...who would continue to do the job they do now if they received a tax-free, obligation-free two million pounds.

If you had that money in your bank (in whatever circumstances make it believable for you) do you quit your job, just reduce your hours, or carry on doing exactly what you're doing now work-wise.

So, you have 2 million, do you:

  1. Reduce your hours - you like your job but wouldn't do it all the time/as much as you do now to maintain an income
  2. Walk right out - you're literally only there to make a living
  3. You continue as you are - you love the work you do each day and enjoy every day of your life

2 I love my job. A colleague works Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and has a great life balance. I would like to do that.

DH would do the same as me.

ChanceNorman · 08/05/2022 18:22

I'd take a 12 month sabbatical - the max my work allows. I'm not a fan of rash decisions even with £2m in the bank.

However I suspect after the year it would be number 2.

I enjoy my work, I like the people, I'm good at it. But I'm sure with £1m spent on house/cars etc and £1m invested to provide life long secure income I could find other things I enjoy doing more!

SagaNorenLansrimMalmo · 08/05/2022 18:24

number 3 - because £2million isn’t enough for me to never work again - I have 30 years left to work and in that time the pension contributions alone of my current (very secure ) job are worth almost that much to me. So it would be a very lovely injection of cash which I was use to pay off the mortgage, salt away for deposits for the kids / uni fees and then give the rest to my sisters.

Siepie · 08/05/2022 18:24

3 - I don't enjoy every day of my life, but over all I do enjoy my job, like my colleagues, and benefit from the intellectual stimulation.

I do find full-time work plus housework stressful, so I'd use some of the money to pay for a cleaner and laundry/ironing service.

Blaze1886 · 08/05/2022 18:27

On the whole I enjoy my job but I wouldn't continue to do it because of the commute and hours. Reducing my hours or going part time wouldn't work as I'd just go back to chaos

I would simply text my manager and tell him I won't be coming back. I'd probably give my colleagues some money

My manager said recently that if he won the lottery he'd give me £100k on the basis that I walk out immediately

I'd possibly do a p/t job with 0% responsibility. A bit like Kevin Spacey in American Beauty

A580Hojas · 08/05/2022 18:27

I'm pushing 60 so would walk away from my job. It's pretty cushy - I work 16 hours pw mainly from home and bring home 1100 pounds a month and there's no stress. I quite like it and atm we really need this money. I'd like to earn more and would be happy to work longer hours, just finding another job at my age feels impossible.

HelloTreacle9 · 08/05/2022 18:32
  1. Plus I’d invest in the small firm I work for so I have a real stake in its future. The pay isn’t great but it’s my dream job.
PortiaFimbriata · 08/05/2022 18:35

Option 4: keep my job, not because I love it too much to be parted from it, but because £2 million isn't the sum it once was, given my various obligations.

If you made it ten million I'd be out the door so fast I'd leave skid marks on the carpet.

SpeedofaSloth · 08/05/2022 18:37

I would look for part time hours.

oakleaffy · 08/05/2022 18:42

I do know someone who came into {Not worked for} over £1,000,000 cash, and a beautiful house and lots of land... Their lives have changed, never need worry about the bills again.

They are self employed though.

Topgub · 08/05/2022 18:43

Is the implication that people who say they would keep working are lying?

I cant imagine doing nothing, not working in any shape or form

I couldn't cope with that.

I certainly don't do my job for the money.

I might look for a different role.

OwlIceCrem · 08/05/2022 18:44

I absolutely would carry on as I am. My husband’s job already means I’m working out of choice (for context, I realise how fortunate I am to have that option). I’m a secondary teacher. I feel really sad and worried when I see the threads on here where it seems most people want to get out of the job and dissuade others from joining the profession.

doadeer · 08/05/2022 18:45

I like working but I would just choose different projects and clients if money was no object and pick areas that really interested me.

I do marketing and business support.

PupInAPram · 08/05/2022 18:47

Walk right out. I don't hate my job but I'm in my 60s and just very tired of working and tired generally. Life has been quite a grind as a working single parent. A rest would be lovely.

TreesAGreenInTheNorth · 08/05/2022 18:47

I'd bide my time and come up with a life plan before I quit work. I like my job and live alone/think I might struggle with not having a daily purpose or contact with people.

Penguinsaregreat · 08/05/2022 18:48

Not sure for 2 million as it's not enough for me to help my dcs out.
20 million and I wouldn't even work my notice.
I would keep on part of my job, I have 2 roles. Unfortunately the part I really enjoy is not guaranteed work.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 08/05/2022 18:49

I'm a TA although I have a teaching qualification so already 'downsized'!I love my job so I think I might carry on and see if I could persuade DH to be a SAHD/house husband. We're late 46/51 respectively so would have to do sums to see if it was feasible to actually give up work.

If I won a huge amount I'd do a couple of short days volunteering in my school . (Not that I've thought about it much!)

rainbowzebra05 · 08/05/2022 18:49

I'd quit my "real" job, but focus more on my small business as it'd be possible to invest in growth. Potentially chase the career I actually wanted but couldn't do due to pay and hours not fitting childcare.

transformandriseup · 08/05/2022 18:49

I would leave as on a low income now so would make it stretch pretty far plus it would gain a fair bit of interest.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/05/2022 18:50

Funnily enough I've had this very conversation with my boss. I would maybe take a day or 2 to get my head round it, then continue until they found a replacement and they were trained up.

Phos · 08/05/2022 18:50

I'd be outta there. I'd do something lower paid with less stress.

stimpyyouidiot · 08/05/2022 18:50

I would absolutely stay at my job. I love my colleagues so much 💜

YouHaveYourFathersBreasts · 08/05/2022 18:50

They wouldn’t see me for dust. I don’t hate anyone I work with and I don’t intensely hate my job. But I wouldn’t hang about.

Butchyrestingface · 08/05/2022 18:52

Reduce my hours.

No chance would £2m keep someone as profligate as me going for the next 30-40 years.

If it were £20m, reckon I'd take the risk and retire.

Onwards22 · 08/05/2022 18:52

1 or 3

I absolutely love my job but I have to do a lot of extra unpaid hours in the evenings and weekends (teacher) and so I’d either try and reduce my hours or get a cleaner etc to make life easier at home.
