...who would continue to do the job they do now if they received a tax-free, obligation-free two million pounds.

If you had that money in your bank (in whatever circumstances make it believable for you) do you quit your job, just reduce your hours, or carry on doing exactly what you're doing now work-wise.

So, you have 2 million, do you:

  1. Reduce your hours - you like your job but wouldn't do it all the time/as much as you do now to maintain an income
  2. Walk right out - you're literally only there to make a living
  3. You continue as you are - you love the work you do each day and enjoy every day of your life

Surely it depends on what stage of life you are at. If you are close to retirement age anyway and £2mill falls into your lap you’d be daft not to retire if you want to.

Lunar27 · 09/05/2022 00:07

#3 for me as I love my job and am too young to retire. Plus my business is still quite small so would be nice to see it grow a bit.

RosesAndHellebores · 09/05/2022 00:14

I've said 3 already but CounsellorTroi, I'm nearly 62 and could take a public sector occupational pension tomorrow if I wanted but I like work.

balboaconstrictor · 09/05/2022 03:39

I'd invest the 2 million but keep working. Maybe reduce my hours or take an early retirement, if the investments paid off.

readingallthebooks · 09/05/2022 03:39

Interested to know why you're asking OP, are you in this situation?

brokengoalposts · 09/05/2022 03:46

You wouldn't see me for dust.

I wouldn't just sit on the money spending a portion every year, my job would essentially become managing and growing my money.

Ratrick · 09/05/2022 04:06

It’s a tough one - I hate working but £2m wouldn’t go that far where I live (it’d buy me a decent house) so I’d either have to move or carry on working (although I would be able to retire earlier).

Toddlerteaplease · 09/05/2022 04:07

I love my job, so no I wouldn't leave!

JeffThePilot · 09/05/2022 04:08

I’m a social worker. I’d quit my job, take six months off, then set up as an independent social worker and pick my contracts.

Aimee1987 · 09/05/2022 04:09
  1. I like my job ut would like more time with my kids
Snugglepumpkin · 09/05/2022 04:10

I would continue as I am but I'd employ more people.

Everything would just be easier with that sort of cushion, but I do love what I do.

k1233 · 09/05/2022 04:15

2M is not a lot of money, you'd have to continue to work (unless you're at retirement age).

20M+ on the other hand, you'd not see me for dust!

sashh · 09/05/2022 04:20

I'm not working due to disability.

With the 2 mil I know the house I would buy, it has lots of small outhouse type buildings, I'd convert some of these to studios and others to accomodation and run craft classes / weekends and rent them out cheaply to local artists / crafters.

TeaBug · 09/05/2022 04:42

I work almost full time on a voluntary basis. So I'd keep doing that. So does dh So we'd just treat ourselves to a few things we can't currently afford. A decent holiday or new furniture.

FangsForTheMemory · 09/05/2022 05:14

I did 2. I didn’t have £2million, just enough to live on. I volunteer one day a week and do a daytime hobby.

daisychain01 · 09/05/2022 05:23

3 for me, I wouldn't give up my job for anything, but might drop 1 day a week and have Day 5 as my volunteering day every week. Currently I shoehorn it in around my day job.

DH and I often talk about "what would we do if we won the Euromillions..." and we've decided we would become philanthropic, investing in local community activities, campaigning for good causes all that jazz.

Next opportunity will be tomorrow, £186M up for grabs (Euromillions)!

FlibbertyGibbitt · 09/05/2022 05:26

I’d have 6 months sick full pay, six months half and then gooooooo 👏👏👏👏

Flamingoose · 09/05/2022 05:32

I work with vulnerable people so I wouldn't just leg it.
I'd carefully support my employer to hand over my job to qualified, competent people, and once my charges had a stable relationship with my replacement I'd leg it.

Rosebel · 09/05/2022 05:34

It sounds a lot but I'm not convinced it would last the rest of my life. So I'd probably put the majority in a high earning account and work until I'm about 50 and then look at retiring.
I already only work part time but I expect my husband would cut down his hours.

I'd definitely quit and so would DP. We'd spend around a quarter of the money on a house somewhere quiet, sunny and cheap and invest the rest to produce an income to live on. We'd also be able to gift some to siblings, eg £50-100k each.

But it very much depends on your age and lifestyle expectations. We're both around 50 and childfree, so £2M would be plenty for us, but I can see that if you're 30, with young DC and live in London, you could spend all the money on a not very exciting property to live in and still need to work to pay the bills and have a life.

IwaswhoIam · 09/05/2022 06:23

I’m currently not working however..

2 million probably isn’t enough for me to walk out of a job completely . If it was a crap job I hated I would because there would be no financial stress while looking for something else . Ideally I would like to work 4 days a week ( 32 hours ) and the 2 million would make that possible .

MangoBiscuit · 09/05/2022 06:25

Number 1. I'd reduce my hours so I don't work at all when DDs are home. I'm flexi time, so they'd probably let me build up hours during term time, and use them during holidays, so long as we planned my work load accordingly.

I enjoy my job, and it gives me a sense of accomplishment. I wouldn't want to stop that completely, but I would like a bit more downtime.

I would also buy a bigger house, and get a cleaner, bliss! 😁

Ophanim · 09/05/2022 06:32

#3 I’m self employed doing a job I love and work from home.

Skinterior · 09/05/2022 12:26

Id keep my job, but I'd hands down refuse to do any stupid Objectives. I'd also only work term time.
