Is Starmer seriously going to resign???

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 09:51

I have been waiting for a thread to come up about this, but I can't see one to date. I can't believe Keir Starmer has now said he will resign (and Angela Rayner as well) Potentially leaving the Labour party with no leader at all!

Looking at the 'evidence' that is well known and has been published, it appears the Indian takeaway was pre ordered (due to its size) and pre planned according to the staff at the Indian and the leaked memo, it did include quite a number of people and bottles of beer etc and drinking. It was late into the night, so not work related, and no one is suggesting anyone continued to work afterwards as it was so late. I don't see how this is any different to the No10 arrangements! So how on earth will they avoid a fine??

Sir Keir's speech was so wobbly I actually thought he was resigning there and then, and although I appreciate the sentiments of integrity and honour, where on earth does that leave the LP with under two years to the election or less?

Who would replace him? Do we have any thoughts on a plan of any kind?

I am kind of aghast, we are in the middle of a European war, on the cusp of potentially WW3, I am not sure this is a responsible action given the seriousness of our predicament with Russia whom are threatening us on a weekly basis with nuclear war. At the very very least, we need a firm hand on the tiller, so to speak, we do not have time to be squabbling over beer and cheese.

I love the fact the same posters that minimise beer and curry were literally frothing at the mouth about cake and cheese at No10.

The hypocrisy clearly extends beyond the political parties.

Which posters, and when exactly were they literally frothing at the mouth? Have you got links? You need to put up or shut up.

And I don't think you know what "literally" means.

Some people are either unaware or don’t comprehend that written words are heard in ones own internal voice. Any frothing, fizzing etc is entirely on the reader. (Although didn’t they change the definition of literal? It was dumbed down because of usage like this. Literally literally doesn’t mean literally anymore Grin).

aside from that I think one of nuances being missed by the BJ fanclub is the difference in reactions of the two leaders. There’s no deflection, dead cats waving, bluster about completely unrelated topics or dodging giving a straight answer. Must be weird if you threw your lot in with BJ and have trained yourself to wear permanent blinkers. A common theme is that they are ‘neutral’ when they’re clearly anything but. Devil’s advocates they ain’t but it allows them to convey some sort of superiority.

VanGoghsDog · 10/05/2022 21:56

I don't think I've ever frothed at the mouth about anything and I'm pretty sure I never commented on the cake party, so I'm not on that imaginary list.

I doubt he will be fined so we will be stuck seeing his smarmy face on the tv 🤮

How is he smarmy Confused just because the Sun says he is doesn't mean he actually is.

Crankley · 10/05/2022 22:11

IMO if Labour hadn't made such a song and dance about Boris Johnson having a drink with the people he worked with every week, this wouldn't be happening now. It was endless, on and on and on until he was fined.

You reap what you sow.

Rainbowpjs · 10/05/2022 22:15

You've massively missed the point there .

WouldBeGood · 10/05/2022 22:16

I agree @Crankley

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 10:47

here is time stamped evidence of work continuing until after 1am

We need a link to that post Ilovesooty and Starmer is able to prove that they all stayed at the venue post 10pm drinks and dinner can he?

This is simply untrue and you know it. Starmer has already confirmed he went straight back to the hotel at 10pm, they have already confirmed those facts that no work continued collectively post beer/Indian.

Starmer sitting in his bed sending emails at 1am can not be used as a defence, because the police will have expected work to continue in the venue with the rest of the group if the defence is going to be a 'work related' break.

I can't even continue to the end of the thread... you are clearly a Tory who cannot grasp the substantial differences between a planned takeaway dinner in the middle of campaigning compared to "Friday drinks" memo and fridges full of wine..

Honestly people with such a lack of common sense should not be allowed to vote...

It wasn’t just Labour, it was many of his own party and the right wing press (who only changed their tune when it became clear he didn’t have the integrity to resign).

And too fucking right people should make a ‘song and dance’ when the Prime Minister has repeatedly broken laws (that he introduced) and repeatedly lied to parliament.

And it was the Tories who did the most to drag the whole affair out - ‘wait for Sue Gray’s report’ sound familiar?

It is amazing the threads full of people that drink on the job, and yet in real life most of us would never work again if we did this! In reality no one does this.
We drink AFTER work perhaps, like Starmer a beer and a bite to eat to celebrate the end of the week maybe.

But working hours, nope!

It is a gross dereliction of duty for most of us - and the same applies to both political parties. The vast majority of voters are looking for sober, intelligent and nuanced leaders capable of running political parties without being three sheets to the wind.

There is literally a subsidised bar at the house of commons, in fact multiple bars I believe

Having a beer with lunch is still quite standard in many team lunches in financial services

This maybe outside your realm of experience, but maybe thats a bit of a narrow set of experiences?

I am interested to know that you are adamant no work emails were sent after a certain time. If you really know that for sure then the russian government should be looking to snap you up pronto

HRTQueen · 10/05/2022 22:47

So Labour and many other MP’s should have ignored that our PM broke the law

sadly we all know that Johnson is a liar and that’s been accepted by many voters that doesn’t mean others should shrug their shoulders and say well that’s Boris he never plays by the rules

what next will be acceptable for Johnson to get away with

Valeriekat · 10/05/2022 22:48

MissyB1 · 10/05/2022 09:57

Ordering take away wasn’t illegal. And I always order in advance as otherwise you can wait hours. That’s no proof that it was “a party”. Unlike sending out invitations to a byob party like the Tories did. There was no garden party for Keir with partners invited - like at number 10. So how is it “the same”?

And to answer your question errrm.. yes he has said he would resign if he received a fine, so he will. And so will Angela Raynor, it’s called having integrity.

Beer makes it a party sorry!

Beer makes it a party sorry!

Wow, there’s me thinking I’m a introvert who has to spend too much time at the office - turns out I go to several parties every week!

Dearmariacountmein · 10/05/2022 23:42

Why would you come to the conclusion that we see you as ‘plebs’ what a ridiculous, and frankly insulting, statement.

I didn’t realise working lots of hours automatically included me as part of some kind of elite. What happens now? Do I pick up a Tory membership card as I pass go?

OrchardBlack · 11/05/2022 00:09

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 10/05/2022 10:03

I don't see how this is any different to the No10 arrangements!
No cake
No interior designer
No DJ
No suitcases full of booze
No drunks in the garden smashing up the kid's swing

Also it was Tier 2 I believe, so more relaxed rules?

The fact the tories are falling over themselves pointing fingers when it is in no way comparable is so transparent to me.

I’m not sure if this was directed at me? I was the one on the receiving end of the snide, ‘plebs’ comment, not the one who made it.

Rainbowpjs · 10/05/2022 15:03

Come on, Lisa Nandy! Perhaps more suited to being a dinner lady.

Wow. And you accuse Starmer of elitism!

What elitist about it? She seems to have the personality of a frying pan. Only one rung up from Keir who could be equated with a wooden spoon.

Dearmariacountmein · 11/05/2022 00:25

@SourPatchAdult I’d clicked reply to the comment from poster who was sarcastic about being a open but my reply function isn’t working.

Well, it was always predictable that the Conservatives would be absolutely desperate to find some mud they could throw, and that the Mail would make it up if they couldn't find it. Unfortunately for them, however, they just can't get their heads around the fact that the relevant law changed and that Starmer didn't break any laws, so the mud doesn't stick.

Luculentus · 11/05/2022 01:07

I am interested to know that you are adamant no work emails were sent after a certain time. If you really know that for sure then the russian government should be looking to snap you up pronto

It's a point which has been queried with OP before, along with various other rather pertinent points. Sadly she sees unable to enlarge or offer any evidence.

Swayingpalmtrees · 11/05/2022 06:30

Having a beer with lunch is still quite standard in many team lunches in financial services

And you work in the financial services do you jaffa?

No, I didn't think so because if you did you would know that you would be immediately sacked for drinking on the trading floor or anywhere else. It is not the 1980s now! You would find yourself in very hot water. Most people in the financial services work upwards of 80 hours a week starting at 6am, many cover the US and Asian markets. There is no room for a break at lunch much less a beer and an Indian drinks party during working hours. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Starmer may try to wriggle out of this with the help of Durham police and his great friend Joy Allen, which will only serve to underscore police incompetence, but as far as most of us are concerned the damage has already done.
Your pitiful excuses for Starmer's pure hypocrisy are embarrassing to read, and he should resign now because the sharks already smell blood in the water and he has now undermined his own authority (and has no chance of winning the election lets face it)

Sir Kier is one of the most excellent legal minds in this country, he's about the rules, he knew what they were doing was within them. Why do you so badly want him to be as bad as Boris? He's already demonstrated far greater morals and integrity. He is not the same.

PainterMummy · 11/05/2022 06:40

given that labour made no real gains in the most recent elections, it would be sensible to try to find a more suitable labour leader in advance of next elections. I don’t really believe his resigning would be about having beer with work mates during lock down. Just using that excuse for some political point scoring.

Piggywaspushed · 11/05/2022 06:53

From your OP OP

we do not have time to be squabbling over beer and cheese

I am not sure this is a responsible action

From your last post:-

and he should resign now

Do make your mind up. 25 pages of beer squabbling and a call for resignation.
