Is Starmer seriously going to resign???

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 09:51

I have been waiting for a thread to come up about this, but I can't see one to date. I can't believe Keir Starmer has now said he will resign (and Angela Rayner as well) Potentially leaving the Labour party with no leader at all!

Looking at the 'evidence' that is well known and has been published, it appears the Indian takeaway was pre ordered (due to its size) and pre planned according to the staff at the Indian and the leaked memo, it did include quite a number of people and bottles of beer etc and drinking. It was late into the night, so not work related, and no one is suggesting anyone continued to work afterwards as it was so late. I don't see how this is any different to the No10 arrangements! So how on earth will they avoid a fine??

Sir Keir's speech was so wobbly I actually thought he was resigning there and then, and although I appreciate the sentiments of integrity and honour, where on earth does that leave the LP with under two years to the election or less?

Who would replace him? Do we have any thoughts on a plan of any kind?

I am kind of aghast, we are in the middle of a European war, on the cusp of potentially WW3, I am not sure this is a responsible action given the seriousness of our predicament with Russia whom are threatening us on a weekly basis with nuclear war. At the very very least, we need a firm hand on the tiller, so to speak, we do not have time to be squabbling over beer and cheese.

Most orders have to be pre ordered , especially if it's for a lot of people.
I'm sure that someone must have planned the logistics of it all. It's not the same as ordering for one or two people at home on a whim. takeaways need a bit of time to prep etc.

pointythings · 10/05/2022 11:48

Oh OP.

If wishes were horses you would need the biggest stable on earth.

Say hi to the folks at Tory HQ for me and keep posting, you're hilarious.

noblegiraffe · 10/05/2022 11:49

“Keir Starmer eats big dinners.”

Did that play well with the focus groups?

I’m also enjoying the suggestion that he has said he will resign, not because he is taking a principled stand, but because he is bored of being Leader of the Opposition.

No wonder we have an obesity crisis - who on earth would eat all of that in one sitting!!

Several people in this thread have told you they would. I would (and have done). I'm not obese. I'm probably about six pounds over my ideal BMI.

You're basically just calling everyone liars so you ought to stop that.

Starter, main and side is a perfectly normal meal. I'm stunned there's no pudding, frankly!

Notonthestairs · 10/05/2022 11:51

Labour have complied film editing clips, WhatsApp messages and documents that are time stamped that show them working until after 1am.

Why would you find politicians working late around the time of an election surprising? I imagine they all work late hours at some point.

I, like many others, think an Indian dinner complete with beers at 10pm is a party, a dinner party! It is horseshit to say otherwise.

You can bleat that he deserves food at the end of his 'shift' that is what room service is for! He deserves a beer - even though it is illegal in most places of work - fine that is what a mini bar is for! They all needed a break - fine - the hotel was five minutes away.

There was no need to host an Indian dinner party with beer at all.

That is what it boils down to.....

You have low standards for a party if you think an Indian takeaway for 15 people at around £12 a head constitutes one.

There didn't have to be a "need". It only had to be reasonably necessary for election preparation purposes. Everyone needs a break from work, everyone needs food and drink. They can show they carried on working afterwards, and indeed it's highly likely they carried on working during the break in terms of talking about campaign tactics.

Out of interest, what is the difference between "order" and "pre order"?

An order would be when you ring up and order your food they cook it and deliver it as soon as they can. Except that back then most popular takeaways had a 2-3 hour wait for food.

So doing a pre-order means you ordered the food at say lunchtime that day and asked for it to be delivered at 10pm

Luculentus · 10/05/2022 11:55

BigWoollyJumpers · 10/05/2022 11:21

can tell the difference between a working dinner and full-on party

But you are comparing apples and pears. Johnson has been fined for a midday piece of cake. That was not, in my humber opinion, a full-on party. The Met have found otherwise, OK, in which case, Durham police should follow the same protocol. If not, why not.

The Met police haven't found that the birthday event was a full-on party. That isn't an essential element of the offence.

Frazzled2207 · 10/05/2022 11:55

I think it was a smart move and Keir could have the last laugh here
if he does get a fine he will have to resign so he may as well put his cards on the table
now

fairly sure Tories now regret putting so much pressure on Durham police.

but as PP said if he is found to have broken the rules but not fined that is an interesting situation.

however the whole situation is totally ridiculous. Surely Durham police have better things to do and I’m pretty sure no other police force (other than the
met of course) is spending precious resources investigating a work event that happened over a year ago where the apparent crime was having a beer

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 11:28

Who on earth is going to eat all of that hos 😮 No one is going to order all of that food for ONE person!!!! At least try and look like you are working within the normal range of consumption when you are bending the maths to suit!

Now you just look like a twat, it’s a pretty average order from a takeaway.

Luculentus · 10/05/2022 11:58

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 11:26

The biggest losers here are not going to be Starmer or Johnson, if they are not very very careful it will be the police.

Their reputation is already taking a huge hit with the rape charges, and murder. If they are also seen to be delivering justice in a politically motivated way then we can rightly assume that they are not fit for purpose.

The stakes could not be higher.

They tried to bury the first investigation, and now this one has much more media attention despite the BBC doing their level best to ignore and minimise it.

I am a swing voter for the record. I vote for the best option for the country and could not care less about political colours. I will not stand for hypocrisy.

OP, you've been asked repeatedly to quote your evidence for believing this broke the law, you've been asked repeatedly to give references for the interpretation of the law you are so confidently citing, and you haven't managed to respond to any of those requests.

Suddenly you have swung into a pre-emptive attack on the police. Could it be that you have belatedly realised (or received instructions) that actually Starmer didn't break the law and isn't going to be fined, and therefore all your posts are a nonsense?

thecatfromjapan · 10/05/2022 11:58

HerculesMulligan · 10/05/2022 10:50

Is OP from CCHQ? The tone of the posts is very weird.

Bet it's Tufton Street.

(Key difference: they want KS and BJ gone.)

pointythings · 10/05/2022 11:59

That amount of food is really only an issue if you eat like that every day. Most people have blowouts every now and then - I mean, look at th average amount of calories consumed by British people on Christmas Day! Of course OP would only eat a quarter of a mince pie, a sliver of turkey and a teaspoonful of sherry.

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 12:00

How does that mean he will have the last laugh? He won't have a job or be the leader any longer. How do you expect the LP to win an election with a brand new leader that no one knows? Unless you plan to exhume Blair from this gold digging enterprises? Or David Miliband finally gets his place in the sun and jets back from NY? Seriously how will Labour benefit from Keir's cards being on the table and he is out of the picture?

Actually, it's a pretty standard order. Even if you limit the order to curry and rice - which I assume even you would concede is normal - it's still well over £10 a head. And that's not taking drinks into account.

kirinm · 10/05/2022 12:01

What rape charges and murder are Starmer and Johnson concerned with?

ilovesooty · 10/05/2022 12:03

Swayingpalmtrees · 10/05/2022 11:15

I think Starmer would have been wise to wait until the second police investigation has been concluded before making a decision and a statement.

Now most of us are simply waiting for him to go, and worried about the next leader and who it might be.

No. "Most of us" I suspect are a bit brighter than that.

Xenia · 10/05/2022 12:03

The state confused laws and guidance throughout the pandemic as many an MN thread made clear. I was against all the lock down laws from March 2020. However I did follow them and I hope everyone else did - only one of whom I have direct knowledge where I am who did not was the NHS doctor a few doors up who had people over definitely for social events !!! I did not rat him out.

As to what the exact regulations said at the time Stamer and BJ had their various food at work things goodness only knows as the rules changed so often. I am surprised anyone has alcohol at any work events whether they are Labour or Tory however.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/05/2022 12:03

I'd put money on OP being a long standing MNer tbh rather than a bot. They do this sort of thing.

Xenia · 10/05/2022 12:04

..by which I mean work events where you will be working before and after (obviously you can have alcohol at parties at work in normal times) . If you are going to be sending out work emails etc until 1am after why would you be drinking beer?

He would have the last laugh because it would show up Johnson and the Conservative Party badly and his actions would give the Labour Party the moral high ground.

SaintJavelin · 10/05/2022 12:05

OP are you Sophie Corcoran?

Fairisleflora · 10/05/2022 12:06

Or is OP Carrie Johnson?

pointythings · 10/05/2022 12:07

OP, unless you're an insider and you know a snap GE is going to be called soon, you should be aware that the next GE won't be until late 2024. Plenty of time for a leader to no longer be 'brand new'.

But do go on, I love the smell of Tory panic.
