...who would continue to do the job they do now if they received a tax-free, obligation-free two million pounds.

If you had that money in your bank (in whatever circumstances make it believable for you) do you quit your job, just reduce your hours, or carry on doing exactly what you're doing now work-wise.

So, you have 2 million, do you:

  1. Reduce your hours - you like your job but wouldn't do it all the time/as much as you do now to maintain an income
  2. Walk right out - you're literally only there to make a living
  3. You continue as you are - you love the work you do each day and enjoy every day of your life

Option 2 I'm an NHS paramedic (currently stuck outside A&E 3 hours and counting with no obvious end in sight).

IRunbecauseILikeCake · 08/05/2022 17:30

I'd reduce my hours as I do like my job, increase the workload of my voluntary work and invest. I'd do a bit of spending too.

LakieLady · 08/05/2022 17:32

I'm semi-retired and only working because I can't afford to jack in my 17 hours pw job, so I'd be off like a shot if I came into £2m.

I might still do some voluntary work for CAB or similar though.

helpfulperson · 08/05/2022 17:34

I agree that age is a big part of it. I could retire at 55 next year and survive. It would be easy but I wouldn't starve. 2 million would let me walk out of work and be comfortable between pension and the cash. If I was early 30's the calculation would be different.

ToffeeForEveryone · 08/05/2022 17:34

Option 3 so far as work goes - full time - but it would be a looooot easier as I'd get full time home help / cleaner / organiser / childcare to deal with everything else!

I love my job and I'm good at it, but I'm constantly juggling commitments and that's the bit that's soul destroying. If I'm dropping things from my day to day, I'd start with house cleaning, admin and shopping!

stormelf · 08/05/2022 17:34

I'm a stay at home mum so I get I would continue to do that, although actually a £2million win would mean I could put my youngest two into nursery/child minder for a few days a week so I can go back to work part time (previously worked in education and would return to that).

My husband loves his job but it does take its toll on him. I'd imagine he would carry on working but cut his hours down to give him more of a work/life balance

SquirrelFan · 08/05/2022 17:34

Probably 3.

Longingforatikihut · 08/05/2022 17:35

Initially 3. Take it like a death... No rash decisions in the immediate aftermath. Then 1, I might look at reducing my hours and/or starting a business of my own. I'm only in my 30s and as PPs have said, £2mil won't see me to retirement/grave.

InChocolateWeTrust · 08/05/2022 17:36

2m is actually not a lot of money. I'm not 40 yet, I've a lot of years left to fund and kids to set up. I'd definitely keep on with my job just as I am.

Newmumatlast · 08/05/2022 17:37

3 although possibly might cut back on the amount of contracts I accept. Wouldnt go properly part time though as would miss out on the more challenging rewarding stuff.

spinspinsugar55 · 08/05/2022 17:37

#1 for sure. Have been wanting to reduce hours for a while, but also really love what I do and why I do it, so a reduction in hours without the financial worry would be 👌

3luckystars · 08/05/2022 17:38

Cut down the hours but dress a lot better and wouldn’t give as much of a shit either!

SkerryVore · 08/05/2022 17:38

Probably 3 - I'm exceptionally lucky. Both me and DH are self employed, work as and when we need to, doing things we love. We'd do it anyway, even if no one paid us!

It hasn't always been thus, we worked hard to get into this position, and live in a way that enables it.

CoalCraft · 08/05/2022 17:39

I'd stay as I am for the time being. I don't love my job but I like it well enough and I don't think 2 million is "live on it forever" money.

I'd add it to my savings and look forward to retiring earlier than otherwise planned.

lugeforlife · 08/05/2022 17:40

I would leave my job but still work. It would go into my pension/investment pot so I could retire earlier. I'd look for a lower stress role for the last 10 years before I do.

TheSnowyOwl · 08/05/2022 17:42

I’d still do my job but use the money to move house. Housing is so expensive where I am that I might still have a mortgage at the end of it. 😞

Useranon1 · 08/05/2022 17:43

Number 3, I love my job. But when I'm older I'd probably do compressed hours and use the money to travel.

But I'm 30, so £2m would mean roughly £33k a year for life, so I'd like to keep my salary please!

splishsplashsploshsplish · 08/05/2022 17:45

I would stay. I love my job. (Teacher).

Would pay someone to do all my admin though, I hate that part of the job.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 08/05/2022 17:46

It isn't really that much money sadly. I would keep working part time but would also invest to give some additional yearly income.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/05/2022 17:46

2 million wouldn't be enough for me to want to quit work. I'm 31 and if I live for another 60 years that's £30k a year, I could live on that but there wouldn't be much left for luxuries. I'd carry on working and then I could have a much nicer standard of life with my wages alongside the £2 million. I'd probably retire early though.

Xiaoxiong · 08/05/2022 17:47

I love my job, where I work and what I do - there are some people in my team who have made a lot of money already and don't need to work, but do it for fun anyway. I aspire to be that way!

Shergill15 · 08/05/2022 17:47
  1. I'd leave my current job in a heartbeat if I had that option. I'd probably take a bit of time out and finish doing up the house and retrain/look for a job that would allow me to spend more time with DD. Am 40 so it wouldn't be enough to stop work altogether, but would be enough of a buffer for me to take a pay cut, which is out of the question currently
bananaskinny · 08/05/2022 17:48

Loving some of the replies 😂😂😂

I'd personally reduce my hours. I love the job I do but it can be pressurised and eat into family/leisure time. If I could mitigate that then I'd carry on.

HRTQueen · 08/05/2022 17:49

Reduce my hours

I really love my job. I need routine without it I become low in mood and I’m not creative enough to start my own business I also don’t like dealing with money apart from spending it

I would buy a house, would have a cleaner, part time cook to make life even easier

Firelogbridge · 08/05/2022 17:49

I'd just do my job for free but less of it.
