To think Prince William preaching about climate change is another example the monarchy should not exist

Is he having a laugh? His wife and him parade around in designer clothes costing thousands of pounds, live on multiple properties, fly around the world often in jets and he is telling US to do our bit?

I had a chat with DH earlier and we thought it would be a good idea for the queen to hand straight to William but now I'm not sure either and just wish the lot of them would go away and cease to exist as a royal family.

They're taking the piss - when will we no longer stand for a monarchy?

@ChristinaXYZ they REGULARLY fly economy?!? Seriously! I highly bloody doubt it.

It's getting like a member of the RF can't tell the UK public what changes need to be made, what people are doing wrong and how they should behave around climate change, COVID, cost of living and so on without someone calling them hypocrites. They selflessly travel the world to promote action against climate change. They flew to Scotland or Sandringham to reduce the health burden on London after testing positive for COVID and what thanks did they get? The UK's insatiable appetite for photographs of new frocks, wedding and anniversary and childrens' birthday photographs and news stories need to be met. And it gives campaigning newspapers like the Daily Mail something else to print so Keir Starmer isn't always on the front page.

RogueBorg · 08/05/2022 23:55

@Zilla1 I can’t quite work out if you’re joking or not so I’ll assume you are as your comment about selflessly travelling around the world has to be ironic but I’m tired so 🤷‍♀️😂.

Mandodari · 08/05/2022 23:59

I wonder what the carbon footprint of the upcoming celebrations, including a fly past will be?

Vikinga · 09/05/2022 00:05

I don't care about him or the royals but I do care about the climate and the more people talking about it the better.

To be fair @SkerryVore the Royal Family were ahead of the curve on this. Prince Philip was campaigning with the World Wildlife Fund and to save habitats and Prince Charles raising concerns about climate change and lack of biodiversity - insects affected by farming practices etc decades before other people, turning the extensive areas of land they control over to organic farming and supporting important skills like hedge-laying that might otherwise be lost. Not fashionable but important. When they are patrons of these organisations they spend a lot of time doing their homework too. They read-up and are knowledgeable. Yes, they fly but very few people don't fly these days, and Prince William's family often fly economy (unlike his brother who seems to borrow a lot of private jets). I'd far rather be lectured by the royal family than celebrities.

I'd love to see the evidence proving that William and co often fly economy. I mean there was that ridiculous stunt which involved flying an empty plane to them for a point scoring exercise against his brother.

William's flights 2015 - 2020:

48,496 air miles; 10 trips; £477,054; 70 per cent by private jet.

Oh and Harry:

51,362 air miles; seven trips; £442,900; 43 per cent by private jet.

And what would be the alternative to monarchy? living in a republic with president Blair and first lady Cherrie. 😖(shudders)

That's always been my nightmare - Cherie as an elected head of state and all our tacky politicians competing with her. The Queen is above that scrabbling. That's the point of her.

Cascais · 09/05/2022 00:44

They have both made more than 10 and 7 trips

You’ve had nightmares about Cherie Blair being elected President? How very odd. What makes you think she would ever run?

While it’s good to hear that the Queen is above some imaginary petty squabbling, if that’s the point of her she’s even more of a waste of space than I thought.

EveSix · 09/05/2022 01:04

Meh. You don't need to care about what anyone says about climate change; it's not as if it is a matter of opinion. The science is clear and conclusive. Let that suffice and act as if the truth is real. Don't get distracted by hypocrisy-spotting -it matters not one jot. What matters is how you pay attention to science and act accordingly. Tangents like getting riled by what dignitaries or celebrities say or do, will just drain you. We will all be impacted by the changing climate and there will be nothing fair about it, as is already seen elsewhere on the planet. Take heart, OP; it is annoying, but take the high road.

mackthepony · 09/05/2022 01:05

Also very distasteful all the recent pics of Princess Charlotte - yes the child is beautiful, happy birthday etc but that about all the kids in the Ukraine /Syria or even in Britain, abused and living in poverty?

They need to read the room a bit more

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/05/2022 02:34

Prince Philip was campaigning with the World Wildlife Fund and to save habitats

Philip famously said that, if reincarnation exists, he would like to come back as a deadly virus to drastically reduce the population. James Lovelock (granted, not royal) always passionately banged on about the same thing. Both men were the fathers of four children.

Joe Biden could not have made it clearer that he doesn't care in the slightest about climate change when he had several vehicles flown over from a different continent for him to use for relatively short distances, as if there would be no luxury car hire companies based in Glasgow. He was far from the only world leader guilty of that, either.

None of us are perfect, but if you preach to others about something and repeatedly act exactly the opposite, it makes it abundantly clear that you are lying through your teeth and also that you think the 'ordinary people' are very stupid indeed.

Has the Archbishop of Canterbury ever said a 'bad' word when he hit his thumb with a hammer? Possibly: he's only human. However, how would we feel if he arranged a one-man comedy tour of the country's cathedrals where he promised to tell nothing but sweary, racist and otherwise hateful gags that would make Chubby Brown, Jim Davidson, Jimmy Carr and Priti Patel blush and complain that he'd taken it too far? Would we expect anybody to take him seriously the next time he gave a sermon on the Beattitudes or 1 Corinthians 13?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/05/2022 02:36

He was far from the only world leader guilty of that, either.

'That' meaning equivalent hypocritical actions, not necessarily that exact same one.

Superhanz · 09/05/2022 02:36

I'm not interested in anything that lot have to say. They are a bunch of corrupt twats.

They've long had their day.

Pack your bags and fuck off.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/05/2022 02:43

I also don't get the 'justifications' that people give for the horrendous presidents we could end up with if we were to become a republic and scrap the monarchy. The whole point of it would mean that we DON'T just get whom we're given, as we do with a monarchy; if we did end up with President C. Blair/P. Morgan/P. Patel/K. Hopkins or whoever, it would only be because a majority of people had voted for them.

UK democracy is impure and lacking in very many ways, but we still haven't yet reached a point where we would be forced against our will to elect a leader who was chosen for us, whom everybody detested.

And of course, those arguments also overlook the fact that, so long as we have a monarchy, we could end up stuck with a Prince Andrew type (or worse) as head of state.

Robinni · 09/05/2022 03:14

Charles has been a climate advocate very actively since 70s - championing biodiversity and rainforest preservation. Really very ahead of his time and important work done in this area. He engages well with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and has attended various COPs www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/prince-charles-climate-environment/2021/11/01/0f238ab2-39b4-11ec-9662-399cfa75efee_story.html

I believe William is poised to take on this mantle.

Yes their clothes are expensive and they have private flights. But they are the royals and cannot go around wearing Asda. Kate rewears tonnes of things regularly from 5-10yrs ago. It’s unlikely commercial flights would be safe enough in terms of security.

This!

I’m happy for anyone with a public profile to be pushing the climate change agenda. If people don’t start to learn about ecosystem services, biodiversity and the climate we are going to be facing some serious shit in the not so distant future.

You could get rid of a President after a four year term. We are stuck with the RF.

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 09/05/2022 04:21

Its pretty clear his ‘people’ have given him a topic to own. It gives him a purpose.

And yes he’s a hypocrite. Anyone with three children unless the second turned out to be twins cannot claim to be a massive climate activist.

In any case I realised he was full of it when he tried to blame poor Africans for climate change as apparently they have too many kids. Now it’s a fact the population of Africa is increasing (it reduced significantly during the colonial period) whilst Europe’s is declining but even a family of 8 in Congo would consume far less than the average 2.4 Brit family.

He’ll probably find a way to blame the estimated two million adults who can’t afford to eat everyday for any food shortage next whilst he’s treated to a six course meal prepared by his private chef at one of his multiple residences.

Bet he’s gutted H&M have left. He no longer has a human shield protecting him from criticism l.

sashh · 09/05/2022 04:47

The best thing they could do for climate change and everything else is to stop taking money from the public.

They are incredibly rich, own property and have investments, they should start to live within their means.
