Should Mumsnet have it's own middle class section ?

Reading some of these threads turning nasty it's really apparent that people have such different lives there will never be common ground . Nor does there need to be but the insults are not nice.

A thread posted by someone asking a question , to some a reasonable question being jumped on by ' the poor ' as tone deaf means legitimate conversation has been drowned out .

Should Mumsnet be divided so
' middle classes 'can discuss things the poor don't relate to and likewise ' the poor ' can discuss their issues without ' tone deaf ' comments from people who aren't financially destitute ?

The other thing I don't get is why jump on a thread you don't like why not just scroll on by and join a discussion you do like . Being a hater is never going to resolve anything .

OP posts:

Only if you can prove your credentials - whatever they are decided to be.

grotsnags · 16/04/2022 18:58

It's impossible, if a thread said "I'm struggling on an income of 70k" half the posters would say that's outrageous & out of touch & the rest would say that's because the salary is too low.

grotsnags · 16/04/2022 18:59

Also everyone would be fighting over what's actually mc & desperately trying to prove how mc they are.

Gynaesaur · 16/04/2022 18:59

Which thread are people referring to?

DrSbaitso · 16/04/2022 19:01

What a terrific idea.

Yourgirlfriendrachel · 16/04/2022 19:01

Also your class doesn’t dictate your salary or financial position.

SharpLily · 16/04/2022 19:01

I think there shoud be a 'we are gentle ladies' type board, for all those who are horrified because their husband accidentally let off a fart in front of them and everyone piles in with 'LT disgusting B'. Never in real life have I come across people with such delicate sensibilities and it seems far more polarising than money.

Choopi · 16/04/2022 19:03

@Gynaesaur

Which thread are people referring to?
The one where a grown woman learnt that if you put a jumper on you feel warmer and don't need to turn the heat on. She also discovered that there is no need to buy more food than you actually eat. She thought that these revelations were so brilliant and 'mindful' that she had to share it with the rest of the world in case we too don't know what a jumper is.
FourTeaFallOut · 16/04/2022 19:03

@grotsnags

Also everyone would be fighting over what's actually mc & desperately trying to prove how mc they are.
And then someone would nudge a language trip wire, accidentally call their dinner tea or metion the sofa, and they'd be jettisoned out of the group
phoenixrosehere · 16/04/2022 19:03

You don’t think it’s good for middle class people to be reminded that there is life outside their own quinoa-bubble?

How is quinoa middle-class? Sainsbury’s sells it for £2.

Toottooot · 16/04/2022 19:04

Maybe new boards should be set up relating to income 0- 20k, 20-30k, 30-45k etc. To join you must be approved by providing your P60 derails. Husbands income not allowed 🙄

rahjama · 16/04/2022 19:04

@Gynaesaur

Which thread are people referring to?
"AIBU to think that the high rise in energy prices is actually a good thing"

Or something similar.

A thread where the OP says that the price rises have made her a lot more careful round the house, turning lights off, being careful with food wastage and driving walkable distances.

Posters on that thread then said they had always been doing that because they don't have the luxury of being able to waste small things etc etc.

eatentoomanygrapes · 16/04/2022 19:05

😂 I'm so glad you posted this OP as I had the exact same thought process. Think it's ridiculous that someone can't talk about how they're cutting costs after the rise in cost of living without being accused of being "tone deaf" (and then that insult being used against whoever used it as being offensive to deaf people) 🙄 😂

I read often about people buying houses with budgets of £800k and think, cor, wish I had that kind of money, but I don't for one second think they should have to hide that info from my poor delicate pauper eyes and how insensitive are they for even mentioning it.

Everyone is different and you can't be shielded from other people's financial fortunes, nor should you wish to be on a public forum.

HRTQueen · 16/04/2022 19:08

I think you will find that some are just so self righteous they will go to the other board to correct them

Maybe we could move posters to a smug board have the option to move them there if they get enough smug points they are moved along with their posts

FourTeaFallOut · 16/04/2022 19:09

You'd have to take geography into account otherwise you'd have those being shafted by housing costs getting shitty at the others sunning themselves on holiday.
Nesbo · 16/04/2022 19:10

We could totally have economy, premium economy, business and first class sections.

The people in economy could accumulate points by posting and occasionally exchange those points for the right to post in one of the higher classes, just to see what the experience is like and to stop the site from feeling too divisive.

FourTeaFallOut · 16/04/2022 19:10

Because quinoa is tasteless, joyless and doesn't fill you up, only the middle classes would find that appealing.

Gynaesaur · 16/04/2022 19:10

Thanks @Choopi and**@rahjama

Baystard · 16/04/2022 19:10

I like PPs suggestion of a smug board better. I think it's unfair on the majority of decent middle class type people to be lumped in with the OP on the other thread.

FOJN · 16/04/2022 19:10

Seriously? I didn't need to read the thread to know which one you were referring to (I've been and had a look now) but it really is tone deaf. I understand the OP is trying to find the silver lining but it's an extraordinary level of privilege if you don't know that some people are unable to cut costs because they can't afford anything but the absolute essentials now.

I do not think it is helpful to insulate ourselves from the challenging and difficult realities some people have to live with.

Porcupineintherough · 16/04/2022 19:11

Forrin muck innit. So must be middle class. Hmm

grotsnags · 16/04/2022 19:12

quinoa is disgusting, does that mean i'm not mc?

RussianSpy101 · 16/04/2022 19:14

What is the thread in question? I think I’ve missed something.

Porcupineintherough · 16/04/2022 19:15

Because quinoa is tasteless, joyless and doesn't fill you up

And rice? You could say the same, is that middle class too? And how can something that's basically carbs and protein not fill you up? As for tasteless, its the venue not the occasion.

grotsnags · 16/04/2022 19:15

I do not think it is helpful to insulate ourselves from the challenging and difficult realities some people have to live with.

Likewise I think it's important to realise there are an awful lot of people who live in a complete bubble, surrounded by privilege who genuinely don't realise it wasn't just hard work that got them "there" & believe the poor are feckless & make bad choices.
