Mum thinks this dress isn't right for wedding

Going to a wedding in a couple weeks. Saw a gorgeous bardot dress, loved it, fiance loved it so ordered it and I love it in real life too. However I sent a pic to my mum who just texted back "I don't like it for a wedding" then didn't say why or anymore? Am I breaking some kind of etiquette? Clueless about these things. Most weddings I've been too I've been the bridesmaid or the bride and don't have a clue how guests dressed. I do remember a wedding a few years back where I wore a red polka dot dress. Don't know if that was breaking any etiquette rules. I do believe that mother likes that dress though! I will attach a pic of the dress!

It’s awful

Tabitha888 · 25/04/2022 22:54

It really looks like a beach dress. Imagine going there and feeling underdressed. Best tip I do, it buy second hand dresses of eBay or boohoo. There cheap. And then I sell them on as I know I won't wear the again. Cost just a fraction of an occasion dress. Have a look at web pages like next, phase eight and Hobbs for inspiration. Then find your vibes and go for 2nd hand options. No one needs to know. I got a Jenny packham one for £20 on eBay and resold it for a tenner! Wedding guest dressing doesn't have to be expensive. Btw that dress is so cute, but defo a summer dress xx

Nogreenfingers83 · 25/04/2022 22:54

What sort of wedding is it? A traditional-ish type day held at a hotel, or wedding venue type thing? Or a beach?

If it's the former then this is way too informal. The fabric, the cut, the style and the length.

Palavah · 25/04/2022 22:54

There are plenty of outfits that can be 'you' and still appropriate and which you can get wear out of again. Surely this isn't the only option.

Bobthescammer · 25/04/2022 22:55

I personally wouldn’t wear it to a wedding.

I personally wouldn’t care if you wore that to my wedding.

Emilizz34 · 25/04/2022 22:56

It’s very shapeless and looks like something you would wear to cover up at pool/ beach

Lovemypeaceandquiet · 25/04/2022 22:57

You should wear something “you” but in a more elegant version. There’s plenty of dresses that are not floor length gowns but also not a BBQ/Pub garden mini sun dress.

This is a dress I bought couple of years ago for a summer wedding, paired with silver heeled sandals it was “me” but also bit more formal.

Very beachy. If the weddings in a barn and their are hay bales to sit on you'll be picking straw out of your knickers all day and be really itchy. Actually any chair you sit in will leave marks on your legs as it's so short!

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/04/2022 22:58

Excuse my spelling!

Sciurus83 · 25/04/2022 22:59

Oh nooooooo, not for a wedding. Get on Ebay or Vinted

KilmordenCastle · 25/04/2022 23:00

It's too short and way too casual for a wedding, sorry.

buzzwoodyandjessie · 25/04/2022 23:00

confusedmummy123 · 25/04/2022 22:45

It's not a church wedding. I like that someone commented that I should wear something that's more "me" . If I bought something specifically like what I'm supposed to wear I wouldn't wear it again.

Buy something second hand? Try Vinted/eBay then just sell it on again? No money lost or wasted on buying something more formal

Greybutterfly · 25/04/2022 23:02

Sorry but you can’t wear that. Beach yes. BBQ or beer garden. Wedding absolutely no.

AnastasiaRomanov · 25/04/2022 23:03

I can’t believe you thought that was suitable for a wedding. It looks like a beach cover up as someone said.

Penguinsaregreat · 25/04/2022 23:03

I agree it looks like a beach dress.

veronicagoldberg · 25/04/2022 23:04

Good heavens, no.

JedEye · 25/04/2022 23:05

Looks like a pretty beach dress.

Shiningstarr · 25/04/2022 23:05

Absolutely not, it looks like something you wear to the beach.

MurmuratingStarling · 25/04/2022 23:11

@confusedmummy123 Are you serious? It's hideous! I can't imagine any 'occasion' where I would wear this. It's basically a beach outfit!

Something like this OP, lovely , young and wedding appropriate

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 25/04/2022 23:14

Cute dress for something casual but you should really aim for a bit more classy and elegant for someone’s wedding. Unless it’s on a beach!

RosesAndHellebores · 25/04/2022 23:14

It's a beach cover up for a table in a Greek Taverna circa 1980s.

It is gobsmackingly inappropriate op.

hulahooper2 · 25/04/2022 23:14

I think it’s far too casual for a wedding , it looks like a beach dress

Phobiaphobic · 25/04/2022 23:15

It's a no from me too.

Oneortwo2022 · 25/04/2022 23:16

It depends entirely on the type of wedding you’re going to. If it’s a posh, formal sort of venue then I think you will look a big underdressed. It is a more casual and relaxed wedding you can definitely wear this with some heels and fun earrings.
