How much do you spend on your weekly shop?

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 20/04/2022 20:44

I am just wondering if what I spend a week on my shop is average?

£160/£200 per week for food, drinks, alcohol, dog treats and usual house stuff like cleaning products and toiletries for 2 adults and 1 child.

I shop at Tesco and don't do top up shops etc.

The reason why I am asking is, my friend thinks this is a really high amount. But they shop in different shops eg Asda/Aldi plus do top up shops. So when I pointed out she must be spending more than me, adding in petrol etc to get to different shops, plus more time going to different places. She was adamant she wasn't. I get home delivery.

Thanks very much wise ones

@Iateallthechocolate thanks for that, it was an interesting read. I did try to reduce my weekly shop at the start of this year. I reduced it to £80 but couldn't manage it. I think I got a £80 shop one week but it didn't last the week.

I am going to analyse my past orders and see where I could cut back/reduce.

Honestly, I don’t see how anyone can feed a family of 6 for £50 a week. And it’s rather disingenuous to claim it can be done but not include all the costs or have minuscule portions of some ingredients. Even if 3 DC have FSM that still leaves 3 people needing lunches during the week and DC still need lunch on weekends - that’s 27 lunches a week you need to buy.

2 packs of apples and 1 bunch of bananas is not enough fruit for a family of 6 for a week. That’s not even one portion per day per DC. A 1kg pack of onions does not do 6 people 6 meals, that’s not even 30g per portion, especially when there’s little other vegetables in the meal e.g. only tomatoes in the bolognese.

Wanting 30g of cheese (which is the ‘official’ amount of a portion) per portion is not a lot, but one 400g pack of cheese does not even give you that, per person for 3 meals a week. And actually it is 4 meals a week - 2 mince, carbonara and fajitas, so not even 17g per portion.

I have said that I buy my cleaning stuff and toiletries elsewhere. But even if I did buy them in Lidl or sainsbury's it's not feeding my kids.

I dont see why 3 lots of 500g mince for 12 servings is shocking as some people dont eat meat at all. Two onions 1.5kg of mince 4 tins of tomatoes and 4 tubs of passata fill a wok to the brim. Serve with cheapy 20p pasta it's a hell of a lot of food. I would challenge anyone to sit and eat that much in 6 servings.

I'm not saying everyone should eat like that but it can be done. Some weeks I only spend £50. Not because I have too or I choose to it's just that making bulk meals in a wok is very easy when you have 4 kids.

The fajitas are 16 wraps. 3 peppers, 1kg of chicken thighs, two onions. A whole cumber. Again I would challenge anyone to sit and eat 500g ofchicken, 2.5 peppers, 100g of cheese and half a cucumber in 8 wraps.

I could easily spend £200 on things like Kiev's, pies and steak but I can not be arsed to cook things like that most evenings.

If it costs under £6 to make a wok full up of bolonase then it just costs that much.

I'm not selling it as a lifestyle choice. I only go to Costco once every two months. Not every week is £50 I'm just saying it can be done and that's how. I'm not saying i could live on £50 52 weeks of the year. i just saying i can do it. I eat a lot of pasta. It's very cheap pasta!

Pinktruffle · 21/04/2022 16:31

We are a household of 4 adults and 1 toddler, I spend about £80 a week from Asda - it's usually higher if I shop from Tesco or Sainsbury, and a bit lower if its Aldi. Only DH drinks alcohol and he rarely has it and we are a mostly vegetarian household. DH buys fish occasionally.

AnxiousSquirrel · 21/04/2022 16:39

We don't do weekly shops but once a month big shops, all the cupboard stuff, fridge freezer, cleaning products, toiletries and kids stuff + treats, around £120 and we do a top up shop in the middle of the month which is around £20/30, 2 adults, 2 children. What you're spending a week is insane!

zseago · 21/04/2022 16:51

I never understand these threads. You only are spending too much, OP, if you can't afford it?

we spend about £300+ a week, no pets, no chickens, that does include some cleaning supplies. 4 adults. Booze separate and some hygiene separate (shampoo, shaving products, etc)

zseago · 21/04/2022 16:57

The fajitas are 16 wraps. 3 peppers, 1kg of chicken thighs, two onions.

What about spices? Cumin, chilli powder, sweet smoked paprika, oregano, cumin. Fresh Pico de gallo with coriander, fresh limes, sour cream, guacamole. Do you serve any of that with fajitas?

margaritas?

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 21/04/2022 17:02

About £80 for three adults in Aldi.

Thats mainly fruit, veg, meat and some dairy..... We don't really snack but we do eat very well.

As it happens ive just put in an Asda order for our holiday lodge we're staying at, we're doing half eating out and half cooking. I didnt want to be slaving over an oven so all fairly easy stuff and 3 meals, a few breakfast bits and snacks but nothing very extravagant (( hummus, cheese, crackers and crisps)) came to £90. I nearly choked!!! 😳

SockFluffInTheBath · 21/04/2022 17:04

margaritas

I want to live in your house 🤣

Fandangofran · 21/04/2022 17:07

75 for 2 adults and 3 kids - I meal plan, cook from scratch and try not to waste anything

AReallyUsefulEngine · 21/04/2022 17:11

I didn’t mention toiletries in the post you quoted, so I don’t know what your first paragraph is about. Even not including them I don’t see how £50 is possible for a family of 6.

It’s not 4 tins of tomatoes and 4 passata for 6 servings though, it’s 12, because it does 2 meals for 6, but that’s still fine. What aren’t normal sized portions are 16g of cheese each (400g block split into 4 meals for 6 of you) or 26g of onion per portion (1kg divided into 6 meals for 6 people).

The fajitas are 16 wraps. 3 peppers, 1kg of chicken thighs, two onions. A whole cumber. Again I would challenge anyone to sit and eat 500g ofchicken, 2.5 peppers, 100g of cheese and half a cucumber in 8 wraps.

The shopping list you typed didn’t mention chicken thighs for the fajitas which is also why it isn’t possible for £50. You don’t need to challenge anyone to eat “500g ofchicken, 2.5 peppers, 100g of cheese and half a cucumber in 8 wraps” as that isn’t the portion for one person, is it? They actually have 16g of cheese and 26g of onion, which are small portions. Hmm

Twobigsapphires · 21/04/2022 17:12

£100- £150 per week delivery from Tesco and then another £50 at the weekend for top up shop. Includes alcohol and cleaning products/toiletries. 2 adults and 2 teens. Doesn’t include dog food or dinner money.

Bellyfat · 21/04/2022 17:13

£70-£80 per week for one adult, a tween and two cats. Rarely do any top up shops, cost of shopping is shooting up though - it used to be £60-£70

Whitewolf2 · 21/04/2022 17:17

£120-£150 from Ocado depending on how much alcohol, toiletries, cleaning products we need. 2 adults, 2 young children. We do tend to eat out once or twice a week though so that’s not every meal. If you’re not throwing away food I don’t think you’re doing anything ‘wrong’ unless it’s all highly processed meals (don’t get me wrong I do get a couple of microwave items, but not for the whole week!).

Simonjt · 21/04/2022 17:18

Two adults and one child, we spend about £70 a week and we shop at Ocado.

Lex345 · 21/04/2022 17:46

I am not advocating anyone does this regularly, but I have an emergency meal plan for 7 days that comes to £38.14 for 2 adults 3 children. It is doable. We havent needed to use it, but I have it there just in case we absolutely have to. It would be an utterly joyless existence to have to do this every week though.

bluechameleon · 21/04/2022 17:47

I spend about £70-80 a week on the Tesco shop, plus £20 on a veg box and I think about £18 on milk, cheese and yoghurts from Milk and More. I've been cutting back the Tesco shop but think it might be time to look at the Milk and More order. 2 adults and 2 children.

tomatorich112 · 21/04/2022 18:10

These threads are a bit pointless as people eat differently, some peoples idea of breakfast is porridge with water, others, croissants and fresh fruit.

I could feed us like the PP does on £50, but it would be bland, boring and lacking in nice things. I spend over £20 on fruit, strawberries, blueberries, plums, piccolo tomatoes, melon etc.. a bag of apples and pears wouldn't do here.

OP, i'm guessing you just buy nice things, steaks, a nice joint of beef, parma ham, quality cheese, posh sausages etc, it does make a huge difference to the cost of food. The tomatoes I buy are £1.50 plus, yes I could buy salad toms but they taste like water.

You could cut back easily and probably not notice a massive difference, but only you can decide what you trade down on, as only you know what's important to you.

Sceptre86 · 21/04/2022 18:12

When we were two adults two kids I could do a shop in £70 with no top ups but I do buy meat in bulk from the butchers. Now we have a 7 month old baby so it's about £100 a week.

Your is very high bit if you can afford it I see no issue.

Massive pot of fajita spice from Costco. Alas no lime and tequila 😉

So I'm using pennies for the spice. Its lasts many, many, months

I cant make a chicken do more than a roast, 1 sandwich and soup though. 😂

How much do you spend on your weekly shop?
IncessantNameChanger · 21/04/2022 18:51

Sour cream was in the price at 1.30. Guacamole only on special occasions as 1) I cant make it well 2) dont look for the fresh tubs as I forget.

If I'm feeling it I might add a pack of packet chicken flavour rice on the side. It's not quite Chiquitos. But its quick to make.

Fijitas
Wraps 2x packs @69p
Sweet peppers 95p
Sour cream £1.30?
Salsa ( the snack rite one for crisps) £1?
Onions already mentioned
Cheese already mentioned
Cucumber 86p

£10.54 ok it doesnt mention chicken but that doesnt add up to £10.54. I'm dyslexic its £5 for a kilo of chicken thighs. Its half a wok full of filling plus cucumber to add in them. Its bulked out by the peppers. It feeds 2 adults 4 kids. I really cant see why that would be teeny weeny portions if it was for 4 adults. its a lot of food. Enough food anyway. I could make it with twice the amount of chicken that's also true. But I dont want to be eating 7kilos of meat each week. That's just my preferece really

Giraffesandbottoms · 21/04/2022 19:14

I try to keep to £150.00. That includes all meals, cleaning and bath room products (but not my beauty obsession). We dont drink or smoke. We dont eat take aways and only eat out maybe 1-2 a month. We waste food alot which I have to address immediately. Its not on really.
