Maybe you will understand a little better if I tell you a story.

I am a reporter. I will admit it, I used to write for a certain tabloid. One day I was asked to get a road rage story for the paper which I duly did. But when my editor saw the photo of the victim, he was appalled. “We can’t use her,” he said, “she’s black. Our readers don’t like black people.”

So I had to find a new, white, victim. Which I did. She also had to be size 10 and preferably blonde.

This is how I learnt how ingrained racism is in the UK.

Any child missing for a few minutes every parent in the world can relate to the terror that you feel losing them for even a few seconds. So thankful they are home and safe

@BlueberryPuff can you investigate Charlene Downes? Poor White people, foreign, black etc don't get the same treatment as the Rich white families. No one doesn't want to find Madeline McCann but you can't say any other missing child has had the same effort that they have had, wheve every missing child should have the same chance. But they haven't

i work in the press and absolutely agree there is racial bias around reporting missing children. This was widely reported though and pretty quickly, probably because the twins angle made it more interesting/ newsworthy.

You know when people accuse others of 'making it political' and 'point scoring' whenever something happens to POC? That is literally white privilege. POC don't have the luxury of things that happens to us not being political. Our lives and deaths are politicised already. Do some reading.

i was on the news. Two separate channels at two different times.

White privilege as a term needs scrapping.

They're small kids and I'm pleased they've been found.

It's pretty obvious why.

The point was simply about the time of sunset. I doubt anything could have happened before darkness fell.

Even if all media had uploaded it instantly, the police did not put it out until 9ish (and then the extremely welcome one confirming they had been found at just after midnight)

So pleased they're safe 💕

Poor kids - what kind of muppet allows 6-year-olds to play outside by the street unsupervised? Hopefully this will be a wake-up call to them and other parents who don't always think things through.

Different subject but you do all know that in all of human history we’re the very very far outliers not letting 6 year olds play unattended. Even today 6 year olds travel unattended to school in other countries- ‘civilised’ 🙄countries too.

There are good reasons we supervise our children, mainly traffic, but not knowing where a 6 year old is isn’t like not feeding or hitting them.

No it doesn't. White privilege is real, the same as rich privilege and male privilege.

For those of you bringing racism into the mix, I do have some experience of this issue.
Many years ago, my then sister in law was in a bitter custody dispute with her ex. Her DS lived with her ex and she wanted him back. She had mental health issues and had been sectioned a couple of times. One day, she went to where her ds was at school and took him out of the playground. She drove to a seaside town and stayed there with him for 3 days. The police were involved, the press knew about it but because of the mental health concerns no press release was made.
whether there is information in the press has more to do with the circumstances than anything else. A child being taken by a complete stranger would hit the headlines straight away. A child being taken by a parent would be more likely to not hit the headlines. People claiming it’s purely down to the colour / race of the child are idiots.
