Looking for some inspiration - what is a good/healthy habit you started and noticed and improvement in how you felt from it?

Marking place. I'm about to start hrt and hoping I'll be adding it as a good habit!

@Youdoyoutoday thanks!

Strength training has changed my body shape in ways I never thought possible. Logging my calorie on fitness Pal and eating more protein has changed my diet for the better, and it's a long term sustainable change.

How did you know what to do regarding strength training?

I see more and more people ditching hiit and running for weights but I just wouldn't know where to start.

ViscountessBridgerton · 17/07/2022 09:03

@WFHinWinter I have a weekly session with a PT. Not cheap but worth every penny!

You may like a Bodypump class, I am more motivated to work in a class setting, and you wil learn some basic techniques.

Do you then do the training independently of the PT?
If so, how many gym sessions per week do you try do?

ViscountessBridgerton · 17/07/2022 09:23

@Frolicinameadow I try to do at least one other session per week. Just at home with my weights, don't go near a gym. PT sessions are remote as well via video call. I also go swimming and running but have been doing that for years.

3luckystars · 17/07/2022 09:37

Great thread.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 17/07/2022 09:45

I have a virtual weight training PT as well (although she does do in person masterclasses too which are brilliant).

We have a weekly check in, a monthly zoom, she sets me a weekly programme in an app with a mix of home and gym-based workouts. There are videos of every move and I can send her videos to check my form. There’s a Facebook group for us to all support each other.

It’s brilliant. I’m 4 months in and feeling amazing.

Have a look at Lorraine pascale on instagram. I find her very inspiring. She’s posted videos about her workouts recently. One was about weights. Start really low, 1kg each arm or even 500g. Build up over time.

Having a glass of wine each evening. It's really relaxing and I enjoy it. Always follow it up with 2 glasses of water....
Also Tai Chi. I hated the 1st 2 classes as always loved fast walking and it's SO slow. But Long Covid means I can't walk far and I can't walk fast. Now I absolutely love Tai Chi and the chap who runs it explains everything and also makes us laugh.

One that I don't thinks been mentioned on here. Get some daylight in the morning. Ideally 30 mins first thing. Amazing for sleep & mood.
I've learnt so many health habits from The Huberman Podcast( Harvard Neuroscientist)

I would like to know more about this

Being kind. It’s free and gives great rewards.

Taking that extra moment to help someone with their shop into their car, carrying groceries, running a quick errand for my elderly neighbor, etc etc etc.

It helps them & makes them feel good and it does my heart good. Win-win.
Plus I like my kind self.

What a lovely idea

Walking- I try to do at least 15,000 steps a day. I started a year ago and was almost sedentary. I've lost weight, I'm loads fitter, it really boosts my mood and gives me the space to be on my own and have some thinking time.

I want to do this in May and see how I feel. How do you track your steps please?

CallieQ · 30/04/2023 10:01

Yoga has been great for me all round

Donna1001 · 30/04/2023 10:18

Using my Fitness Pal to log my food
Joined a gym & hired the personal trainer for a few sessions to show me the ropes. & help my confidence.
Think about portion sizes

Daisychainsandglitter · 30/04/2023 11:49

@FiddleLeaf I have a Fitbit but any smart watch should have the same facility. I used to enjoy having challenges with my friends but Fitbit have recently stopped these. I always try and do around half of these steps early in the morning. Good luck!

LoisLane66 · 30/04/2023 13:05

I never do more than a few steps a day unless I go to the shops. Then it's still only in the hundreds. I have no motivation to do more. I prefer doing jigsaws on my tablet. 😂

ExpatInSlavikLand · 30/04/2023 13:40

Light, gentle exercise 4-5 times a week; 15-20 mins on the cross trainer (we bought one for 200 EUR), in front of Netflix so I don't get bored, followed by using very light dumbbells for a few minutes and some stretching.

I feel better, am more flexible, stronger, more toned, and I'm proud of myself!

C1239 · 01/07/2023 19:19

Revisiting this post because I really want to incorporate some healthy habits into my life!

Cut out sugary stuff, cake, ice-cream. Only have 1 sugar in coffee and only 1 coffee a day, in the morning. Only eat two meals, either breakfast at 10.30 and dinner at 6pm or brunch at 11.30 and dinner at 7pm. Only 1 course no pudding

I may have almonds and walnuts during the day but only a handful and I drink water water water.
Also switch off my phone at 11 pm and back on at 9am. I'm retired so don't need to read work emails etc.

speakout · 02/07/2023 07:50

Yoga.
I have practiced for decades, but increased my practice when the kids got older and I had more time.
I do yoga every day, including six classes a week.
I am in my 60s and I have greater strength and stamina than I did in my 20s.
I seek out intermediate/advanced yoga classes.

HollyBookBlue · 02/07/2023 08:05

Drinking more water and less alcohol

Omgea 3, vit C and vit D daily

More veg. Lunch used to be a cuppa and toast. Now it's a chic pea salad or veg soup.

No snacking

Kefir. Every morning for breakfast. Tastes just like natural yoghurt, and I have it with strawberries. My eczema has gone

Walking more. I tracked my steps on a normal day as less than 1k. Now I go for a walk every day and get more than 5k most days. Want to do more, but excuses...!

Also not beating myself up when there's an occasion where I want to eat sugary food and drink booze

I'd love to regularly do yogo or lift weights.
