to not want to go on holiday ever again

Anyone else just not bothered about going on holiday and would rather be home?

Just wondering if how many others feel the same way. I'm just not bothered and even find it a hassle. I could not care less if I was never to go abroad again in my life. I do like weekends away but anything longer I just want to be home again.

@dreamingbohemian I'm totally with you- only do flights between 10 am and 7pm - and returns too like a villa or apartment for the space but do little actual catering. Never book packages- get taxis or trains from airports, always pay for fastrack security, always pay for extra legroom etc Have done AI twice but thought it was expensive, watered down drinks and quite repetitive food - so never did it again after our son was 11. (He's now 23) some of the prices people quote on here , I'm gobsmacked I've had way better quality holidays just booking it all separately. I think a lot of folks might change their minds when they no longer need to book school holidays etc - and can go in early July or September .

heronsinflight · 08/05/2022 19:24

I usually end up going abroad four or five times a year for work and tbh I enjoy that much more than foreign holidays. I'm not paying, there are local clients there to look after me and show me around, and there's an actual reason to be there. I can't really be doing with spending thousands to drag the family to Birmingham airport at four in the morning so they can argue for a week in the sun.

@TheGlitterati

But holidays are about getting to see the world, broaden your horizons and your mind, see other cultures and how life functions in different parts of the world, you get to experience different climate, landscapes, food etc, a complete change of scene and break away from the norm, do once in a life time activities like swim with dolphins, etc etc

could you really go without that for the rest of your life? Would you not get bored? Or just feel there was more to life than the vicinity you live in?

Well, I could, yes. I'm pretty content. I don't need that constant external input. I travelled around quite a bit from 18-25, mostly on my own, including living abroad for a couple of years, so it's not a matter of "confidence". What exactly is meant by "broadening horizons", anyway? Materially, what does it mean? I travelled. The food was different. I saw interesting things. I spoke other languages. But in the end, I think I gained more and was more changed and inspired by the many hours I spent in libraries and cafes and museums as a student. I think history is the foreign country that spoke to me most, and you get that from the written word in the comfort of your own home. People are different, and it's perfectly possible to have a rich and interesting inner life without feeling the need to jet off constantly and ooh and ah at Other Cultures (TM)

So no, many people do not "get bored" just because they're not doing a thing that was unimaginable for most humans who ever lived and is still an unreachable luxury for many today.

Plus, as I've got older, I just like my own bed, my own food in the fridge, all my clothes and toiletries (hate living out of a bag). I've never liked flying and agree with a pp that people will bang on about the climate crisis and then jump on a plane to go lie in the sun, I mean...

claretblue79 · 08/05/2022 19:26

Surely the answer to people who ask why others don't enjoy something they do is everyone is different. Personally, I love where I live, have been abroad in the past and just didn't enjoy any aspect of it. Even going somewhere in this country doesn't excite me. I get pleasure in life from what I do and that's enough for me

Badbadbunny · 08/05/2022 19:28

EileenGC · 08/05/2022 17:13

You can go abroad without flying, that's for sure! (Unless you're in Australia!)

Not to where I'd want to go, i.e. America, China, etc

BreakorMake · 08/05/2022 19:29

Right, I want a chauffeur to the airport, a person to queue and check in my bags, or if not possible security wise, a VIP fast track check in/security line. An hour or so in the nicest lounge I can get, and a personal valet/assistant to accompany me to a private jet.

If I can't have that I am not going, and I am stamping my feet goodo.

On the realistic side of things, is there really anything worse than spending hours standing in a queue full of randomers like myself, crying babies, stressed out adults, drunks, messers, queue jumpers and complainers? The wait in security, check in and boarding is nearly as long as the flight itself. And the heat, and the crowds, and the price of a measly cup of coffee. It is bloody torture!

I'm older now with no patience anymore. But I did my travelling when younger and it was the same as above, but I didn't care at the time.

I am going by boat to Spain next time. First class train, top of the range cabin, de luxe lounge, the works! I can do it now and also help save the planet, although I doubt my little contribution to reducing air travel will help much.

There are days I don’t want to leave the house for feeling exhausted/lazy

BUT I would happily get on a plane and go on holiday so can’t imagine feeling like that

genuinely curious, what makes you feel it involves lots of hassle

now with covid rules mostly changed it isn’t nearly as much hassle as it was last year

NickAndJay · 08/05/2022 19:32

@LuckySantangelo35

I’m not sure I agree that a superficial visit that gives you a false confidence in any opinion you may subsequently form about another part of the world is better than nothing.

How many languages other than your native tongue do you know? I love learning them and can’t see why you wouldn’t have half a dozen under your belt! And I would bet you learning another language and reading the literature and history of another culture in the native language from a home in the UK would give you a hell of a lot more insight into the than going to a resort for a week.

ivykaty44 · 08/05/2022 19:32

It depends on your mindset I guess

I make the journey part of the holiday and relax with a glass of wine to start with - the night before if driving somewhere.

Travelling for many is stressful though and I see this at airports and on the ferry. Some people make things more stressful than they need to be to my mind

yeah I don’t go to resorts so you’re wrong there. I do air b’n’bs

Is being anxious a mental health issue? Doesn't everyone get anxious sometimes?

Yes. to both.

Everyone. gets anxious, different triggers, different reasons. But it can also develop into a mental health illness, my DD is currently starting therapy for it.

She loves going on holiday but it restricts what she can do at the moment. So currenlty we fly/drive and stay at one place and do day trips/activities. She has the hotel/villa as her safe place. A planned road trip. with 2-3 days at one place and then off again was shelved until she is stable enough to deal with uncertainty.

Luckily the anxiety is not crippling her too much to not let her go and enjoy a holiday.

zafferana · 08/05/2022 19:42

Travelling is my absolute favourite thing to do, but YANBU for not feeling the same way. We're all different.

I daydream about travel all the time, planning trips I want to do, reading about other places, updating my mental bucket list. Having said that, a lot of people's holidays hold no interest for me - travelling somewhere to sit in a resort by a pool and never explore where I am is anathema to me. I like to explore and get to know a place, eat the local food, talk to people, browse the shops, visit the museums, go for a run around those unfamiliar streets. Just typing that gives me a frisson of excitement.

Well, could you give me an example of a non-trivial insight about another culture you’ve gleaned in an AirBnB then?

NewYorkCityDreamer · 08/05/2022 19:46

I find this so difficult as I have ADHD so I constantly want to be away. But I also have autism so as soon as I’ve booked a trip I stress about it! I’m okay once I’m there but the few weeks beforehand are awful. I always seem to forget about them when booking the next trip though.

Currently have Lake District, USA, Brighton, Germany booked at the moment. We may squeeze somewhere else in before the end of the year

Bpdqueen · 08/05/2022 19:46

I feel the same I don't live near an airport or drive so that's the first hassle. I have a fear of flying so worry for months beforehand and then when I'm actually there I really struggle with anxiety which is worse when im away from home so i can't relax and enjoy it.

ChickinMarango · 08/05/2022 19:46

We’re abroad right now, two kids, 4yr old and nearly 5 month old. 14 days plus 24 hrs travelling either side. Connecting flights either side to save money, 35 degree heat, Disneyworld 😂

At the moment I’d say yes happily… ask me again I’m a week or so when I’m home 😝

LuckySantangelo35 · 08/05/2022 19:47

@NickAndJay

ah no, you got me! You’re completely right, there is no value in going on holiday! We should all just watch programmes about different places on telly and we’d be so much more cultured, it’s practically the same as being there! If you go on hol for one or two weeks, you won’t get to see any culture or how people live or anything like that, you might as well just stay at home , you couldn’t possibly learn anything anything from a two week stay! 👍

balboaconstrictor · 08/05/2022 19:50

I prefer staying home to travel, as an adult. Preparing is a hassle, the journey is stressful, the pets can't come along, so that all has to be sorted (and I worry about them), no other place is as comfortable and restful as my own home, it's expensive, and I return feeling very tired and in need of a recovery period. Blah.

I'd much rather put the money towards something to feather our nest, nice food/games/entertainment, hobby supplies, etc. Some friends and family obviously don't get it and think it's weird to not want to "go" somewhere on holiday. 🙄

Heartoverheadheadoverheart · 08/05/2022 19:51

I'm in two minds about this. Not that we have the money to go and take fancy holidays anyway and even a few days away in the UK is plagued by counting the pennies so never really experiencing all that we could.

On one hand I would love nothing more than to spend the rest of my life travelling the world, meeting people and hearing their stories. Yes, their are multi cultural places in the UK but what about the stories of those that never get the chance to emigrate. It is the experiencing all of the world and not the relaxing part of a holiday I like the idea of.

On the other hand, with a disabled partner and child, work and study I already have a very stressful life. I just think the hassle of a stressful holiday being away trying to manage all of this would tip me over the edge. Plus the thought of getting back and everything has built up, I would always be worrying.

Perhaps the idea of lots of travelling at present is nicer than the reality, yet if I could go travelling for free I couldn't see me turning it down!

How can anyone not want to go abroad?

I’m not being goady, genuinely curious.

It’s fabulous!!

Honestly I can’t see how that cannot appeal! Unless you have little kids i can understand but otherwise why wouldn’t you love that? As I say, I’m just so curious about this

It all depends on the individual doesn't it? Maybe they lived abroad for years and realised it is all a bit " another paradise, same shit". Maybe they have done their fair share and cba with all the hassle of travelling now. Maybe they are jaded. Maybe they realise the advantages of holidaying in their own country? I don't think swimming with dolphins is a good example of something you would really want to do - interacting with a wild creature forced to do it?

LubaLuca · 08/05/2022 19:52

Holidays are our best treat to ourselves and I don't find them to be stressful at all. Even when I've had a delayed flight it's been more interesting than being at home doing mundane things.

Keladrythesaviour · 08/05/2022 19:53

I live for holidays and travel. When we do it I actually feel alive, the rest of the year just feels like a count down to the next holiday. I love coming home...for about 3 days and then I'm ready to go again. I think I was born with permanently itchy feet and wish I could find myself a life/role where I could travel for circa 6 months of the year - a month here and a month away would be ideal.
I dreamt for a while of a house in italy but in all honesty I'd feel suffocated by that as I'm more interested in what's around the corner of the next road than I am with a particular place.

Doesn't appeal to me much. Most countries with great weather and scenery have lots of poverty and treat animals badly- it's of no interest to me to go and view that kind of exploitation and cruelty.

LuluBlakey1 · 08/05/2022 19:54

Flying is terrible for the environment.
