To think Prince William preaching about climate change is another example the monarchy should not exist

Is he having a laugh? His wife and him parade around in designer clothes costing thousands of pounds, live on multiple properties, fly around the world often in jets and he is telling US to do our bit?

I had a chat with DH earlier and we thought it would be a good idea for the queen to hand straight to William but now I'm not sure either and just wish the lot of them would go away and cease to exist as a royal family.

They're taking the piss - when will we no longer stand for a monarchy?

As soon as someone mentions the 'P'-word, I doubt their sincerity. What exactly is wrong with being told about or encouraged to engage with an issue like the changing climate and the prevention or mitigation thereof? Scientists have been plugging away for half a century, publishing increasingly disturbing research and trying to raise awareness both with the public, corporations and policy makers to little avail. They have been threatened, defunded, cynically and wilfully ignored, ridiculed, discredited and strategically undermined. Ditto environmental campaigners, anywhere on the spectrum between Prince Charles to Greta Thunberg to the activists of XR or Insulate Britain; only they also have to run the frankly ridiculous gauntlet of 'purity verification'. They've got a mobile / travel by car / drink coffee? Well, there you are, they should stop bloody preaching to the rest of us.
This is the single most effective way of turning what could be a brilliant call to arms, a welcome reminder to engage and to educate ourselves, an inspiration to organise and demand change and action from corporations and politicians, into a limp, pathetic diversion from what is really important.

SickAndTiredAgain · 09/05/2022 06:32

If there was ever a referendum on whether to keep the RF or not, I'd vote to abolish it. But I can't get too worked up about someone talking about climate change. Loads of people who talk about climate change aren't living the greenest of lives, and I don't like how that is often used as an excuse to ignore the issue.

RoseWindow · 09/05/2022 06:33

There are some very strange posts on this thread. One of the least environmentally friendly things that any of us can do is have kids, yet here we all are, on a parenting website. So as parents we need to be doing everything we can to support the planet for the future for our kids (and for everyone else’s kids, if we are not parents ourselves). Small changes across the whole population could help and will be more impactful than a few celebrities like Prince William making changes (although obviously celebs should be doing that too)

As for the posters going on about obscene wealth and other people not living like real people. Presumably you avoid reading every single other celebrity or richer person than yourself because you object to the wealth disparity? Us the public, following and commenting on any celebrity’s lives in the media and social media, all contribute strongly to the personal security issues and wealth disparities which are further inflated because of the further media coverage generated in our celebrity culture. It’s a cycle.

But it sounds like the posters on here make sure they watch absolutely none of those programmes and they read no celeb newspaper reports or websites, on principle. So it will be perfectly safe for celebs to get out and about on a bike in furure? Hmm

the80sweregreat · 09/05/2022 06:37

Why do people always say I wouldn't want a ' president Blair ' in posts about the Royals ? It's always him.
There have been a number of PMs since he left!
At least presidents / PMs are elected.

Do be quiet in the corner.
Go and live in a country with a prrseident, or even better, a dictator, then post your incisive and profound thoughts

RoseWindow · 09/05/2022 06:42

As imperfect as it might be, the democracy with the figurehead monarchy is the system we have at the moment. So what should the RF do with their lives? Try to raise awareness of the importance of making urgent climate changes that everyone should be doing?
Or just enjoy their wealth in silence?

Given the disgusting behaviour of Boris Johnson and his peers over covid restrictions I actually appreciate how the Queen stands for integrity and values. In great contrast to the rotten entitled politics at the top of party politics at the moment. We have police fines being issued for the first time in history, to a serving prime minister who refuses to resign. You couldn’t make it up.

The structural changes to how we live are needed VERY urgently to save our lives against climate change so we don’t have any choice any longer. We just had elections in lots of parts of the UK. I didn’t notice climate change being raised as a big issue because of all the fuck ups that governments have made around the frightening cost of living and Brexit issues and whatever else. We all have other very urgent things to think about.

But if we all do nothing differently in our personal lives and we rely on governments to deliver structural changes in time to mitigate the worst effects of climate change, the world won’t be here any more for us or our kids. So it’s better that Prince William with the time and energy and platform to raise these issues, raises them now. More celebs should do it and he should keep at it.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/05/2022 06:44

He has three children. That alone makes him an example of the biggest threat to the climate. Well off people with large families, large homes etc.

Flying and them 'recycling' their clothes by wearing them more than once, like normal people is a drop in the ocean compared with the environmental cost of having children.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 08/05/2022 22:47

Yanbu. The tonedeaf Caribbean holiday shows just how clueless and out of touch they are. They need to go.

The fact that you think it was a holiday shows how clueless you are. It was a working tour on which they represented the UK.

Plasticpenelope · 09/05/2022 06:50

Ratrick · 08/05/2022 21:58

Preaching about climate change is about the only worthwhile thing anyone in that family has ever done.

I’d love to see the back of all of them, but possible hypocrisy on climate change is a non-issue to me.

The issue of climate change is far, far more important than that of the Royal Family. Their message about climate change is far, far more important than any hypocrisy.

YABVVU.

It's so shallow to have a pop at the Royal Family rather than tackle the actual real issue of whether the world will exist in fifty or a hundred years time.

Plasticpenelope · 09/05/2022 06:51

Sorry Ratrick, I meant to say I agree with you!

FrippEnos · 09/05/2022 06:55

There are lots of people that are hypocritical about climate change from celebs, XR and isolate Britain to those that claim to care but go on two or three flights per year in holiday.

The RF are just doing the same.

Giraffesandbottoms · 09/05/2022 06:58

You must be joking, there have been endless threads criticising Harry and Meghan!

90% of those threads are people being outraged that anyone has dared criticise them/calling racism because there can’t be any other reason for disliking them. And then they are deleted.

people commenting on 3 children as if 2 is better are idiots.

Horst · 09/05/2022 07:00

Take away the royal part and it’s just rich family talks about climate change while living their rich like flying the world with their three children.

I highly doubt they are alone in that factor. How many rich people will of been somewhere hot and sunny then flown off for skiing many will. How many on mn do the very same remember the holiday threads.

really it’s just another we went the royal family gown thread at heart. Which ok that’s your view but it’s not like William is alone in saying one thing while living a life of money. Just his face ends up in the paper.

mynamesnotMa · 09/05/2022 07:00

Gosh yes. We are a laughing stock still paying for these parasites. Anyone that pops up telling me how much money they generate can feck off now

RoseWindow · 09/05/2022 07:09

The ‘President Blair’ stuff is so wierd and irrelevant that I had assumed it’s bots or paid posters who do seem to hang about on here.

CounsellorTroi · 09/05/2022 07:28

I think there should be a referendum, maybe every ten years or so. Why the heck is anyone a monarch by divine right these days rather than the consent of the people?Even if they never actually lose the results could inform as to how popular they really are and whether they need to change.

LakieLady · 09/05/2022 07:33

Ratrick · 09/05/2022 02:50

And of course, those arguments also overlook the fact that, so long as we have a monarchy, we could end up stuck with a Prince Andrew type (or worse) as head of state.

If Charles had died before he had children, Andrew would be the heir to the throne, and there would be absolutely nothing we could do about it.

THisbackwithavengeance · 09/05/2022 07:55

So basically according to MN, no-one is allowed to talk about climate change unless you live off the grid and have only 1 child? I'm going on my third flight this year soon, have 3 DCs, drive a large car and still have my heating on in the evenings....

It's fair enough to say you don't like William or the Monarchy because you resent or are jealous of his privilege and wealth but to accuse him of hypocrisy because he doesn't think global warming is a good thing is ridiculous.

To be fair to William, he probably doesn't give a fuck about climate change but it is one of his safe apolitical global topics that he is allowed to talk about by his speech writers/advisors.

newnamethanks · 09/05/2022 08:04

We pay a lot of money to keep the whole tottering enterprise going so the very least we can expect from the irony-free zone in which the royals appear to exist is that they give you something to laugh at fairly often. Which they can be relied upon to do.

Blossomtoes · 09/05/2022 08:05

We don’t pay that much for them. In the great scheme of wasted taxpayers’ money it’s peanuts.

josil · 09/05/2022 08:13

youvegottenminuteslynn · 08/05/2022 23:41

I think they should change their unofficial motto from "Never Complain, Never Explain" to "Stop bloody preaching and stop bloody leeching".

Outdated and hypocritical. When you take a step back and really think about the concept of a Royal Family given so much privilege due to happening to be born into a lineage, it's absolutely ridiculous.

Your unofficial motto is brilliant 😭

What exactly did William say? I have just googled and it seems his Earthshot prize, which encourages entrepreneurs to find technological solutions to climate change, won a BAFTA.

It is only a quick pre- school run google but I am confused? I don't really see the problem.

LightEveningsAreBack · 09/05/2022 08:50

It does make me laugh them all preaching to the peasants about climate change. We haven't been abroad since 2019, even when we do go we travel by ferry. I wonder how many air miles these plebs have racked up since 2019, a fair few I'd guess. I honestly don't get the point in any of them, it's just so outdated and odd to worship people that are literally just born into a family. I find it utterly bizarre when people say "I love them" and "they work so hard and do so much for us" 🤣, what what exactly do they do apart from jet about in designer clothing shaking hands, jetting back to their Palace. I think we need a referendum, let the people decide.

Zilla1 · 09/05/2022 08:54

'We don't pay that much for them' - they pay us in Service. And they earn their keep. Tourism would clearly stop if there was no RF. Ask a tourist in London watching the trooping the colour and the only reason tourists visit the UK is because of the RF. Someone would probably be able to produce an analysis of sorts that shows the RF make a positive contribution. It may even be that this year's publicity in the US with the DoY and Prince Harry has just increased brand awareness. If so, the government should buy a chalet in Verbier in compensation or at least pay any outstanding payments to the previous owner.

TheKeatingFive · 09/05/2022 08:55

So basically according to MN, no-one is allowed to talk about climate change unless you live off the grid and have only 1 child?

Nope, not at all.

However if you can't see the issue with this message coming from someone with one of the highest carbon footprints in the country then you're being ridiculous.

Wills lifestyle has an environmental impact that's many multiple times more than the average citizen he's proclaiming too. It's beyond farcical.

Don't get me wrong, I understand why they're championing green issues. It's a pertinent topic, safe enough for them and they've bugger all else to say about the modern world. It's just demonstrates how pointless and anachronistic they are.
