Having a light hearted discussion about this afternoons BBQ. 18 family members coming

YANBU My world - over the period of the afternoon, we cook the food on the BBq, it doesn't really matter who takes a turn to help cook as long as someone is there. We cook say burgers and when they are ready, people come and get one or not, then say belly pork or sausages or a mixture of different things. We graze over the afternoon.

YABU His world - all food is cooked, put in the hostess trolley (it was his mums) then we all eat together.

So cast your vote

YANBU!!! He's bonkers

OwlinaTree · 15/04/2022 11:15

I would do the grazing all afternoon way, not the hostess trolley. But I like the idea of owing a hostess trolley!

nearlyspringyay · 15/04/2022 11:15

You're both BU.

For that many people I would always do a big joint of something instead of faffing for hours over burgers and sausages- brisket, leg of lamb, beer can chickens etc. Can be eaten hot or cold for any latecomers and no one slaving over the bbq for hours.

Bbq burgers from a hostess trolley do sound particularly grim through.

Ohmych · 15/04/2022 11:16

Definitely your way. I think it would be really strange having food served from a hostess trolley at a BBQ.

RedPanda901 · 15/04/2022 11:17

Cook and eat as it's ready unless you have a double grill! Use the hostess trolley for help yourself g&ts!

mumda · 15/04/2022 11:23

I was invited to a BBQ once. Lovely. Turned up in my sitting outside clothes. Food all cooked and then the other women all went in the house to put really posh clothes on and we all sat down to dinner round a lovely dining table with more silverware than I've ever seen.

thismotherhoodthing · 15/04/2022 11:25

If I went to a BBQ and someone brought out a hostess trolley I'd question it big time. Very odd! Definitely your option

WeDontShutUpAboutBruno · 15/04/2022 11:25

I'm in your world. I would make use of the hostess trolly though, not sure how but I like the idea of wheeling one about 🤣

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/04/2022 11:27

Hostess trolley in the garden? In the garden! Shock

Or is the BBQ in the dining room?

Hawkins001 · 15/04/2022 11:27

The hostess trolley is efficient in that the food is all ready, but I do like to see the food cooking on the bbq.

MrMrsJones · 15/04/2022 11:27

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm winning, as I knew I would...

Graze all day
Your husband is sooooooooo wrong, tell him off from me Grin

Hawkins001 · 15/04/2022 11:29

Plus with cooking on the go, it gives people time to decide when they want x foods

Hawkins001 · 15/04/2022 11:29

Could be on decking boards or section in the garden
AdviceOnLife · 15/04/2022 11:32

YANBU. The lovely thing about a bbq is it relaxed and you can eat at your own pace. There is no pressure to formally eat together.

AlternativePerspective · 15/04/2022 11:33

Yanbu. I cook meat a bit at a time, that way there’s no waste if people have had enough.

If you cook it all then a lot of cooked meat gets thrown out whereas the uncooked meat can go back in the fridge. Plus BBQ’s are meant to be casual. It’s a bbq not a soiree.

ChampagneLassie · 15/04/2022 11:34

I had the chance to inherit a hostess trolley recently... but assumed it would probably only get used twice a year. Didn't consider BBQs! 😂

MrMrsJones · 15/04/2022 11:36

I fucking love you lot ❤️

He is admitting defeat and thanks you all for advice and changing his life 🤣🤣

Oh my god definitely your way!! Salads, nibbles, drinks available throughout.

Nnique · 15/04/2022 11:37

Ahaha he gets many points for deferring to the wisdom of Mumsnet!

MrMrsJones · 15/04/2022 11:37

We have a smallish garden and a large dinning room with bifold doors which open up fully, so sort of outside and inside.

And it a small heat hostess trolley thing, I hate it but was his mum's 🙄

Hostess trolleys are a 70s affectation and just grim.

Zilla1 · 15/04/2022 11:38

Did he watch a tv programme about BBQs before most people had done one in the UK in the 1960s or 70s sponsored by Hostess Trolley Inc then lived in a fallout shelter for 50 years, only to emerge and tell everyone they are doing things wrong?

Does he have firm opinions about other everyday activities that are amusingly distant from most people's reality?

Nnique · 15/04/2022 11:40

Oh no, hostess trolleys are a great idea! I want one for Christmas this year (fingers crossed if I can find a nice one).

But not for a barbecue.

ExcaliburBaby · 15/04/2022 11:46

His way is extremely weird!
