Where does your disposal income go?

What do you like to spend your fun money on?

Bags, beauty, travel, clothes, shoes, sport, home improvement or anything else?

I don't spend much on beauty but would love to have a monthly massage and nail appointment. Not fussed on brows or Botox.

I also place more value on travel after the last couple of years and intend to save more to enable a bit more travel.

Clothes, shoes and bags are bought but usually second hand.

@Imlovinglife

Why do people start threads like this?

Obviously there will be answers covering basically everything that can be bought. Plus chippy answers around "Well, I don't have any spare money"

So why can't OP just imagine a long list of things on which money can be spent rather than post a thread?

Couldn't that be applied to the majority of MN threads?

AIBU - you know you either are or you aren't otherwise you wouldn't have started the thread.

Do I need to go to A&E? - on the whole people know the answer, they are just looking for reassurance about the decision they have already made.

We like a day out with the kids and we go to the theatre a couple of times a year.

We get Fish and Chips on a Saturday and a carvery maybe once a month. Otherwise I suppose I treat myself to flowers, kids clothes they don't need and nice notebooks.

bigbluebus · 17/04/2022 08:19

The house/garden and nice food treats.

Oh i like the idea of going to the theatre. I will look into that further.
imisscashmere · 17/04/2022 08:27

Activities and toys for my son, and decorating the house.

Are you really living life that much that you need to bring negative vibes to a thread about spending on things that bring you joy?

Fabrics. But, I do make all mine and the childrens clothes with it so it balances out not having to buy any from the shops.

LaWench · 17/04/2022 08:40

Ive just bought some clothes, I generally do a big splurge every year.

Monthly bits, I've started to splash out on beauty treatments. Every month I have my roots done, bikini wax and a brow tint and wax. Every 2 months I have a lash lift.
I do my nails myself, it takes 10mins.

Other than that I don't really spend much else, I have shoes, coats and handbags. I don't read magazines, they are just pages of advertising. We rarely have takeaway's.

All the rest of our disposable income is going towards our house renovation.

rc22 · 17/04/2022 08:41

Hair, a facial every month, savings, books and occasionally I go to the theatre or the cinema.

SUPsUP · 17/04/2022 08:43

A vast chunk of our household spare money goes on kids sport. Both do several quite expensive activities and one showed a bit of promise/a lot of interest on getting more competitive so this year we’re spending a lot of entry fees to events and training, travel, petrol, accommodation, meals away, dog care when we all go, equipment for the sport… it seriously adds up but we’ve said we’ll do it this year while we can and then maybe reassess for next year.

TabithaTittlemouse · 17/04/2022 08:48

Hair, clothes (mostly second hand though), make up and cigarettes!
I do put most of it aside for savings though. I save for Christmas, holidays, car and home stuff and longer term ‘just in case’ money.

Seymour5 · 17/04/2022 08:51

I’m retired, not a great deal of disposable. I have dreadful nails, so I have them done, and I have a fairly cheap gym membership. Keeping reasonably fit is top of my anti ageing list! A few treats for the grandchildren, and the occasional coffee or lunch out.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/04/2022 08:52

DS's hobbies - swimming, horse riding, guitar.
Eating out/takeaways - we eat out once a month and get takeaway once a month.
Travel and holidays - both in the UK and abroad.
Days out with DS - zoo, science museum, Harry Potter world, cinema, etc. Usually do something every Saturday, not always pricey but sometimes is.
Coffees/cocktails with friends when DS is at his dad's.
Used to spend on tattoos but I've had all the ones I want now, I have around 30. Very expensive with a good artist.
Monthly nail appointment for acrylic nails.
Occasional pamper session - facial or spa day.
Charity donations.
Nice makeup, I like Estee Lauder, Dior and YSL.

I'm not really into clothes. I buy second hand mostly as I like the vintage look. I don't buy clothes often.

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 17/04/2022 08:53

For me it's tickets for concerts and the theatre, and often travel and accommodation where these are further from home.

I prioritise holidays, once or twice a year if possible. I buy books. We eat out maybe once a month and go for a coffee or a beer every weekend.

I would like to spend more on my home. During Covid we did some garden projects and saved enough to fit a new kitchen. However, we could only afford to do this because the travel, concerts and meals out had all stopped.

I'm not bothered about hair, beauty and clothes. If I had substantially more disposable income I would like to buy high end skin care, clothes, get regular massages etc, but it's not as important to me as my concerts and travel

DressingPafe · 17/04/2022 08:57

It used to all go on holidays, then covid hit. So I really invested in my home and garden. We’ve gone for a bit of a tropical vibe in the garden and on a sunny day it does feel lovely to be out there. It gives me a holiday feeling at home.

Although I am now starting a holiday fund with an eye to getting away in 2023. Don’t fancy being a part of the airport chaos going on currently.

I also spend small amounts on things like craft materials. I don’t spend on things like beauty/clothing. I did that when I was younger but now there are other things I enjoy more.

Parker231 · 17/04/2022 08:59

Travel - always has been. Both of our families live a flight away and now DT’s have got their first graduate jobs in different European cities, we’ll be travelling even more to see them regularly.

My disposal income goes in the bin.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/04/2022 09:01

Into the coffers of Caffè Nero!

NeedleNoodle3 · 17/04/2022 09:02

Clothes, meeting friends, spa membership, big holidays and lots of UK mini breaks, doing up the house, my hobby, eating out, private health insurance.

Courante · 17/04/2022 09:04

Savings, hair dyed at salon every 4 weeks (roots & cut every other), weekly 1 hr piano lessons, home maintenance/decoration (already done the big stuff so this is minor), food beyond the basics (eating out and nice stuff from supermarket), days out.

hattie43 · 17/04/2022 09:06

Normal stuff really ,
Savings / investments

Eating out is a biggie .

coffeeandteac · 17/04/2022 09:06

I am really happy nobody has come on to say that its actually called discretionary income. Whooo no sanctimony.

Ooooop sorry.

Food mine goes on food. Takeaways, desserts from local businesses; cheggs etc and my teenage daughter.

hattie43 · 17/04/2022 09:17

@desiringonlychild2022

Oh and I have an extremely spoilt hamster but that costs a few £ at most per month at most! Though I recently spent £90 on holiday boarding plus a Uber to get him there cos it was hailing!
My favourite mn post so far lol

Fireintheloft · 17/04/2022 09:56

Me - regular haircut/nails, gym membership, plants, odd bit of clothes and house stuff. Household - saving for holiday, meal out, kids clubs and bigger house stuff. Sounds like a lot but tend to do just a little every month.
