If your dog will bark at the beach don’t take them?

At the beach. Someone has brought their dog alone. It has been relentlessly barking for 30 mins+ now at the water’s edge. How is this acceptable?! I didn’t bring my own dog because he’s a total clown at the beach. I also wouldn’t let my child stand and scream for 30 mins.

is this a thing? Do people do this?! AIBU or is it a “this is how their dog has fun” thing and I should lighten up?

No I'm a dog owner and I wouldn't allow that

XenoBitch · 08/05/2022 12:50

Maybe it is the first time the dog has been to the beach and it is getting excited about the sea and waves.

YABU though. It is a nice day, so the beaches will be busy with lots of noise.

Auntieobem · 08/05/2022 12:51

Yabu. Assuming its not your private beach then you should expect noise. Dog was likely to have been having a great time.

FawnFrenchieMum · 08/05/2022 12:52

Well I wouldn’t keep my dog there relentlessly barking but I guess you don’t know what your dog will do until you try it.

Were on holiday right now and the kid next door seems to do a lot of relentless crying.

SushiShopSearch · 08/05/2022 12:53

We sat in a pub garden this week and a dog barked continuously. The wanker owner kept saying "shhh" and suchlike.

balalake · 08/05/2022 12:53

Depends on the beach and perhaps the time you go, in my opinion. A weekday morning when few people are about is completely different from a warm Sunday like today.

TheOriginalEmu · 08/05/2022 12:58

I mean, it’s a public beach. I would be irritated probably, but I don’t think that’s their problem. It’s a dog friendly beach, dogs will do things on it. If you don’t want dogs disturbing you, go to a beach dogs can’t go on.

vivainsomnia · 08/05/2022 12:59

Dog owner and find this unacceptable.

Mariposista · 08/05/2022 13:10

Hard to comment as I am the (probably lucky) owner of a very young and excitable, but totally mute dog hahaha he has just never found his bark (he can do it but we reckon he is just lazy).
Ermm a beach isn't the place to go if you want silence on a sunny day? If we apply that rule, people should remove their tantruming children, stop cheering while playing games, stop laughing with enjoyment in the sea.

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:11

If it makes a difference it’s very, VERY annoying bark. Sounds like a honking goose 😃

as I said, I have a dog so it’s not that I don’t like them, but there’s a difference between a bit of background beach noise and a dog just barking and barking and barking for aaaaages, surely? The beach is actually fairly empty too (no idea why, it’s a glorious day!)

I love dogs at the beach and the barking doesn’t bother me, I like seeing them play and have fun. They get very excited especially if they are puppies but the fresh air does wonders for them.

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:13

@Mariposista

i don’t want silence! Very happy to hear all children playing and general beach noise - maybe a bit of barking. But I am talking about every 5-10 seconds of barking for 45 mins. As I said if my child was having a tantrum I would just leave them screaming for 45 mins because “beach noise 🤷🏻‍♀️“

Very interesting to read other points of view

My dog thought a woman floating in the sea was in trouble so he barked continuously until I went to see if she was alright. She responded by throwing things at him Shock

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:17

@WhackingPhoenix

😆😆😆😆

@WhackingPhoenix

laughing at your dog and his safety concern, not the mean woman throwing stuff!

A dog displaying its excitement by barking is not the same as a child having a tantrum.

SailingNotSurfing · 08/05/2022 13:19

There are way more beaches where dogs are banned from 30th April - 30th September. Go to one of those.

TooBored1 · 08/05/2022 13:20

Life long dog owner/frequent beach goer here - probably unacceptable.

IF it's a young dog AND the owner was totally engaged with the dog, supporting it in a new environment and correcting it's behaviour, then fine.

If it's a dog joining in with a fabulous game with its family, acceptable for a reasonable time.

If it's a dog barking consistently for more than a couple minutes without the owner correcting the dog, or a dogleft alone on the beach while owner is in the water, unacceptable:

  1. It's rubbish for other beach users and is NOT the type of noise one would expect on the beach at any time.
  2. It's rubbish for the dog.
Newfluff · 08/05/2022 13:20

Depends. If you are on the only dog beach for miles and getting cross at dog the yabu.

As was the family picnicking on the only stretch of beach where dogs are allowed (it is zoned off and v clear) who screamed at the golden retriever who dropped his ball on their mat.

Booboobibles · 08/05/2022 13:22

Why don’t you just move a bit further along the beach?

Dogs find beaches so exciting and it’s lovely to watch! How strange to leave your dog at home because of a bit of barking….he’s missed out on so much fun! Anyway, honking geese are wonderful🙂

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 08/05/2022 13:24

The dog I walk wouldn’t do that but I’d have no problems with another dog doing it.

For me, it is no different to a bairn screaming with excitement when they’re playing.

Can it be a bit irritating if it goes on and on? Aye. But everyone and everything deserves to go giddy with happiness once in a while.

If I was that ticked off, I’d move and let them crack on with loving their day. 😊

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:26

A dog displaying its excitement by barking is not the same as a child having a tantrum

from the point of view of people having to listen to prolonged and unpleasant noise I have to disagree!

How strange to leave your dog at home because of a bit of barking

for some reason the beach is somewhere he becomes a total lunatic. It’s impossible to manage a toddler and a child and keep track of him and I think it would ruin a lot of peoples time if he ran amok and kept dropping stones in their lap for them to throw! It’s a shame as he likes it but on balance it just creates a supremely stressful day because I don’t want to ruin other people’s Sunday (which is reasonable)

can’t move further up the beach as at a beach hut

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:26

Im
really surprised at how many people wouldn’t be bothered by this! But maybe it’s one of those things that isn’t annoying unless you’re listening to it

I agree. Dogs barking are such a pain in the arse. It's one of the worst noises ever.

Thing is, many owners think it's fine. "It's what dogs do" to quote my neighbour (owner of v barky dog).

It's also the biggest reason for anti-social behaviour complaints.

If you can't get your dog to behave well, then you shouldn't have one.
