Is Starmer seriously going to resign???

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 09:51

I have been waiting for a thread to come up about this, but I can't see one to date. I can't believe Keir Starmer has now said he will resign (and Angela Rayner as well) Potentially leaving the Labour party with no leader at all!

Looking at the 'evidence' that is well known and has been published, it appears the Indian takeaway was pre ordered (due to its size) and pre planned according to the staff at the Indian and the leaked memo, it did include quite a number of people and bottles of beer etc and drinking. It was late into the night, so not work related, and no one is suggesting anyone continued to work afterwards as it was so late. I don't see how this is any different to the No10 arrangements! So how on earth will they avoid a fine??

Sir Keir's speech was so wobbly I actually thought he was resigning there and then, and although I appreciate the sentiments of integrity and honour, where on earth does that leave the LP with under two years to the election or less?

Who would replace him? Do we have any thoughts on a plan of any kind?

I am kind of aghast, we are in the middle of a European war, on the cusp of potentially WW3, I am not sure this is a responsible action given the seriousness of our predicament with Russia whom are threatening us on a weekly basis with nuclear war. At the very very least, we need a firm hand on the tiller, so to speak, we do not have time to be squabbling over beer and cheese.

I don't know where you are getting your information from OP but your posts are littered with mistakes and spin. On Newsnight last night it was reported a dossier including copies of time stamped emails and WhatsApp's have been handed in proving they carried on working till 1am. No idea why you insist you know they stopped after the food.

I've no idea why you find it impossible to fathom that people could "work past 9pm in a pandemic"? 🤷‍♀️

Also I've no idea why you are calling this a party? They stopped to eat.

Also why are you balking at the amount the curry cost? There were a large group of colleagues to feed! They laid out the food and they went through at various points and got a plate. None of this was illegal!

The footage shows them socially distancing indoors.

Sounds completely normal.

I know you find it so hard to believe that the public find lying, dishonesty and downright hypocrisy exasperating. And worse still when the people in question have been seen to be hogging the high ground for so long.

So, lying, dishonesty and hypocrisy are fine as long as you're consistent at it?

And having integrity and being honest is now considered "hogging the high ground"? Is there not room for more people on that high ground then? If more politicians were honest and straight would some of the current ones fall off the high ground due to over crowding?

And it wasn't a five course meal, it was two. Starter, main with a side. Two courses. Or actually the bhaji could have been another side - so one course: main with two sides.

I might need to move jobs one day, it is a quiet day today and as pp have said there is more fun to be had elsewhere clearly with drinks trolleys at 5pm Hmm None if us drink on the job, we would all be fired and yet Starmer can do it because he has a good friend called Joy and she will cover his backside should anything unsavoury come up.

No one likes to think there are plenty of shady deals within the LP, we all expect better from them, but really they have lied and lied as well (Ange was not there, apparently, but then they suddenly remembered she WAS indeed there, as if anyone could seriously miss that woman at a dinner party) Confused

Are you actually accusing Keir Starmer and Joy Allen of colluding to avoid charges?

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 13:50

Starmer - yes I will resign.

Daily Mail - how dare you.

And still no acknowledgement of Javid's brother holding a senior position with the Met.

They've produced proof that they did indeed continue to work afterwards

Where is the link that proves that????

It's in the Guardian and was reported on Newsnight last night, and subsequently BBC News, paper evidence corroborated by BBC reporter.

You are misinformed OP

The law firms I work in often have people going out for a pint at lunchtime. Have a look at the pubs in the City (London) and see how many insurance brokers etc there are standing outside the pubs. Do you think they all go home after lunch? Of course they don't, they go back to work.

There are even law firms that have a Friday drinks trolley. Alcohol. At. Your. Desk. SHOCKING!!>!>>!>!

The two city pubs I worked in had 1. Insurance brokers and stockbrokers. 2. Journalists and lawyers. The hacks were heroic drinkers back then. I often wondered who actually wrote their lies. I mean reports. Pesky keyboard.

Gingernaut · 10/05/2022 13:52

Even if he resigns, there's a chance he'll be re-elected.

He'll have proved he's a better man than Johnson.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/05/2022 13:52

Interesting choice.

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 13:52

Well that didn't change anything! They couldn't have got more fines if they had tried! Grin

Also I've no idea why you are calling this a party? They stopped to eat.

The beers do complicate this somewhat and there's really no point in denying it. Stopping to eat didn't require that.

What is your issue with Labour OP? If you're a Tory, just say it! Labour voters are not worried because
A) he didn't break the law, and
B) Labour are spoilt for choice of new leaders with Lisa Nandy, Yvette Cooper, Rachel Reeves, Wes Streeting etc. Unlike the Tories who are stuck with Boris.

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 13:39

Going back to Joy Allen and the fact Durham have clearly screwed up the first investigation, and now the public are aware of the second investigation it will be interesting to see what she does for her old pals in the Labour Party.

If that’s your starting point there’s clearly only one conclusion they could reach that you would trust. Therefore there’s no discussion to be had with you really is there?

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 13:54

Eating requires five minutes out of your working day.

Beer swilling in a group is somewhat different....

OP posts:
LemonSwan · 10/05/2022 13:54

Regardless of whether it was a work break or not I do think it was irresponsible and not in the spirit.

This was a time when most work places put in restrictions to meet the 2m rule. Screens between desks, timetables to come in and reduce number in office, max people per kitchen/ break room/ lift etc.

For them to cram that many people into a tiny kitchen is silly. Do I think it should of been illegal - no. I don’t think anything should have been illegal during COVID.

TheKeatingFive · 10/05/2022 13:54

Yvette Cooper

She doesnt want it. Which I think is a great shame.

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 13:37

I work in the City of London, and what you are describing is 15 years out of date at least! In the old days a drink at lunch on Friday was the norm, now we all eat our sandwiches at the desk and are lucky to have a pee stop. I spent all of ten minutes getting some fresh air.

We still go out for beers on Friday night though....not unlike Starmer and his crew to wind down and a late night dinner party. Law firms do NOT have drinks trolleys you have clearly been watching too much Netflix - shock horror - and maybe join the real world!!

You've obviously never worked for an Australian company!

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 13:55

There are still no links whatsoever to produce all of this LP evidence that they were slaving away to 1am....

Noted.

They seem confident that they can prove they were working late into the evening. That should be sufficient, though it is a bit of a gamble. I don't think it being "pre-ordered" is relevant. They planned to work.

I'd have killed for the chance of a takeaway with my colleagues but unfortunately all my 'working late into the evening' was done hunched over a make shift desk in my living room via zoom.

I never agreed with 90% of the rules but to me the whole work thing was just a concession so certain people could get around them.

I'd have broken the rules too if I had the opportunity, but since I never agreed with them or made them I'm not a hypocrite.
