Holiday home bill on Prime :(

More of a wwyd?

I went to a holiday home in the uk around a month ago and while we were there we logged into our own Netflix and Prime onto the tv as this was available. I logged out of Netflix but didn’t the prime it seems as today I’ve had a credit card bill for 340.00. My CC is attached to my prime account.

It lists a lot of prime video, and on logging in I can see that a lot of films have been bought, some to permanently keep in HD (15.99) a piece. All are charges from 1 week, so I’m guessing when a family were staying there?

the thing is what to do next? DFriend says that I should phone the credit card company and deny the charges? But it’s from my account!

DM thinks that I should call the bloody police as it’s theft

and I’m just at a loss, I’m aware that I left it logged in so I’m not sure if I’d even be able to put blame. I’ve messaged the holiday home owner and I’ve logged myself out of all devices

but wwyd?

also name change because I’m mortified

I should add he's 5 (maybe 4 at the time) and didn't know what he was doing.

Fishwishy · 10/05/2022 10:57

Change password for prime and Netflix. And disassociate the devices with your account. Then chalk it up to experience. It's not Amazon or the holiday let's fault here.

LindaEllen · 10/05/2022 10:57

In addition to my post though, subscription services should ask how long you want to stay logged in for when you originally log in. So if it is on a device you own at home, you could select indefinitely, and if you're at a friend's house, or on holiday etc you can input the date you want to be signed out on. This would save this from happening (even though I still think it didn't).

Leave the people a bad review
Hope karma comes for them
And then try to see if you can get your money back and make sure to install a pin code

Really staggered by this. It's not the holiday let's fault. The sole issue is with the op. I personally think the public get too much protection from banks and companies like this which the rest of us end up paying for with higher costs. People need to be responsible for their own security or simply not have access to these accounts and services.

IsabelHerna · 10/05/2022 11:37

Call your bank, police (the online crime division), contact amazon, and get in touch with the Airbnb owner? You can prove that this was done on purpose, they bought the movies and not rented them.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 10/05/2022 11:45

Perhaps providers such as Netflix, Prime and Disney+ need to consider extra security measures if the log-in is from an unknown address? So that users have to jump through a couple of hoops to prove they have the right to be accessing and buying content?

You can set that up. Either OP has chosen not to bother or she didn't check her emails or notifications for several days.

None of that us Amazons fault.

Why on earth would you do this? It's got nothing to do with the holiday house owner? (totally bizarre.......)

Op knowingly logged herself in so those notifications wouldn’t help. The issue is OP didn’t log out. Amazon does make it very easy for accidental purchases with one click purchase which is on as standard for digital purchases. I’ve been caught out by DS when he was young and I’d followed all of the guides to turn off purchasing but there is/was more than one place you had to turn it off. Amazon refunded and explained the setting I had missed.

Apple on the other hand you have to turn it off and normally only works within 15 minutes of another purchase where a password has been entered or other verification.

You know you're not allowed to troll hunt on here, right?

But that aside 1 - not everyone checks every email address they have, it could well have gone to one they don't use. 2 - where does it say she has the address? and 3 - how do you know that the OP watched anything on Prime before getting the bill?

You need to improve your troll hunting skills, none of your points hold any water

I know she left herself logged in, but both Amazon and Apple email you with a purchase is made with strict instructions to email or get in touch if the purchase was an error - I'm not sure why she didn't do that but it's very foolish of her not to.

You can also set your bank account up to text you whenever a transaction occurs - at the very least you should be checking your accounts regularly- it seems she didn't do that either.

I suspect Amazon will refund her but there are lots of steps she should have had in place which would have alerted her much quicker.

Bunpea · 10/05/2022 18:19

It’s not the holiday home owner’s responsibility.

And I doubt they could legally give you the contact details of whoever the guest was after you, even if they wanted to.

This is tough, and infuriating.

i hope Amazon will agree to waive the charges.

I’d contact the holiday home owner and explain what’s happened, offer them the proof, and ask if they’d like to be named on the small claims court claim or if they’d like to nominate someone else.

The CF knew exactly what they were doing, and that someone was paying for it. Then I’d issue a small claims court for the whole amount.

This

3luckystars · 10/05/2022 18:26

I think she forgot about us too!!

Vanderama · 10/05/2022 18:26

Is it definitely charges from the holiday home or could someone else on your household have downloaded the movies on another tv or tablet?

Momicrone · 10/05/2022 18:29

If it was my holiday home, I would tell them what their (pesky) little kid had done, and see if I could help sort it out for the account holder

Bunpea · 10/05/2022 18:35

Don’t unfairly leave a bad review.

It’s wrong, and might come back to bite you. E.g. Owners who let via AirBnB often check out potential guests, and some letting agencies avoid letting again to a guest if there’s been a problem like an unfair review.

ladyvimes · 10/05/2022 18:41

Surely this is fraud. Is it not similar to if your found a debit card on the floor and used it for tap and pay purchases? For that amount of money I would get the police involved to be honest.

Neverreturntoathread · 09/05/2022 18:13

This is good advice.

It's terrible advice. The holiday home owner wasn't the one who bought a load of films at someone else's expense, so why would you phrase it like that?

Perhaps it would be more reasonable to contact the owner to explain the situation. It is just possible that the next guests genuinely thought it came as part of the holiday cottage, and they might actually be willing to pay up if asked politely.

cookiemonster2468 · 10/05/2022 18:54

Check the dates purchased. Contact the holiday home owner, explain the situation and find out who was there during those dates.

Tell the holiday home owner in future they need to double check accounts are logged out in between guests.

PUGMEISTER21 · 10/05/2022 18:55

340 a week at those prices is only 3 films a day to watch. Easy to achieve.

cookiemonster2468 · 10/05/2022 18:57

I disagree with this. If the owners provide Smart TV then they should check in between guests that people have logged out, as part of the process of preparing the place for the next guest.

They wouldn't have legal responsibility probably, but it would be a courteous thing for them to do.

They probably haven't thought of it which is why OP should explain this situation to them to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Who ever stayed there that week are cheeky fuckers, they knew someone would be paying for that, even if they assumed it was the owner, it's still out of order. I'd contact the owner and ask them to get I'm touch with the CFs and ask them how they plan to pay for it.

If you ask Amazon nicely they will probably refund, they are generally very good but I'd definitely want to worry the people who stole from you so they think twice before taking advantage again

Totally agree
They knew what they were doing & should've held responsible.
As ppl say, explain your story as you're genuine.
Then make sure those who took advantage, realize it's not right to sccrew others whenever the opportunity arises !!
It'll spare their next victim also !
There's a lot of cheeky fckers who take liberties & at others expense.
Do a good turn & 'stop a cheeky fcker today '...

sorrow4ever · 10/05/2022 19:14

If they bought a physical item should have their address and not yours? Maybe this way you can prove it the items weren’t purchase by you. Good luck

Raizin · 10/05/2022 19:16

Amazon will refund you. My brother, who's autistic, had a field day buying loads of films on my account and they refunded the lot, no questions asked.

Mxr · 10/05/2022 19:19

Further to my earlier reply

There is always a remote chance the owners did it !
Unlikely, but I would let Amazon handle it for that reason alone.
If that happened, Amazon would not allow them to use their platform.

It's unlikely, but...!
