If your dog will bark at the beach don’t take them?

At the beach. Someone has brought their dog alone. It has been relentlessly barking for 30 mins+ now at the water’s edge. How is this acceptable?! I didn’t bring my own dog because he’s a total clown at the beach. I also wouldn’t let my child stand and scream for 30 mins.

is this a thing? Do people do this?! AIBU or is it a “this is how their dog has fun” thing and I should lighten up?

I wouldn’t let mine bark for that long.

I love dogs at the beach and the barking doesn’t bother me, I like seeing them play and have fun. They get very excited especially if they are puppies but the fresh air does wonders for them.

What she said. I love seeing dogs playing on the beach or going for a swim.

I'm a dog owner and my dog loves the beach. She's not a swimmer, though with a bit of encouragement will paddle. However she loves running around, digging holes and playing with a ball or Frisbee. She's not much of a barker though, except in our back yard.

Why don’t you just move a bit further along the beach?

Dogs find beaches so exciting and it’s lovely to watch! How strange to leave your dog at home because of a bit of barking….he’s missed out on so much fun! Anyway, honking geese are wonderful🙂

You could be half a mile away and still hear a barking dog!

Grumpybutfunny · 08/05/2022 13:29

Honestly I would rather listen to a dog barking than some kid screaming like I currently am in my own garden. Is the owner with the dog the only way to train them is to keep correcting the behaviour

Summerholidayorcovidagain · 08/05/2022 13:29

For the past 7 months at least I am awoken at 6am by barking 7 days a week. Sometimes up to 2 hours.. Apparently nothing the council can do. I feel your pain op. Be glad it will only be for today.

DangerouslyBored · 08/05/2022 13:31

One of my dogs loves the sound of his woof and gets very excited at the beach. If it’s the kind of beach with crashing, noisy waves, we let him get it out of his system. Quiet, calm beach where people are relaxing, no way. He is quiet and calm. Some people are just bad dog owners, and don’t care about how their hounds might be annoying others.

MissMaple82 · 08/05/2022 13:34

Oh for god sake just fuvking move to another space and stop wanting a whole beach to yourself, its public space!!!! Posts like this really grind my gears, its pathetic.

JurasicPerks · 08/05/2022 13:35

I wouldnt be overjoyed, but so long as the dog wasnt running up to me, I'd be ok with it.
Dog running barking at me is unacceptable, as is owners laughing at me when I ask them to call it back. I dont care how "friendly" it is, I don't want to be approached by strange dogs.

VorpalSword · 08/05/2022 13:35

I have a dog that barks at waves, looks very proud of himself when they retreat then barks when they come back. It’s not me - promise - I’m in my back garden.

We let him play for a few moments the walk further up the beach and repeat a few times. So he gets to enjoy himself and it doesn’t go on to long. 45minutes is a very long time for any continuous noise.

Hugasauras · 08/05/2022 13:36

I don't know, I think on a wide expanse of beach barking just becomes kind of background noise along with everything else. But where we are people don't tend to cram up in one part so there's literally miles of beach to walk along/sit on. Some dogs bark when they are excited, and I think the beach is probably one of the better places for that to happen!

FabulousKilljoys · 08/05/2022 13:36

Dogs get excited. They sometimes show this by barking. I think it's ace to see dogs enjoying themselves on the beach and honestly couldn't give a rats arse if that means a bit of noise. Life is noisy.

420Bruh · 08/05/2022 13:36

My dog is a knob at the beach, so she stays at home. Drives me mad how happy people are to inconvenience others. Yanbu

BigChesterDraws · 08/05/2022 13:39

It’s how dogs communicate! How cruel to say they should be silent at the beach. The dog is probably barking with excitement and enjoyment. What next? No children laughing at the beach? Perish the thought anyone (or any dog) should express their enjoyment of being at the beach. It’s not the same as a screaming child in a tantrum at all.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 08/05/2022 13:39

YABU. Go to one of the thousands of beaches that ban dogs in the summer if you're going to get upset by a bit of barking.

I don't disagree that the sound is annoying, but given there are so many beaches that don't allow dogs, it seems pretty stupid to go to one that does, then complain because there's a dog barking.

PinkButtercups · 08/05/2022 13:41

That would do my head in.

Our local beach between May-Sept you can't bring dogs onto a certain stretch of the beach. From the parks, splash parks, arcades down to the other park and skate park.

TeaBug · 08/05/2022 13:42

If you don’t want dogs disturbing you, go to a beach dogs can’t go on

That doesn't work. People take their dogs on regardless of rules.

OUB1974 · 08/05/2022 13:42

Continuous barking is horrendous. We have it at home and we are seriously considering moving house to get away from it as the owners won't do anything.

A good dog owner (or anyone responsible for any anti social noise) would try to stop it yadnbu. Hope your day improves!

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:44

@coffeecupsandfairylights

we are only here as we are with friends who have a beach hut here! Had no idea about dog friendly/not. Also in general a bit of barking is fine. But 45 mins of barking without a break is not the same as a bit of barking!

@420Bruh ha glad it’s not just my dog 😆

I mean, it’s a public beach. I would be irritated probably, but I don’t think that’s their problem. It’s a dog friendly beach, dogs will do things on it. If you don’t want dogs disturbing you, go to a beach dogs can’t go on.

THIS. I wouldnt allow my dog to do this but on a public beach, I'm afraid you cannot have an expectation of silence. This is part and parcel of being out with the public in popular areas. If you want somewhere very peaceful, go to a remote spot that not many people go!

I am taking my dog to the beach for a little break in a few weeks. I love seeing the penny drop when she gets the sand in her paws and realises where she is. She then bombs about like a mad ass. She is nearly 12, and it is so lovely seeing her turn into a puppy again for a while.

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:46

Dog has stopped barking now anyway but it isn’t something I would let me dog do for a prolonged period. Of course they bark - our dog also chases foxes in the garden and barks but obviously we have neighbours so we call him in if he’s barking so it’s not pissing them off. I thought stuff like this was just considerate

MichelleScarn · 08/05/2022 13:46

Were there any seagulls on the beach? Now they are noisy buggers!

Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:46

Only on MN is not wanting to listen to a dog bark every 5-10 seconds for 45 mins “an expectation of silence” 😃

OP posts:
Giraffesandbottoms · 08/05/2022 13:47

@MichelleScarn

the seagulls were eerily quiet

We've just been saying the same OP, I've had to come in from the garden and shut the windows because of the dogs on the beach below our place who haven't stopped barking since their owners arrived at lunchtime. The din is horrendous. DS is trying to study and is threatening to go down there to have a word (he won't though). Dogs are supposed to be on a lead on that beach as well, but they're not of course. YANBU.
