AIBU to want to know the truth about this?

Noah Donohoe was an intelligent, smart, kind and gentle boy. He was 14 years old, the only child of Fiona Donohoe and her everything.

On 21st June 2020, a bright sunny day and as lockdown had eased, Noah set off on his bike to meet up with his two friends to do some schoolwork together, but never reached his destination. Instead, Noah's body was found 6 days later in a storm-drain, naked, in a part of his home city he did not know.

On the day Noah was found, before Noah was formally identified, the Police did a media release stating that there was ‘No Foul Play’ involved. If the police are so sure that ‘No Foul Play’ was involved and that they will not be found wanting under scrutiny, why are they now trying to stop Noah’s mother and her legal team getting access to four files of information on Noah’s investigation?

The Police have applied for a ‘Public Interest Immunity’ certificate, which, if granted, means they can hide four key files in the investigation. Such a certificate is only used in exceptional circumstances and rarely used in the case of a missing child. This certificate has been brought into play in cases where Police intelligence, informers or paramilitaries are involved.

Noah’s mummy has, from the very start of Noah being missing, believed that the police did not use all their resources in finding Noah. This was confirmed when it emerged they had not paid anyone overtime while investigating his death. They did little, if any, forensics and any suspects that were brought to their attention were dismissed as not relevant.

Noah's mummy believes that someone harmed Noah and that there have been serious and repeated failings in the Police investigation of his death. She will never get to the truth and Justice for Noah if she does not get all the information. These four files are vital to get the truth she desperately needs, to find out what really happened to her precious son.

This is a podcast with Noah's mother. It is a hard watch and so a trigger warning may be needed before watching:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRWsr3giWH8

After watching the podcast and the more I get to know, the more questions and doubts I have, and the more difficult it is to believe the police claim of 'No Foul Play'. Noah's death is being treated as a coroner's investigation and the police are not actively pursuing any person or persons in relation to it. Given the lack of a proper investigation into Noah's disappearance and death by the police and their application to keep their files secret, it is difficult to have any confidence in them. In fact, this has been described as their 'Stephen Lawrence moment'. Add to this that Noah's mother and auntie have received telephone threats, are trolled daily online and posters of Noah have been defaced - his face deliberately cut out of them. My own view is that the files must be released and a new and independent investigation begun.

As a parent, a member of the public and a long-standing Mumsnetter, I want to know the truth about what happened to Noah. Even more importantly, I want his mother Fiona to get the truth she needs to be allowed to grieve properly for her son, for Noah to get the justice he truly deserves, for all other children to be safe in the future and to place transparency and accountability where it should rightly be.

This is an earlier thread about Noah, nearly full and so about to close to new posts, but with useful links to newspaper articles and also to a petition in support of his mother:

Petition signed and shared. This is awful, I hope this mum gets answers.

Thank you Flowers

We're not giving up. Even though the thread still isn't in Active thanks to MNHQ and their 'algorithms'.

I quote Mumsnet:
'Active

This is blatantly not true.

Even after 21 posts we're not in the Active long list of 200 threads.

It's pretty disgraceful really, preventing more Mumsnetters from getting to hear about Noah.

This is truly a deeply sad and worrying story. If our police cannot protect nor find justice for children, what is their purpose and how do they live with themselves?

Forgive me, I don't usually swear, but...

Finally, after 23 posts, we're in fecking Active.

I've still to catch up on some of the thread, but could it be that the files contain sensitive info which couldn't be redacted like some people have suggested it could be.

For example, they might be investigating whether it was a hate crime of some kind. Any reference to this could automatically result in the community Noah was from assuming it was a rival community, but if you redact the words 'hate crime' then it potentially wouldn't make any sense - "this document investigates the possibility of whether Noah's murder was the result of an xxxx."

MNettersForNoahAndFiona · 12/05/2022 12:48

The first thing to say is that this isn't about 'rival communities' at all. There is a majority of good people and a minority of bad people everywhere. The good people of all communities were and are united in wanting justice for Noah and the truth for his mummy Fiona.

The second thing to say is that it would be a huge relief to Fiona and to all good people everywhere to see evidence that the police (PSNI) had investigated everything, and indeed anything, as they should have done, and that includes a hate crime on the grounds of both race and religion.

What is causing tension for all decent people is the likelihood, based on what we do already know and based on the past behaviour of the police (PSNI) and their use of PII (Public Interest Immunity) certificates, is that in Noah's case this is potentially being used to protect police incompetence - some deliberate, corruption and racism, and to protect the guilty including police informers and paramilitaries.

I will attach one page, already given to Fiona by the police (PSNI) to see if anyone would find this acceptable in the disappearance and death of a child?

This concerns the death of a child. You can't get more 'sensitive' than that. There has to be transparency. Justice needs to be done and seen to be done. For the last nearly 2 years, there has been little or no confidence that the police (PSNI) including the Chief Constable Simon Byrne and Superintendent Muir Clark, the coroner Joe McCrisken, the justice minister Naomi Long and the secretary of state Brandon Lewis intend to deliver that.

This was created for Noah by Barry McGowan. The police, coroner and others should take note. 💙

CatChant · 12/05/2022 17:38

It is a worrying and deeply distressing story. I do not see how anyone could expect Fiona to accept the PSNI’s preferred version of events when there are so many gaping holes in it.

CatChant · 12/05/2022 17:39

I wouldn’t if I were in her place.

CatChant · 12/05/2022 17:41

All she has been asking for all this time is to be told the whole truth about what happened to her beloved child.

CatChant · 12/05/2022 17:48

It is the least a parent of a child who has suffered an untimely death should be able to expect.

CatChant · 12/05/2022 17:52

But almost two years on Fiona is no closer to knowing what happened than on that horrible day when her beautiful boy’s body was found lifeless.

CatChant · 12/05/2022 17:57

The PSNI should be helping Fiona, not seeking to conceal information from her.

CatChant · 12/05/2022 18:05

Do any of its officers remember they were appointed to serve and protect the public?

CatChant · 12/05/2022 18:07

And if they do, do they feel they have done all that could be asked of them to find out what happened to Noah?

CatChant · 12/05/2022 18:10

If it was their beautiful child dead in a filthy underground drain would they feel all has been done that can be done?
