Yes I know she's interviewing Boris but for fuck's sake, let him get a word in edgeways, even worse when Adil Ray is on as well.

She's so rude

neither he nor his party has an answer to the cost of living crisis

Because other parties do?🙄

It's the job of the Opposition to hold the Govt account, not to come up for policies for them. But, actually, Labour has been pushing the windfall tax on energy companies to ease the cost of bills but the Tories won't implement it because they prefer to support big business profits over the public's needs.

Band F is property valued £120,001 to £160,000, which in my home town would mean a one flat. So no, it doesn't indicate a ver large property at all.

I think that valuation is based on 1991 market value so her house will be worth more now, she could potentially downsize. That’s very daunting for an older person though.

However, there are many people that are struggling with no option to downsize, they’ve cut back on everything possible and they can’t afford to live.

PuntasticUsername · 03/05/2022 13:28

Elsie is down to one meal a day. How the fuck does anyone think she can afford to move house? It's more than 'daunting', it's totally unachievable without external help 🙄

HarrietPierce · 03/05/2022 13:30

Susannah Reid was remarkably constrained when confronting the lying charlatan that is our Prime Minister.

Yes this is true, practically anyone without any savings is not going to find it easy to move. But more to the point - WTF is going on when a pensioner is eating only one meal per day - how is it OK for us to be in this situation, to be discussing this.

The other properties will also be worth more. She might live in an area where all property is expensive and by the time she has paid agents, solicitors, moving expenses there might be very little left. That's if she is well enough to do the move.

PuntasticUsername · 03/05/2022 13:37

My feelings exactly @carefullycourageous ! How the fuck is this a discussion, in the UK, in 2022!

burnoutbabe · 03/05/2022 13:39

Well Elsie appears real as just shown on itv news but her flat definitely does not look band f.

Bretonbear · 03/05/2022 13:41

She interrupted him only to stop him going off on one of his 'vaccines' tangents and to stop him telling us all we need to move on. And I'm glad she did. He is a lying corrupt idiot of a man.

Unsure33 · 03/05/2022 13:42

I don’t think anyone is telling Elsie to move . And the comment about the bus pass was not him saying she should use the pass to travel around . He did not mean that .

the worldwide situation with fuel costs is dire and part of what he said is true , reinvestment and profits produce tax for the government to spend and jobs - so no answer is black and white .

my question is would people be willing to go back to means testing to get help ?

IamnotSethRogan · 03/05/2022 13:44

It looked to me like she just cut him off when he was avoiding the question and talking nonsense

Unsure33 · 03/05/2022 13:44

@Bretonbear

i repeat no one minds tough questions but she spoke over him several times and did not take opportunity to query his answers more and her disdain for him was obvious. Not professional at all.

I think Susanna said Elsie lives in a council house so it’s not hers to sell. If she moved to a smaller council property, she could potentially save money on council tax and her energy bill. I wasn’t suggesting she moves at almost 80 though, as
someone else mentioned, there are other issues with that.

I was just responding to a poster that said her house was only worth 120-160k, that’s incorrect. I think Elsie was not the best case to use as people were always going to pick up on her living in a house that is band f and say she’s not doing so bad 🙄 Shes living on one meal a day and can’t afford heating, that’s dreadful. But people will say, ‘just’ move. At her age, that’s very difficult. There would have been many other cases that Susanna could have used where people couldn’t have responded ‘oh, band f, big house, just move’ . I don’t think it’s that realistic for Elsie to move, certainly not easily, but there are definitely others that don’t even have that option. They live in the cheapest housing already, barely eat and can’t afford heating. Boris should be ashamed.

What do you mean 'go back'? We still have means testing for many forms of support, and means testing has been expanded by Conservatives such as limiting child benefit which used to be universal.

What I want is a fairer tax and welfare system.

Well Elsie appears real as just shown on itv news but her flat definitely does not look band f.

It’s in London. I imagine there’s a very high proportion of properties in higher bands there. It would have needed to be valued at £120-160k in 1990. The average London property in that year was £80k.

LoveInSlowMotion · 03/05/2022 13:49

Boris was listening about an elderly woman in a dreadful situation, not eating properly and travelling on buses all day to save heating. The fact he used that opportunity to tell us how great he was introducing the bus passes in the first place, really does show what sort of man he is.

VioletCharlotte · 03/05/2022 13:56

I watched the interview and I didn't think Susannah was rude at all. She was attempting to push Johnson to answer the question he was asked, rather than the one he would have preferred to be asked.

I thought the Elsie example was a bad one though. Besides the band F thing, I'm sure she said that Elsie's energy bill had increased from £17 to £80 a month. Did I hear that correctly? Because if so I'm then it sounds like Elise has been underpaying so it therefore paying off debt, as well as seeing an increase in price.

The other examples she used were much better and I would be interested to hear more about what they're 'looking at' for households who have high energy usage due to medical equipment.

Kidsfuturematters · 03/05/2022 14:01

I thought she was right to press him. I think he is is bringing this country to its knees (economically, politically and morally) and we need to show him the door starting with this Thursday. I want my kids to grow up in a decent country.

skodadoda · 03/05/2022 14:02

SweetMeadow · 03/05/2022 09:45

Perhaps she did him a favour by talking lots?

His response to the example of 77 year old Elsie, using her free bus pass to stay warm on the buses instead of being at home because she can’t afford to heat it, was to say proudly that he was responsible for introducing that free bus pass… It just shows how out of touch he really is.

And that is precisely why interviewers jump in when they hear their interviewees deflecting.

Bretonbear · 03/05/2022 14:02

SueSaid · 03/05/2022 12:06

She just seemed so amateurish and out of her depth, constantly interrupting someone isnt a very good interviewing skill. Then they wonder why people won't go on their show.

She did well not to tell him to stop lying and shut the fuck up.

hamstersarse · 03/05/2022 14:03

I've only seen a clip but I do know I couldn't have watched much more

These 'gotcha' interviews are all about the journalist getting a scoop / high profile for themselves rather than giving us, the public, any meaningful insight into what politicians are doing

It's just representative of the state of journalism right now. No wonder most people don't trust the news anymore. It's nothing to do with actual news anymore

hamstersarse · 03/05/2022 14:04

Anyway, she got her scoop.

Job done

That’s what so many politicians do.

Rory1234 · 03/05/2022 14:04

He doesn’t answer the questions which is why she interrupts. He’s trying to distract and derail.

Well Elsie appears real as just shown on itv news but her flat definitely does not look band f.

If Elsie's flat is in somewhere like St John's Wood it could easily be in Band F. This looks like a council block where many are now privately owned. 3 bedroom flat (38 Sherringham) sold for £187K back in 1995, so could easily have been worth £120k plus back in 1990
