A non-food shop so like matalan, new look, next etc as long as she is in a sling and doesn't touch the floor?

@Cherrypies no you didn't, you agreed with the poster that said I will look like a tit if I walk about with my pup in a sling and you said yes very much so

Many shops allow it, John Lewis for example. So do most pubs etc. just check the website, I wouldn’t ask here you’ll get into a debate about whether people like dogs or not - when in reality is what makes financial sense for the business.
who spends more money in the pub- me or Miserable Mildred? Me, therefore publican happy to see me and my dog.

I'm taking her with me tonight. Thanks for input though

Nice to know that you're so self-absorbed that you don't actually give a damn. Nobody wants a dog in a clothes shop. Less so, the staff fussing over it and then not washing their hands before going back to stocking shelves.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 11/05/2022 14:14

My dogs love a shopping centre…they get so excited they run around like lunatics!

You let your dogs run around the shopping centre like lunatics?

No, I did not, check again
I will wait

manzolini · 11/05/2022 14:15

@Hallyup89 but some do, clearly.

I see the usual suspects are about, yes the Mumsnet dog haters! 🐶🐶🐶❤️❤️❤️

godmum56 · 11/05/2022 14:17

The correct answer of course is to ask the shop. There is no law in the UK that says that shopkeepers must or must not allow animals in shops except IIRC in food prep areas. Personally I wouldn't as I think it could be overwhelming for the puppy.

Wilco allow it.

Wilkos don't allow it - although some customers get away with it sometimes.

I don’t think the world should pander to irrational fears in all tbh

A puppy off the ground in a sling will do absolutely nothing to anyone

Well that's sort of the point isn't it, who gets to decide who's fear is rationale and who's isn't. That is why it is called a phobia!

moita · 11/05/2022 14:19

We live near the countryside. Well behaved dogs are accepted in most shops.

DogInATent · 11/05/2022 14:21

A dog is a dog regardless of age, being on a lead, in a sling, or in a pram. The only exception are assistance dogs (although I'm getting suspicious about the explosion in self-IDed ESD).

Go by the shop rules. Some are ok, some aren't.

Wilko’s definitely allow it in a majority of their stores. They made a huge announcement on their social media pages a couple of months ago…and if I remember correctly someone did a thread on it.

@manzolini some dogs get more anxious and stressed out in settings like a busy shop etc . They can find public settlings over stimulating. Dogs are more sensitive to noise. Shops can be very warm aswell. Shops are not designed for dogs comfort. I wouldn't do that to my dogs. Assistance dogs have been trained to deal with these situations. Its different if you are sitting outside in a café, dogs can sit under the table in the shade. I know my three dogs wouldn't like it. They love going for long walks by the river or on the beach etc There are plenty of dog friendly activities you can do instead. Plus lots of stress reliving activities to do with your dog to get it used to be at home alone for an hour or two

OP asked the shop, and they are fine with her taking her puppy.
So your opinion doesn't really matter.

Wilko do allow dogs.

People taking dogs into shops is a slow creep. People on this thread are saying give it a try and if no one says anything it's fine. In my experience people don't really like confrontation, so if they don't like seeing a dog in a shop they're probably not going to say anything. It doesn't means it okay. I probably wouldn't say anything to the owner because I don't want a mouthful and I'd have to be seriously riled to say something to an employee as they have enough crap to deal with.

As an aside someone was saying at the weekend that they have to put a nappy on their dog when they go into a shop because the dog has cocked it's leg too many times. I'm sure the dog would rather be outdoors than risk getting trodden on and I'd rather not buy goods soaked in dog wee.

Dogs have always been allowed in some shops and not in others. Nothing has changed.

Why does mumsnet keep cutting everyone off today?

mycatisannoying · 11/05/2022 14:33

Oh for fuck sake, it's a new dog owner who wants to socialise her pup, but presumably can't put it on the ground as unvaccinated as yet.

OP, I'm in a city, and have in fact seen non-assistance dogs in Primark, Poundland, TK Max, White Stuff, New Look (in Oban!), to name a few. Best to check with the branch direct so you know in advance.
Best of luck with your pup!

mycatisannoying · 11/05/2022 14:34

Oh, John Lewis too. In fact, there's a shopping centre here that is dog-friendly.

SHealy · 11/05/2022 14:34

I have took my wired haired 18 year old dachshund into all shops in a dog pram including, M&S food hall, ALDI, Morrisons, Sainsburys, TESCO and had no issues, in food or other retail outlets, I now use the same pram for my 12 week old puppy,

vivainsomnia · 11/05/2022 14:34

I've been very surprised how many places are dog friendly. Much more than I thought when I got my dog.

She loves going to places like restaurants, post office etc...all I get is comments how cute and well behaved she is. She would never wee or poo inside, she doesn't bark.

The only problem is everyone wanting to say hello and pet her. I've never come accross anyone showing dissatisfaction with her presence.

womaninatightspot · 11/05/2022 14:35

Lots of shops round our way are dog friendly. The post office keeps a jar of dog treats for them behind the counter. Are you not worried darling pup will pee on you though?
