If your dog will bark at the beach don’t take them?

At the beach. Someone has brought their dog alone. It has been relentlessly barking for 30 mins+ now at the water’s edge. How is this acceptable?! I didn’t bring my own dog because he’s a total clown at the beach. I also wouldn’t let my child stand and scream for 30 mins.

is this a thing? Do people do this?! AIBU or is it a “this is how their dog has fun” thing and I should lighten up?

Only on MN is not wanting to listen to a dog bark every 5-10 seconds for 45 mins “an expectation of silence” 😃

Only on MN is expecting everyone to do what they want in a busy public space and complaining about noise in a crowded area 😆

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:50

@IrishSee

im sorry / it’s obviously a lot worse if you’re stuck in your house listening to it!

My dog is a knob at the beach, so she stays at home. Drives me mad how happy people are to inconvenience others. Yanbu

Precisely. People are so entitled these days, they think everyone elses enjoyment should be curtailed because of their own selfish behaviour. Same with out of control kids in restaurants, loud sweary people in small spaces, bad parkers etc, etc. It really is getting worse, more and more of these idiots.

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:51

It’s not exactly a crowded beach!

Dogs aren't allowed on any of the beaches near to me from May to September. , so they don't annoy/disturb families.

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:11

If it makes a difference it’s very, VERY annoying bark. Sounds like a honking goose 😃

as I said, I have a dog so it’s not that I don’t like them, but there’s a difference between a bit of background beach noise and a dog just barking and barking and barking for aaaaages, surely? The beach is actually fairly empty too (no idea why, it’s a glorious day!)

Agree 100%
I can't bear barking dogs, {Dog owner}
Certain dogs {Breeds} have very irritating barks.

I'd a bit dim to be yapping for a whole half hour... One or two barks are acceptable if it hasn't seen the sea before, but inane barking for half an hour is a bit pointless.

It's owner should be walking it, or doing something to distract it from barking.

thetemptationofchocolate · 08/05/2022 13:54

The gulls will be all hanging round the chippy, that's why they are quiet. Waiting to pounce on the unwary...

worraliberty · 08/05/2022 13:56

I've got 2 dogs and relentless barking for half an hour would do my head in.

Cherrysoup · 08/05/2022 13:56

Sounds distressing for the poor dog. How has it gone from 30 to 45 minutes?

Summerholidayorcovidagain · 08/05/2022 13:29

For the past 7 months at least I am awoken at 6am by barking 7 days a week. Sometimes up to 2 hours.. Apparently nothing the council can do. I feel your pain op. Be glad it will only be for today.

That must be awful.
Mum moved house partly because of a constantly yapping breed the owners bought for their DC.
But now one of her other neighbours has a dog {Owner is in their Eighties}that hardly ever gets taken out, so barks and sounds bored out of it's mind.
Can't blame it.
Far too many dogs aren't trained or given the exercise they need.

I’d be mortified if my dog barked for over half an hour non stop with other people around, it’s surely just curtesy of fellow beach users to have a bit of respect.

@coffeecupsandfairylights

we are only here as we are with friends who have a beach hut here! Had no idea about dog friendly/not. Also in general a bit of barking is fine. But 45 mins of barking without a break is not the same as a bit of barking!

@420Bruh ha glad it’s not just my dog 😆

Yeah, I'm not disagreeing that it's annoying, but I just think going to a dog-friendly beach and then complaining about dogs is a bit daft, really - though I appreciate you're not necessarily there by choice.

Just to me, it's a bit like when people go to dog-friendly pubs and then complain that there are dogs in them, lol.

I'd agree with you, mostly because continuous barking sounds more like distress than fun for the dog. Continuous, disproportionate noise is also unreasonable, whoever is making it - although what constitutes "disproportionate" is probably subjective.

Whammyyammy · 08/05/2022 14:10

A dog barking constantly annoys me in any setting, not just the beach. But that said, kids screeching and screaming constantly annoys me more 🤷‍♂️
Also does the beach not have a restriction on dogs on that beach during summer?

Frolicinameadow · 08/05/2022 14:17

One of my dogs is an excitable idiot. He barks when he gets excited, but not a continuous bark. Even at that he is shushed and we reinforce his training to behave nicely. He loves the beach and wants to be friends with all the humans and other dogs there - as sweet as this is it’s not fair for others. So I bring him early in the morning. He runs around and has a swim, runs some more, digs some holes, barks and the wind until he has himself tired and then we go home.
I prefer dogs to humans in most situations but even I agree that a continuously barking dog is very irritating.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 08/05/2022 14:17

I am taking my dog to the beach for a little break in a few weeks. I love seeing the penny drop when she gets the sand in her paws and realises where she is. She then bombs about like a mad ass. She is nearly 12, and it is so lovely seeing her turn into a puppy again for a while.

Tis a beautiful thing xeno 🥲

HennesAndMoritz · 08/05/2022 14:17

OP, why are you mums netting on the beach? Just go to another part of the beach or listen to music on headphones or go for a walk. You sound very sensitive.

hangrylady · 08/05/2022 14:22

XenoBitch · 08/05/2022 13:17

A dog displaying its excitement by barking is not the same as a child having a tantrum.

It is a bit. Neither can help themselves.

NewCharacterUnlocked · 08/05/2022 14:28

One of our dogs barks a lot at the beach, he gets really excited playing around water. He’s a quiet dog other than when he sees water, even on TV. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Another one of our dogs is very quiet anywhere outside the house, spends her time at the beach running in and out the water and digging but no barking. However she will bark a lot at home if she sees anything move out of the window, even a leaf.
The noise wouldn’t bother me, it’s a public beach and as long as dogs are allowed, there’s not much you can do. Beaches are often noisy.

HarlanPepper · 08/05/2022 14:28

Dog barking - fine

Dog barking continuously for over half an hour - not fine.

Saucery · 08/05/2022 14:28

I don’t mind barking dogs on a beach. Screaming or crying children annoy me, but I keep that to myself because that’s my own judgy problem to manage.

The usual beach we go to, our dog is silent. Lots of running about, digging etc but no barking. We took her to a different beach and she was a total knobhead. 🤷‍♀️ The waves were different and it was a pebble beach. I ended up looking for sea glass on my own while DH walked along the prom where she couldn’t see me. Every time she caught sight of me she barked frantically. We’re going to do a lot more work on Behaving On All Types Of Beach 😆

There are way more beaches where dogs are banned from 30th April - 30th September. Go to one of those.
