Is Starmer seriously going to resign???

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 09:51

I have been waiting for a thread to come up about this, but I can't see one to date. I can't believe Keir Starmer has now said he will resign (and Angela Rayner as well) Potentially leaving the Labour party with no leader at all!

Looking at the 'evidence' that is well known and has been published, it appears the Indian takeaway was pre ordered (due to its size) and pre planned according to the staff at the Indian and the leaked memo, it did include quite a number of people and bottles of beer etc and drinking. It was late into the night, so not work related, and no one is suggesting anyone continued to work afterwards as it was so late. I don't see how this is any different to the No10 arrangements! So how on earth will they avoid a fine??

Sir Keir's speech was so wobbly I actually thought he was resigning there and then, and although I appreciate the sentiments of integrity and honour, where on earth does that leave the LP with under two years to the election or less?

Who would replace him? Do we have any thoughts on a plan of any kind?

I am kind of aghast, we are in the middle of a European war, on the cusp of potentially WW3, I am not sure this is a responsible action given the seriousness of our predicament with Russia whom are threatening us on a weekly basis with nuclear war. At the very very least, we need a firm hand on the tiller, so to speak, we do not have time to be squabbling over beer and cheese.

And knowing the above are we seriously expecting a free and fair investigation by Durham police?

Whom I might add have already kicked one investigation into the long grass.

How confident can we be?

And to answer your question errrm.. yes he has said he would resign if he received a fine, so he will. And so will Angela Raynor, it’s called having integrity.

@MissyB1 are you always so trusting of politicians' promises? He is a lawyer, they pretty much build their careers around loopholes. He'll wriggle out of it on a technicality ("it's an FPN, not a fine" or something).

Maybe he will, let’s see eh? I’m not going to get wound up on crystal ball predictions.

kirinm · 10/05/2022 13:33

The law firms I work in often have people going out for a pint at lunchtime. Have a look at the pubs in the City (London) and see how many insurance brokers etc there are standing outside the pubs. Do you think they all go home after lunch? Of course they don't, they go back to work.

There are even law firms that have a Friday drinks trolley. Alcohol. At. Your. Desk. SHOCKING!!>!>>!>!

It is amazing the threads full of people that drink on the job, and yet in real life most of us would never work again if we did this! In reality no one does this.
We drink AFTER work perhaps, like Starmer a beer and a bite to eat to celebrate the end of the week maybe.

But working hours, nope!

It is a gross dereliction of duty for most of us - and the same applies to both political parties. The vast majority of voters are looking for sober, intelligent and nuanced leaders capable of running political parties without being three sheets to the wind.

Honestly, you do talk crap.

I have posted about how drinking and returning to work is common in both financial services and construction (I only worked on big projects, so no, the crane drivers were not included in this). It's also common in tech.

Knowing this and having worked at places like this doesn't mean I do it. I don't. I nearly always have to drive anyway, but I don't like day time drinking, it makes me feel odd.

I currently work for the govt and I'm not aware of it happening, but we're still home working as much as we want so I've rarely been in.

kirinm · 10/05/2022 13:35

OP - if he is fined according to your posts, you'll be shocked and think its short term thinking because Europe is(nt) at war. If he isn't fined, it is a police stich up. Are you The Daily Mail because either of the probable outcomes seem unsatisfactory to you.

You simply have no idea of the reality of the very wide spectrum of working lives, particularly where people have to work late. Why do you keep making these ridiculous pronouncements whilst constantly ignoring requests for evidence?

Since when did one lager with a curry make people three sheets to the wind?

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 13:37

I work in the City of London, and what you are describing is 15 years out of date at least! In the old days a drink at lunch on Friday was the norm, now we all eat our sandwiches at the desk and are lucky to have a pee stop. I spent all of ten minutes getting some fresh air.

We still go out for beers on Friday night though....not unlike Starmer and his crew to wind down and a late night dinner party. Law firms do NOT have drinks trolleys you have clearly been watching too much Netflix - shock horror - and maybe join the real world!!

But you started this thread with on the basis that it was inevitable that Durham police would issue a fine and Starmer would have to resign. Why are you now suddenly so confident that the opposite will happen?

HRTQueen · 10/05/2022 13:38

He knows he most probably won’t have to

it is a jibe to Johnson who should have resigned.

Thing is there isn’t anyone lining up (apart from Rayner)

Should he resign the pressure will be back on Johnson but he needs to get on with running the country which is a completely different role to being opposition leader and that’s the line that will be used

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 13:39

Going back to Joy Allen and the fact Durham have clearly screwed up the first investigation, and now the public are aware of the second investigation it will be interesting to see what she does for her old pals in the Labour Party.

hamstersarse · 10/05/2022 13:39

kirinm · 10/05/2022 12:33

@hamstersarse because Durham police investigated and said that he hadn't done anything wrong?? And that they're only investigating because a Tory MP asked them to along with a heavy campaign against Starmer by the Daily Mail.

But he did LIE. That was the whole basis of his attack against Boris, and yet here he was lying.

He lied about there not being food in the hotel he was staying at, who was there, that it was organised upfront, and it remains to be seen whether he is lying about continuing to work afterwards

I don't know if there is a way to justify his response to Boris given how he has also lied. It's embarrassing.

You now all about the workings of law firms in the City of London yet you are convinced that no-one works after 10 pm? Colour me just a tad sceptical.

Notonthestairs · 10/05/2022 13:40

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Bad Javid is Sajid's brother - he's second highest ranking officer in the department that initially rejected the suggestion of investigating Partygate.
I still assume - and have to trust - that they are capable of doing their jobs.

1 beer doesn't render anyone three sheets to the wind.

Wrong again OP. Where I work, they roll out the Drinks Trolley every Friday at 3pm. We grab a beer, glass of wine and head back to our desks till around 6. Every week!

And those nights we work late? Yep, beer and food and back to it.

You should try and work somewhere more fun!

You have spent all morning posting on MN though…

pointythings · 10/05/2022 13:40

OP, there are people on here describing the things you say no longer happen as being part of their current working lives. So you are clearly wrong.

Your style of description is also very Daily Mail - in the Mail, no-one eats. They guzzle, or they chow down. It's all very drama llama.

Bottom line: you are incapable of knowing everything about everyone's working lives, and you clearly do not know anything about purdah, late night political campaigning or the effect of a drink with a meal on the human body.

But do keep posting, you're still hilarious.

Cornettoninja · 10/05/2022 13:42

Thanks @Swayingpalmtrees I didn’t know that re: Joy Allen. I’m not entirely sure how relevant it is given the Downing Street parties were investigated by a commissioner closely entangled with the tories.

ultimately, either we trust the police and the outcome or we don’t. If we don’t then what do we trust or how do we resolve a case like this?

the seeds of doubt are very cleverly being sowed, but they don’t offer any sort of definitive resolution and that’s damaging.

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 13:43

I have no doubt that Starmer SHOULD be fined, but now looking at all of his friends in the police force, I think there may be some fiddling behind the scenes.

It would make sense as to why he offered his resignation so far in advance, and with no real reason to do so - it would stand to reason that he has it all sown up behind the scenes no?

OR

He wants to leave the job knowing he can't win an election - and spare Durham Police the embarrassment of another failed investigation.

TheKeatingFive · 10/05/2022 13:44

When I worked in London in consultancy we had a Friday drinks trolley. Those were the days.😆

But the most you'd do is have a beer while finishing up your time sheets. It didn't appear until 4.45.

I'm not sure if the company would still have it, that was ten years ago. My current workplace might dole out a half a glass of fizz to celebrate a big win, but that's happened twice in five years.

Squillerman · 10/05/2022 13:45

I doubt they will be fined and therefore won’t resign. They didn’t have a party like No 10, they had food and a beer whilst working. They weren’t having a birthday ot Christmas party like the government.

If she'd not done that perhaps she wouldn't have had to indulge in competitive working through your lunch break - itis.

Saying he’ll resign is a political move

He may well not be fined still

noblegiraffe · 10/05/2022 13:47

So why has Angela Rayner also offered hers?

Perhaps the actual explanation is the one offered, that it’s a matter of principle rather than contortions of dodgy deals with corrupt police.
