Having a light hearted discussion about this afternoons BBQ. 18 family members coming

YANBU My world - over the period of the afternoon, we cook the food on the BBq, it doesn't really matter who takes a turn to help cook as long as someone is there. We cook say burgers and when they are ready, people come and get one or not, then say belly pork or sausages or a mixture of different things. We graze over the afternoon.

YABU His world - all food is cooked, put in the hostess trolley (it was his mums) then we all eat together.

So cast your vote

If I arrived at a barbie and a hostess trolley was trundled out, I'd think I'd walked onto the set of a sequel to "Abigail's Party".

ArtVandalay · 15/04/2022 13:32

Hostess trolley is hilarious.

When we host a barbecue, we cook everything so it’s all ready at once. This might involve putting some cooked stuff in foil.

I think it’s a bit odd to serve it piecemeal.

Mooshering · 15/04/2022 13:33

Hostess trolley 😄

Is your OH an American housewife in 1953?

BoredZelda · 15/04/2022 13:35

I’d do a bit of both. Have an amount of each thing cooked for guests to start eating then add to it as an when it’s ready.

WeAllHaveWings · 15/04/2022 13:37

It is illegal to eat meat any other way than straight off the BBQ. Section 4.3(ii) of the 1996 BBQ act.

If it is cooked and, on the very rare occasion, no-one wants it just yet, it goes on the part of the BBQ where there is only indirect heat.

Tlollj · 15/04/2022 13:43

Are you going to wrapping up bananas in silver foil? If not I’m not coming. 😄

alltheteeshirts · 15/04/2022 14:03

I always think the risk of poorly cooked meat is higher at BBQs, because few people cook that style often enough to be good at it.

I'd rather be served directly from the BBQ, so I could cut into some meat and alert the cook it was underdone, so they could chuck it back on and/or adjust the cooking time for the remaining batch.

The idea of putting BBQ meat in a hostess trolly makes me shudder, because I can just imagine undercooked meat in a pile gradually cooling. I think cook it and immediately eat it is just safer.

I apply the same approach of cook it and immediately eat it to pancakes too, but in that case, it's because I like pancakes and I'm not waiting for them. Grin

YANBU but I am coming round to his idea of a hostess trolley. Relaxed barbecues are often anything but relaxed for the host. Instead of cooking and joining your guests, you end up spending the entire afternoon standing at a furnace, replenishing salads and drinks, all while trying to eat on the run a sausage in a bun without dripping ketchup down your front... if you were lucky enough that they didn't all go before you finished serving everyone else. But then I think of sad dried up burgers sitting in a fake teak trolley, which doesn't seem like much fun either.

maddy68 · 15/04/2022 14:06

He's crazy. That's not a BBQ at all! Terrible BBQ etiquette is grounds for divorce

SarahBellam · 15/04/2022 14:11

HOW IS THIS EVEN A QUESTION?

What is he? Some sort of psychopath?

Have my very first LTB. This kind of hostess trolley behaviour is the hallmark of a very dark mind.

5128gap · 15/04/2022 14:15

The hostess trolley definitely. I'd LOVE that. And maybe a fondue and some babycham with glace cherries in! And tupperware! Takes me back...

chisanunian · 15/04/2022 14:15

Either it happens your way, or if he's adamant it's done his way, then he does all the cooking himself.

MeridianB · 15/04/2022 14:18

Fuck the hostess trolley 😁

user1471538283 · 15/04/2022 14:18

We've always eaten as we've gone along like you because when my DS was small there would be bloody murder if he didnt eat straight away. Everyone has something, then something else when it's ready.

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 15/04/2022 14:21

I went to a bbq done your husbands way about 6 years ago and we all still talk about how it was the worst one we have ever been too. We could smell the food being cooked but couldn’t eat anything and it took fucking ages to be done. We were seriously considering leaving and going to the local Mac Donald’s! By the time the food was finally served the serving table was essentially attacked by a plague of locusts because everyone was starving. I would never got to a bbq at that persons house again! Seriously YANBU!

Silvercatowner · 15/04/2022 14:25

Definitely the hostess trolley thing - genius idea. I cannot cope with the uncertainty of food being ready at random times and often go home hungry from events like that because I don't know how/when to eat.

5128gap · 15/04/2022 14:45

Its also such a gamble with the grazing style. Do I eat the burgers AND the chicken drumsticks, and risk being too full if something better emerges later? I know there's something else behind that door, but do I pass on the chicken, in case it's the star prize of the belly draft? Because with my luck, I'll throw away what I could have won, and it'll just be hotdogs...?

Hankunamatata · 15/04/2022 14:52

We tend to cook all food in short space time as charcoal doesnt last overly long. We bung it in oven then everyone helps themselves over the day.

Fairislefandango · 15/04/2022 14:53

No to grazing, but also no to hostess trolley! All sides set out on big table, meat on bbq, put in oven when ready until rest of meat is done. Serve all in one go.

TeaAndCock · 15/04/2022 14:55

The burgers etc are only just warm in the trolley, the cheese doesn't melt on them and they dry out too.

needmorethanthis · 15/04/2022 14:57

If you’re going to serve it in a hostess trolley what’s the point of doing a bbq?

milkyaqua · 15/04/2022 14:58

Let him put the condiments on the hostess trolley. The rest is madness.

Birdy272 · 15/04/2022 15:03

Vile little dickhead. He could do with meeting my scary big brother down a secluded dark alley somewhere 👊🥰

Nnique · 15/04/2022 15:06

@Birdy272 I think that might going a little too far... Grin

Birdy272 · 15/04/2022 15:12

I'm not the one regularly spouting actual hate speech in some paper read by wankers daily but ok 🤐
