Do you tip Tesco delivery drivers?

It’s just dawned on me that I don’t tip the drivers who deliver my food shop. I’ve only been doing it since January but I’ve never tipped them and now I feel a bit mean not doing so! I tip everyone else - takeaway deliveries, taxis, waiters, hairdressers etc. It just never occurred to me to tip them too as I don’t with Amazon delivery drivers etc.

AIBU, should I start giving them a few pounds tip? What does everyone else do?

Na, my BIL is a delivery driver and he doesn’t get tips. He’s also on a very good wage for his age and it’s a pretty cushy job by the sounds of it.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 18/04/2022 20:10

I've never tipped delivery drivers.
To be honest, I never get the whole notion of tipping in this country. (UK)
I mean, in the USA I get it as they apparently don't pay enough and rely on customers topping up the bill. (Which I don't agree with, but anyways, that's a separate rant lol)
We have minimum wage in this country,
So why are some minimum jobs deemed more "worthy" of some tips crumbs thrown their way than others?!

Mindymomo · 18/04/2022 20:15

I tip Tesco delivery drivers for deliveries in December, they always take the money. I also tip takeaway drivers. Other delivery drivers, not usually, but I did for some really heavy gym equipment that the guy carried into my garage, as he could have left in on the doorstep, he didn’t want to take it, but I insisted.

My DH is a Tesco driver he can’t accept tips they get paid more than the shop staff because it’s classed as a skilled job because you can’t just jump into it I think i would find it odd someone tipping it’s a little bit patronising to me

EmeraldShamrock1 · 18/04/2022 20:19

I do most of the time unless they're rude or grumpy, a small amount.

I tip takeaway deliveries, taxi drivers and hairdressers.
I don't use the services regularly.
I'm not sure why I tip? possibly cultural.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 18/04/2022 20:49

I also tip takeaway drivers. Other delivery drivers, not usually,
So why takeaway drivers but not other delivery drivers?
Not being "funny", just genuinely curious!
Why is one delivery driver deemed OK for getting a tip but not the other?

DieSchottin93 · 18/04/2022 21:04

DM usually tips the Tesco delivery drivers a couple of quid, but she does have mobility issues so it is on her delivery notes for the driver to bring the shopping into the house for her, so she says it's just as a wee thank you for doing that Smile

100problems · 18/04/2022 21:11

Only on my xmas delivery.

Restfulkitty · 18/04/2022 21:13

I only recently realised my driver could see right down my top each and every time I bent down to unpack my shopping from the plastic tray he left on the floor just inside my front door. So I feel he's had his tip and I now wear a hoodie.

britneyisfree · 18/04/2022 21:30

Do you lot tip the the postman too????????

Jfc just making it harder for everyone one else

GoodJanetBadJanet · 18/04/2022 21:32

Do you lot tip the the postman too????????

Exactly... as I said, why some and not others?

WeWillLookBack · 18/04/2022 21:35

I do tip at Christmas - always have an Xmas Eve delivery. I also tip our lovely postman and the bin and recycling teams.

2bazookas · 18/04/2022 21:35

No I don't tip. I pay Tesco; they pay the delivery drivers.

Hats off to Tesco, I reckon they specially train the drivers to be so efficient, pleasant and friendly.

GeodesicDome · 18/04/2022 21:42

Of course not. Can't stand all this Lady Bountiful tipping crap.

caringcarer · 18/04/2022 21:42

No but we get same ones most weeks and have them both a tenner at Xmas.

Dreamstate · 18/04/2022 21:43

Think some people are crazy they way they tip nearly everything. Why would u tip the hair dresser you're already paying for the haircut and they set the prices.

Funny how OP your considering tipping tescos delivery guy but not amazon why is that? Both companies make huge profits..

MadisonAvenue · 18/04/2022 21:57

I don’t because I’ve already paid for delivery but then I’d heard that Tesco drivers aren’t allowed to accept tips anyway.
If we had a regular driver I’d probably give them a box of chocolates or something at Christmas but we seem to get a different one every week. They’re always friendly and pleasant though.

I don’t tip any delivery drivers, on the rare occasions that we have a takeaway we usually collect because delivery times are too long but if we do have one delivered then there’s usually a delivery charge already.

Indoorcatmum · 18/04/2022 22:00

No. That is ridiculous!!!
Soon we will be tipping anyone who does anything and the already rising cost of living will be exponentially more. Fml

MrsMurtystaxreturn · 18/04/2022 22:08

Another no. Has never entered my mind to do so.

FinnRussell · 18/04/2022 22:09

No, nor the cashier at the checkout. They bring it to my door, I unpack the crates and carry it to the kitchen. I don't tip the postie or the Amazon delivery driver either.

GameofPhones · 18/04/2022 22:34

Never entered my head to tip them. Covid rules required keeping distance, anyway.

Empressofthemundane · 18/04/2022 22:38

No, definitely not.

The grocers pay the delivery drivers a wage that assumes no tips. I am sure the delivery drivers like a sneaky tip, but it will almost certainly be against policy. The grocers would rather not complicate the relationship with their customers with the awkwardness of tipping. (I work for a major grocer, so I know.)

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 18/04/2022 22:40

No.

Supermarket drivers shouldn't be accepting tips anyway - it's against the terms of their contracts so all you well-meaning tippers could potentially get them in a lot of trouble.

You're putting them in really awkward positions by offering tips as they either have to be rude and refuse them or accept and potentially get in trouble:

Topseyt · 19/04/2022 07:29

@freshcarnation

No but I always ask delivery drivers if they need the loo
Why? That's just weird.
dontknowhow2help · 19/04/2022 07:53

We were tipping £10 during first lockdowns! Don't tip anymore. We had only just started using deliveries then and were very grateful to those "risking" working Blush nobody ever refused their tip!
