If your dog will bark at the beach don’t take them?

At the beach. Someone has brought their dog alone. It has been relentlessly barking for 30 mins+ now at the water’s edge. How is this acceptable?! I didn’t bring my own dog because he’s a total clown at the beach. I also wouldn’t let my child stand and scream for 30 mins.

is this a thing? Do people do this?! AIBU or is it a “this is how their dog has fun” thing and I should lighten up?

I’d personally do stuff with my dog and try and stop it from barking.

However unless it is your beach you can’t police what other people do.

Last year we went to the beach and people were playing loud music, swearing and smoking on a very crowded family beach. Totally inconsiderate, but not much we could do. Apart from laugh when the belly flopped in the water and leave early.

Anapurna222478063 · 08/05/2022 14:34

Obviously YANBU.

Loads of sensible replies here from responsible dog owners who wouldn’t leave their dog to bark ignoring them for 45 mins.

Eastlyne · 08/05/2022 14:36

People are arseholes with their dogs at the beach, I used to live by the beach in Edinburgh and it's incredible the way the owners let them act. It's as if it doesn't count as a real place and people there aren't affected by their dogs.

Staffy1 · 08/05/2022 14:37

Just get over it, it’s not like it’s a permanent thing for you. Yes, I would take my child to the beach if he shouted loudly non stop, which he does and can’t be stopped, but I’m not locking him in the bedroom for the rest of his life just because he might annoy someone for a brief period.

707smile · 08/05/2022 14:38

It's possible that the owners are staying in a holiday rental and not able to leave their dog in the house or something? But they should still move to another spot on the beach to make sure other beach goers aren't having to deal with the noise for too long.

SunscreenCentral · 08/05/2022 14:40

I'd find this so annoying. YANBU

Whisp3r · 08/05/2022 14:40

I don't know what sort of beaches you go to but I could bring a barking dog to the beaches near me and nobody would be in earshot. I would bring a barking dog there if I had one and wanted to. I wouldn't bring a dog, barking or not, to a crowded beach. I wouldn't go to a crowded beach.

Dammitthisisshit · 08/05/2022 14:52

YANBU. I don’t have a dog, but certainly have removed DC from places when having loud tantrums.
its twattish not to.
dog gets excited and barks for a minute - fine. Dog barking for more than 5 minutes - not fine.

also those telling the OP to just move - read the OPs posts! There’s a reason she is where she is.

Im
really surprised at how many people wouldn’t be bothered by this! But maybe it’s one of those things that isn’t annoying unless you’re listening to it

They’re BSing. YANBU

Only on MN is not wanting to listen to a dog bark every 5-10 seconds for 45 mins “an expectation of silence” 😃

Don't worry about it.

If you'd posted I took my dog to the beach and she barked at top volume non stop for 45 minutes and I noticed a horrible woman looking pissed off. AIBU to think she had no right to be miffed and my dog was only enjoying herself...

You would be flayed alive!

BoredZelda · 08/05/2022 14:58

Thing is, many owners think it's fine. "It's what dogs do" to quote my neighbour (owner of v barky dog).

My neighbour’s the same. He has 3 barky dogs. He wasn’t at all happy when I pointed put that there are dozens of dogs on our estate and only his bark all the time, every time they are in the garden. And that if a dog is barking like that all the time, it’s not a happy dog and maybe he should be more concerned about his dogs.

Wetblanket78 · 08/05/2022 15:01

I once took my son to the beach when he was about two. Just me and him. First time I took him without his sister and he wasn't happy. Dropped to the ground and screamed and wouldn't get up. Shoot me now for having two autistic kids that hate change.

I mean, most people are agreeing that it's annoying.

But dogs bark and this is a dog-friendly beach. I appreciate OP is only there visiting friends but I do think it's a bit odd to go somewhere dog-friendly and complain about dogs.

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 15:22

OP, why are you mums netting on the beach?

Couldn’t get into the book I’m reading. I’m 38 weeks pregnant and lounging like a beached whale whilst husband and friends play with the children by the water so MN it is! Not that I really need to explain that…

@coffeecupsandfairylights

but, and I mean this re your dog friendly pub thing too, I’m not complaining that there are dogs there. I also love to see dogs frolicking in the sea. I don’t mind a bit of barking, I don’t mind them pooing on beach when it’s picked up and I think they are sweet on the beach. But in the pub or on the beach them being allowed there still surely means them behaving? Same with child friendly places! I like seeing children having fun at Pizza Express but it’s not that fun when little Jimmy is running around the tables knocking shit over and screaming whilst the parents ignore 😃

@thetemptationofchocolate

the chippy is, devastatingly, closed! So no idea what sort of murder the seagulls are planning

There are way more beaches where dogs are banned from 30th April - 30th September. Go to one of those.

Been to three in the last week - dogs on all of them!!

BungleandGeorge · 08/05/2022 15:32

I guess the people saying it’s fine are the owners of annoying badly behaved yapping dogs!

CruCru · 08/05/2022 15:40

I think there’s a world of difference between a bit of excitable barking every now and then for 45 mins and continuous, relentless barking that doesn’t stop for 45 mins. The second is used as a torture device (for a reason) on that show about people pretending to try out for the SAS.

Trixiefirecracker · 08/05/2022 15:49

XenoBitch · 08/05/2022 13:17

A dog displaying its excitement by barking is not the same as a child having a tantrum.

No it way worse. My friend has a dog that barks continuously on the beach, it’s f*cking awful and just goes to prove how entitled they are about the dog. Of course she doesn’t mind it as she thinks it’s ‘cute’. The above poster is correct, if you can’t train your dog to behave, don’t have one. Simple.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 08/05/2022 15:49

We were played tapes of screaming children.

The dog barking would have been a gift in comparison.

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 16:38

@CruCru

yes! I’m talking about relentless barking!

OP posts:
Thatsnotmygame · 08/05/2022 16:40

I agree, however I’ll be taking my rescue dog to the beach and not sure how she’ll react, I will try and stop her barking but not going all the way home, just wont being her again

@MichelleScarn

the seagulls were eerily quiet

Perhaps the barking dog scared them off ...

Why is barking seen as misbehaving? It is how dogs communicate something... and at the beach it is likely to be excitement.
It is like saying children laughing is misbehaving.
