Should Mumsnet have it's own middle class section ?

Reading some of these threads turning nasty it's really apparent that people have such different lives there will never be common ground . Nor does there need to be but the insults are not nice.

A thread posted by someone asking a question , to some a reasonable question being jumped on by ' the poor ' as tone deaf means legitimate conversation has been drowned out .

Should Mumsnet be divided so
' middle classes 'can discuss things the poor don't relate to and likewise ' the poor ' can discuss their issues without ' tone deaf ' comments from people who aren't financially destitute ?

The other thing I don't get is why jump on a thread you don't like why not just scroll on by and join a discussion you do like . Being a hater is never going to resolve anything .

OP posts:

@LampLighter414

This thread is tone deaf OP, you should save your mental energy for thinking about the people or Ukraine and how you'll afford to keep the house warm.

I hope this gets deleted by HQ

Why on earth would it get deleted? OP hasn’t broken any rules and is allowed to post about stuff that relates to her own situation!
ZaZathecat · 17/04/2022 09:14

No. The fact that MN threads are used by people of all backgrounds and incomes is a good thing. Many people live in their own bubble, and it is good to be made aware of other peoples' circumstances.

DesidaCrick · 17/04/2022 09:16

Yes, agree with @ZaZathecat - how can empathy for others develop otherwise?

Beckstar0 · 17/04/2022 09:17

@LampLighter414

I actually thought we were on a different thread so ignore my last reply!

AchillesPoirot · 17/04/2022 09:21

I didn’t think TAATs were allowed?

flashbac · 17/04/2022 09:28

@AchillesPoirot

I didn’t think TAATs were allowed?
It's not really a TAAT. The op is asking a question that was inspired by that thread and others.
EmeraldShamrock1 · 17/04/2022 09:30

I didn’t think TAATs were allowed?
Certain threads stay put, Classism, Fattism, filthy smokers, Irish are usually fair game under most circumstances.

WelliesWithHeels · 17/04/2022 09:33

Woof. Not going to wade into the difference between ability to earn and being "classy" or being able to act or speak graciously.

Libertybear80 · 17/04/2022 11:09

It was called Netmums! It's no longer running.

AchillesPoirot · 17/04/2022 11:11

It’s still running?
CJay81 · 17/04/2022 11:20

I use mumsnet because netmums stopped being a thing but I notice on here so many people are middle class. It's almost like its funded by the tories.

I'd like a working class forum. Not a forum where people say you should be happy with beans on toast if that's all you can afford, yet the people saying that are thinking about using their hot tub less or not getting their nails done so much. People who don't understand why people are concerned about paying the bills. I know many local people who are well off but still understand but I don't see this so much on mumsnet.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 17/04/2022 11:44

You're not suppose to admit that on here. light hearted
ut I notice on here so many people are middle class. It's almost like its funded by the tories.

It's the emperor's new clothes on MN.

I am a longterm poster WC there is lots of us, lots of pps with disabilities and struggling parents.

One very intelligent pp's lives hand to mouth she has a disability.
I wouldn't have guessed reading her posts over the years.

Many highly educated pp's sharing views keep me updated on the important issues feminism, Ukraine invasion, health issues.

Telly addicts is fun.

It's a pity OP and some pp's would opt for a separate MC area when life is a mixed bag, I enjoy a variety of threads learning about different cultures and social dynamics.

Gallowayan · 17/04/2022 12:07

So that would be creating a sort of class apartheid for Mumsnet users?

Trouble is you can be whatever you want to be on here. Mumsnet tends to be snobby and competitive, and I suspect users sometimes describe a lifestyle and social status they aspire to, rather than actually have

It would be interesting to see what the selection criteria would be.

Got an Aga or Smeg cooker? Use a cafetiere ? this side of the room.

Shopped at Farm Foods recently? Other side of the room for you.

*"Can you point out to me where I downplayed poverty?"

Read your own post.

how dare they work their asses off to achieve something in life . Education is free , hard work and aspiration are free , I worked two jobs as a kid to get by but now their is a huge entitlement to think the government should step in to put right all the ills people suffer . God forbid anyone suggest people are the architects of their own futures

So, just to summarise - the OP speaks of “the poor” and then posts the above. Thus the OP believes that “the poor”s poverty is down to …… ?

chisanunian · 17/04/2022 13:52

One can be both middle class and poor at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Just the thought of wanting to be seen as 'middle class' or even to be seen as is enough to make me depressed

Just buy The Sun pp requesting 'a working class' thread. This thread is awful. Ignorant and annoying. Lifes bad enough right now without trying to stir up further division. Infantile.
