If your dog will bark at the beach don’t take them?

At the beach. Someone has brought their dog alone. It has been relentlessly barking for 30 mins+ now at the water’s edge. How is this acceptable?! I didn’t bring my own dog because he’s a total clown at the beach. I also wouldn’t let my child stand and scream for 30 mins.

is this a thing? Do people do this?! AIBU or is it a “this is how their dog has fun” thing and I should lighten up?

I’m surprised so many seem to think letting a dog bark for 30-45min is acceptable when there are other people around. Surly if you can’t calm your dog down you leave. Same with a tantruming child, as OP pointed out. That is not « expecting silence » 🙄

We’ve just spent a week on him day in a lovely area of the south coast. Everything was perfect apart from the bloody dogs. There was almost constant barking from one dog then the next. It was so irritating and intrusive.

We witnessed some ridiculous dog owner behaviour including a man who picked up his dog whilst it was actually shitting and brought it into the restaurant where we were having lunch, asking for some paper towels so he could clear up the shit. The waitress had to shout at him to take the dog out, he said “I’m only want to clear up the mess, I’ll just leave it then”.

Why is barking seen as misbehaving? It is how dogs communicate something... and at the beach it is likely to be excitement.
It is like saying children laughing is misbehaving.

Of course it’s not. And barking once or twice to alert you to something is fine but continuously is not. I taught my dog to be quiet when needed. Sounds like you have no control over your animals. And you can’t equate dogs and children. I know it’s a mumsnet thing but they are not remotely the same.

I like that you assume I have no control over my dog. She is a greyhound, and we are a week into May, during which I she has barked a total of one time (at a dog that was a bit too interested in her). I am sure one bark in 5 months is not "out of control".

InChocolateWeTrust · 08/05/2022 17:45

Yanbu OP. 5-10 mins of an excited dog who then gets distracted away etc, normal.

45 minutes of continuous loud barking? No. I'd expect the owners to have moved pup away from whatever was getting them so het up, distracted them etc, or if needed just taken them off for a bit time calm down.

Just as I wouldnt let my kid scream excitedly for 45 minutes, either.

So you have taught her not to bark excessively then? Exactly.

InChocolateWeTrust · 08/05/2022 17:48

A dog barking loudly is more like comparing children squealing/shrieking/screaming continuously, than laughing.

No, I haven't. No need to as she naturally does not bark. Greyhounds are known for not barking

Trixiefirecracker · 08/05/2022 17:51

Any kind of loud repetitive nose is anti-social. If kids/children/dogs/machines were doing it, it would be same and it would be annoying and disturb the peace. Dogs barking is not like children ‘laughing’. How ridiculous.

knowinglesseveryday · 08/05/2022 17:52

I'd expect a bit of barking and some noise from kids. Relentless yelling or barking is unacceptable.

If a dog barking out in a public place is anti-social, then feel free to flag down a PCSO and have it dealt with. I bet they wont bother.

Our dog that barks around water is otherwise very well trained. Great recall. He just barks around water and we haven’t found anything to stop him yet.

Our other dog only barks at home (a lot), never on walks/days out. Again, she is otherwise well trained.

Our 2 other dogs rarely bark. They’re all rescues and we’ve worked with trainers with all of them, but we haven’t been able to stop the barking. Barking doesn’t necessarily mean you have no control over your dogs.

NotMyDust · 08/05/2022 18:01

We had a beach barker and would make sure to choose a less popular beach (yes they do exist even on the south coast), engage/play with him, take him off for walks, not stay too long etc, as a courtesy to other users.

We sat in a pub garden this week and a dog barked continuously. The wanker owner kept saying "shhh" and suchlike.

I was in a cafe recently. There was a play area and one kid was full on screaming all the time. Their mum also had a baby, and she changed the nappy on the table.
Granted, we were all stuck in an indoor enclosed space. Not nice at all.

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 18:42

I have a dog and I have children and I think it’s reasonable to compare them in the respect that people who have had them chose to have them and it’s up to parents to mitigate how much they impact others, within reason. A dog barking/honking in front of the sea for 45 minutes is absurd. So would a child shrieking for that amount of time.

dogs (and, dare I say, children) can be very irritating if they aren’t yours (and sometimes if they are!) - I understand a dog is communicating but barking for 45 minutes is communicating what?! Presumably either they are distressed for some reason or just yelling “WATER! WATER!” In dog language. If I just sat there for 45 mins yelling “WATER! WATER!” I think people would get annoyed (the thought is really amusing me currently though)

Ridiculous. Dogs bark. Same as seagulls crying, kids laughing and shouting to each other. Unless it's your private beach YABU.

SecretVictoria · 08/05/2022 18:57

Oh God. This has reminded me of the holiday in Dorset when I was about 14; with my friend and her parents. Went into Weymouth for the day, parents went into town to get some shopping, me and friend went to beach with the dog. Friend popped to the loo, dog saw the beach and went MENTAL! Normally placid, calm, well trained started tearing across the beach, chasing people/balls, crashing through sunbathing families. Friend came back to find me and a lifeguard trying to catch the dog 😳😂

OldWivesTale · 08/05/2022 19:03

Go to one of the majority of beaches that don't allow dogs then

Dogs bark

continuously for 45 mins?

For as long as the sea, pond, lake, canal, river or swimming pool is in view in my dogs case. We give him something to carry in his mouth but he still tries to bark. He’ll put it down to bark properly. And even howls to the water on occasion. 😂
