Best British crime dramas

What is yours? And yes I know it's not an AIBU but posting for traffic is a crime I like committing.
Personally, I can't decide. Happy Valley was bloody brilliant and I loved Broadchurch, Shetland. I also love the more lighthearted Father Brown, Grantchester and Jonathan Creek. Scott and Bailey was binge watched with great joy.

Can you pick a favourite? Just one?

I like Vera too. They’re always good, solid stories and I love how they use beautiful Northumberland so well.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 24/04/2022 00:39

Whitechapel
Sherlock
Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes - although I was massively disappointed by how they ended that. So stupid and unimaginative.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 24/04/2022 00:40

Oh. Just one? Whitechapel definitely.

MissConductUS · 24/04/2022 00:42

I'm an American who adores British crime dramas, so I really appreciate the suggestions here.

My all time, hands down favorite is Foyle's War.

hummf · 24/04/2022 01:38

Strike and Unforgotten are my favourites I’ve watched most recently

It’s not fair, choosing one .

I’d have to choose between Poirot and Miss Marple, and I just can’t . May have shed a tear at the end of ‘Curtain’ though .

Yes - "Curtain" is wonderful - and I still watch it over and over. I have so many questions about what happens next - and there is no next. Or why Judith (Hastings' daughter) is the way she is. Or do Hastings and Elizabeth Cole get together afterwards... I'm possibly a bit over-invested! 🌹

Criminal

on Netflix is very good. First one has David Tennant.

AlternativelyWired · 24/04/2022 09:27

How could I forget Strike?? I'm reading the books and he is my ultimate crush 🥰 I had quite the girl crush on Olivia Coleman in Broadchurch too. I can't see Lewis in the same light now that Fox has shown his twat side in public.

Last week watched the 2 series of Case Histories on Britbox. I like it because Kate Atkinson, author of the Jackson Brodie books, is one of my favourite writers. I'm not going to watch Life after Life though, just started on BBC2, reviews say its very sad. Can cope with a bit of ketchup but hands off my tender emotions.

newnamethanks · 24/04/2022 10:11

And bugger Lawrence Fox. He's stolen my enjoyment of Lewis by publicising his stunning and loutish ignorance. As Dennis Thatcher famously said, when asked why he didn't make public comments, 'Better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and confirm it'.

Love Sherlock, Endeavour and Happy Valley.

Has anyone watched Murder in Provence on britbox? I'm considering signing up for the free trial to watch it.

AlternativelyWired · 24/04/2022 10:26

I've just watched murder in Provence and loved it. There's only 3 episodes and I hope they make more.

I love Vera she is just as I imagine her from the books.
I can't watch Shetland though as it is so changed from the books the characters are all wrong

fishingforflies · 24/04/2022 11:22

My favs are:

Vera
River
Unforgiven
Happy Valley
Line of Duty (although lost interest)
Luther
Sherlock

midsomermurderess · 24/04/2022 11:50

Yes, bloody Lawrence Fox. I just can’t go near Lewis anymore. I know it a bit silly, but he’s killed it for me.

MrsSebastianStan · 24/04/2022 11:58

I have a guilty pleasure for ‘Pie in the Sky’. Just loved the cooking and the fabulous female sergeant.

also love
Broadchurch
Blue Murder
Scott and Bailey
Judge John Deed

phlebasconsidered · 24/04/2022 12:21

No Offence - marvellous and underated
Rose and Maloney - early Sarah Lancashire
Whitechapel
Ripper Street

slartibartfast · 24/04/2022 12:39

Foyle's War
New Tricks
Blue Murder
Campion
Softly Softly
....

Only mentioned SS because nobody has, and I'm so old...
on a similar theme
ZCars (theme tune ripped off my school hymn - or the other way round)
Dixon of Dock Green (remember guest appearance at end of AshestoAshes)

phlebasconsidered · 24/04/2022 14:45

Rose and Maloney is on Prime. I don't think there would have been an Unforgotten without it. I would also watch anything with Phil Davies in.

Newestname002 · 24/04/2022 20:48

I'm watching Grace now (ITV). Gripping and rather scary. You might want to watch the pilot episode first (AND TV Hub I think) to get good background. 🌹

Newestname002 · 24/04/2022 20:59

Couldn't see if anyone mentioned Trigger Point?

Sorry - too invested here.. 🌹

JudgeJ · 24/04/2022 21:18

I know it's called British crime dramas but I'm going to bend the rules and mention Zen, he's played by Rufus Sewell so I'm counting it. Just watching them again, love them. Pity I can't stretch to Montelbano!

FartNRoses · 24/04/2022 21:50

I enjoyed:
Line of Duty
Liar
The Wire

FartNRoses · 24/04/2022 21:52

Sorry, scrap The Wire! Nothing British about that! (apart from Idris and Dominic 😀)

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 25/04/2022 07:47

Thought of 2 more:

you don’t know me - absolutely loved and I hope the actor wins his BAFTA.

I’m also just rewatching Top Boy (summerhouse and the new one). Really phenomenal.
