne out of curiosity. I am not interfering in anyone's choice to box ffs. So wind your neck in, unless asking a question is not allowed in your world

Just another example of not really understanding something you've never done before.

People like doing the things they do.

ClaryFairchild · 13/05/2022 06:44

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross doesn't need Specsavers, @Choufleurfromage. You might say you don't like boxing at all but your title was aimed specifically at women. Perhaps take a bit more time writing out your posts and then you wouldn't need to be snarky at people who call you out for being sexist.

CounsellorTroi · 13/05/2022 06:45

What about Tae Kwondo/Kick boxing? Do you think women should not do that?

NutellaEllaElla · 13/05/2022 06:45

I agree with you op. And while logically, I don't understand why anyone would box, I honestly think that with all their hormones (!!), too much testosterone and social hierarchy based on dominance, men want to beat the shit out of each other.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 13/05/2022 06:46

Generalisations help no one

Oblomov22 · 13/05/2022 06:46

The boxing itself, the glove coming into contact with any part of the opponents body is such a small part of it. The training, the discipline, the effect it has on your brain, the different way your brain reacts, how you feel about your self, is a large part of it. The teaching, the stance, the core muscles, moving and ducking and diving, taking your chances, knowing when the attack and when to defend. No different to a professional athlete, a rower, any other sort of martial art, judo, karate, Taekwondo, jiu-jitsu. In some of these there is very little physical contact, and chance of unjury not high, brain damage even less.

Colourfulrainbows · 13/05/2022 06:47

I go kickboxing. Don't spa as of yet is early days.
Why do i go? Because its brilliant activity/sport. Full body workout. Good for mental health.
It's so much more than hitting. There is way you punch / kick stance etc.

People are friendly. Out of all the exercises classes I have ever been to nothing has been as good as to kickboxing. It's high stamina.

You clearly do have an issue with women boxing - you describe it as “uncouth, ugly, and violent” and then go on to say that you don’t understand why wonen do it. Not that you don’t understand why people do it. Women. Which implies that it’s fine for men to be uncouth, ugly and violent. That, however much you want to backtrack now and pretend that you are not sexist, is the wording of someone who has an issue with women boxing.

I can read and interpret nuance just fine: it’s not my problem if you’re so bad at expressing yourself that you don’t understand what you’re communicating when you write.

Traumdeuter · 13/05/2022 06:51

Because it’s fun. I trained at a boxing gym for about 5 years and it was 95 per cent skipping, push-ups, punching the bags and pads, learning to be quick and deft and strong. I sparred about 3-4 times and it was body blows only, even when sparring with women who boxed in proper matches. I was incredibly fit and strong when I trained like this and I’d love to go back to it - stopped when I became pregnant. One day!

Offandonagain · 13/05/2022 06:52

What would be classed s as a dainty sport op?

AnImaginaryCat · 13/05/2022 06:55

Katie Taylor is probably the least uncouth, ugly and violent boxer, perhaps athlete, Ireland has ever had. I dislike boxing as a whole, but she brings something positive to it. She is incredibly skilled and disaplined, such an amazing role model.

InChocolateWeTrust · 13/05/2022 06:56

Op your language implies that for some reason it's less understandable/reasonable that women might enjoy it than men.

Isnt it quite good for fitness/cardio etc

BishyBarnyBee · 13/05/2022 06:59

I agree with you OP. Traditional boxing is a horrendous sport where the ultimate aim is to give the opponent concussion. It causes enormous long term.damage to the brain. The famous discipline and training could be found more positively in any of the wide range of martial arts that don't involve hurting your opponent.
There is something quite unpleasant about people wanting to watch something where the whole point is to see someone get hurt. The added dimension of it being two women makes it even more unpleasant and I'd question the motivation of some viewers.
Being excited about equality for women in boxing is like being excited about women's right to be serial killers. It's not progress to mimic the most offensive aspects of masculine culture.
