Is Starmer seriously going to resign???

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 09:51

I have been waiting for a thread to come up about this, but I can't see one to date. I can't believe Keir Starmer has now said he will resign (and Angela Rayner as well) Potentially leaving the Labour party with no leader at all!

Looking at the 'evidence' that is well known and has been published, it appears the Indian takeaway was pre ordered (due to its size) and pre planned according to the staff at the Indian and the leaked memo, it did include quite a number of people and bottles of beer etc and drinking. It was late into the night, so not work related, and no one is suggesting anyone continued to work afterwards as it was so late. I don't see how this is any different to the No10 arrangements! So how on earth will they avoid a fine??

Sir Keir's speech was so wobbly I actually thought he was resigning there and then, and although I appreciate the sentiments of integrity and honour, where on earth does that leave the LP with under two years to the election or less?

Who would replace him? Do we have any thoughts on a plan of any kind?

I am kind of aghast, we are in the middle of a European war, on the cusp of potentially WW3, I am not sure this is a responsible action given the seriousness of our predicament with Russia whom are threatening us on a weekly basis with nuclear war. At the very very least, we need a firm hand on the tiller, so to speak, we do not have time to be squabbling over beer and cheese.

Do you think Johnson should have resigned, OP?

Yes absolutely.

Can you point us to the thread where you posted with an equivalent degree of indignation your rage at the fact that he hasn't?

etulosba · 10/05/2022 12:38

It was late into the night, so not work related,

Why on Earth not? I have on occasion worked into the early hours and ordered food in for the whole team.

stuntbubbles · 10/05/2022 12:38

Bagsy scruffybumblers for my next name change

ilovesooty · 10/05/2022 12:38

scruffy bumblers

I think Johnson surpasses all competition there.

thecatfromjapan · 10/05/2022 12:39

Can we talk about BinBag Johnson?

Where's he going to lead us in the cost of living crisis?

How's he going to manage the continued Brexit fall-out?

How do the 2019 intake feel about the local elections bloodbath?

Why is there a black hole of talent in the current Conservative Party when it comes to replacing him?

Are Tufton Street going to get their dream and replace him with Steve Baker or will he be kept in place, desperately, by a faction keen to avoid that?

How soon is it until the next General Election?

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 12:40

I am not sure who you think I am, but I promise you are likely to be disappointed if it is someone interesting!! Grin
I have nothing to hide, and I have been swaying for a long time now!

I know you find it so hard to believe that the public find lying, dishonesty and downright hypocrisy exasperating. And worse still when the people in question have been seen to be hogging the high ground for so long.

Perhaps knowing you were swilling beer and chowing Indian with your friends yourself, you would Starmer would have piped down a little, but no! He was out of the traps demanding resignations before the investigations even took place.

Own goal jumps to my mind.

Anyway for me a salad and a diet coke is coming up and not the five course Indian platter some seem to enjoy. I might even stretch to a cereal bar

As a name hanger she can't, even if such posts from her exist.

LillyDeValley · 10/05/2022 12:40

It feels like he's going big (and may have to go home). Yes Labour made council gains in London, but given everything they would have been expecting/hoping to make sizeable gains, which they didn't. The indications are if they went to the polls today, they wouldn't win. You get the sense others are circling for the leadership and so he has to do something bold to stay in.

I've always said Starmer is like Kinnock. He will steady the ship, get Labour back on course for the next Labour PM. My money is on Andy Burnham venturing back into being an MP and then going for the top job.

Luculentus · 10/05/2022 12:41

Are you serious Wes Streeting?
He is much too young for the job in my view and does not have anywhere near the authority or experience to run for Prime Minister.

He'll be 41 by the time the next election is due. Hardly a spring chicken.

But it doesn't arise as Starmer will still be in office.

newnamethanks · 10/05/2022 12:42

Send for young Delingpole, scion of the delightful Spectator contributor James, to spy on Wes Streeting through his windows. Don't forget your camera, young Ivo, you do your family credit.

noblegiraffe · 10/05/2022 12:43

The indications are if they went to the polls today, they wouldn't win.

The indications are that they would need to form a coalition government (which, given the Tories have led the way on that in the last decade isn’t a great issue) not that the Tories would win.

DorritLittle · 10/05/2022 12:44

Having looked at the venue photos, I am finding the idea of a wild Labour party in the Miners Hall with a takeaway and a beer quite amusing.

Wonder if Sir Keir did the macarena?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/05/2022 12:44

And Johnson did? A couple of terms of jingoistic flag waving as London mayor and a catastrophic bash at being Foreign Secretary?

Luculentus · 10/05/2022 12:45

Perhaps knowing you were swilling beer and chowing Indian with your friends yourself, you would Starmer would have piped down a little, but no! He was out of the traps demanding resignations before the investigations even took place.

That was at the point when even Johnson wasn't denying that the relevant gatherings had taken place, he was just trying to say that he was too stupid to realise that they were against the laws that his government put in place. Obviously resignation was and remains appropriate.

The fact that Starmer and his colleagues had a lawful work-related meal together a long time later when the law had changed is utterly irrelevant.

It feels very fake, guarded and lacking in any depth or real meaning. Scripted words muffled out in the most painful way.

Are we talking about Boris now ?

Slinkymalinky03 · 10/05/2022 12:52

Yes Labour made council gains in London, but given everything they would have been expecting/hoping to make sizeable gains, which they didn't

This is an interesting view. I read an article which suggested a shift over a number of years towards Labour support in major cities and towards Tory support in what were traditionally considered Labour red wall smaller towns. In the case of London, people in their twenties were most likely to be moving into the city whilst people in their mid thirties and forties were most likely to be moving out to smaller towns. Based on this trend, Labour wouldn't have expected sizable gains outside of London and other major cities whilst the Tories could have anticipated losing seats in these areas.

sst1234 · 10/05/2022 12:53

That’s terrible publicity for the restaurant concerned. The food looks horrible. Off topic, I know but I hope they asked for refund if this is what they were served - a flourescent curry, bland rice that look like they’re a day old and what I can only assume is an attempt at a pakora

Slinkymalinky03 · 10/05/2022 12:55

Andy Burnham venturing back into being an MP and then going for the top job.

Andy Burnham is one of the most unlikeable, self obsessed and untrustworthy individuals one could ever meet. It will be a very sad day for the Labour party if this man is ever made leader.

noblegiraffe · 10/05/2022 12:16

Starmer, unlike Johnson, has promoted talented people around him.

Johnson has a habit of filling his cabinet with total incompetents because they take some of the heat off him and clearly pose no threat.

The Tories look behind Johnson and see the likes of Raab, Patel, Truss and think ‘fuck, shit as he is, we can’t get rid’.

Labour, on the other hand, have a reasonable selection waiting in the wings.

Your first statement is hilarious. He dredged up the unemployables from the pits of left wing depths (many the same as Corby’s shadow cabinet) and plonked them on the front bench to provide entertainment to the Tory majority.

SleeplessInEngland · 10/05/2022 12:57

"Andy Burnham is one of the most unlikeable, self obsessed and untrustworthy individuals one could ever meet."

Perfect PM material then, going by the current one.

Comefromaway · 10/05/2022 12:58

"Perhaps knowing you were swilling beer and chowing Indian with your friends yourself, you would Starmer would have piped down a little, but no!"

None of which was against the law at the time as it was not friends but work colleagues who had been engaged in working away from home until late.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 10/05/2022 13:01

Didn't the Met say they wouldn't disclose any further fines being issued to those in government whilst the local elections were going on or did I imagine hearing that on the radio ?

noblegiraffe · 10/05/2022 13:01

Your first statement is hilarious.

And yet you can’t bring yourself to even post disagreement with my second statement that Johnson’s cabinet is stuffed with terrible people picked for their incompetence.

Who is your favourite to replace Johnson?

Jaxhog · 10/05/2022 13:09

I think Starmer is hoping this will put pressure on the police NOT to fine him.
