To be totally fed up with dogs?

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

I'm not sure why you think someone who chooses to work in a Pet Shop should have to 'put up with' dogs, but someone who chooses to work in another dog-friendly workplace should not.

If you want to work in a clothes shop and don't want to be around dogs, then work in one of the many that do not allow dogs. But if a clothes shop chooses to allow dogs, they are and should be entirely entitled to do so.

And of course no employee can avoid being near dogs entirely in the workplace, unless they want to exclude service dogs.

Unless it’s a dog which is used as an aid eg for a person with impaired vision, then WHY on earth would a person even need to bring a dog into a clothing store?! Or for any store at all.

Convenience.

If I'm out for dog walk or lunch and my dog is with me, it's really convenient if I don't have to drop my dog some and return to town if I need to pick something up from a shop.

I actively choose to frequent shops that are dog friendly precisely for that reason - if I need a pint of milk, it's so much easier to pick it up on the way back from walking the dog than to have to go out twice. And if shops recognise that and choose to appeal to the custom of people like me, they should be free to do so.

For the same reason why you may need to bring a child into a clothing store - because you may not be able to leave them at home or with someone else.

Or maybe do you can get clothes for your kids in the right size…….

And also if you can also learn that not everyone loves dogs the way you do, then also great
I didn't need to learn this. I totally accept and always have that not everyone care for dogs, even the very cute ones, although I'm still to come across such a person in life.

As pointed above, I fully accept that someone might not care for my dog, I don't need their gratification at all and I respect their feelings.

I however have an issue with those who would i.pose that ALL dogs should be on lead all the time because of a very small minority of people who don't like dogs and the even smaller minority of dogs who cause trouble.

I am 100% as cross with those who don't pick up poo (drives me very angry) and those who indeed minimise their dogs bad behaviour). But MOST dogs owners are responsible and the very vast majority of dogs are totally harmless.

I am DONE with the comparison of dogs with human children. It’s such a ridiculous argument. One is a human child. One is an animal.

Right, and I totally didn’t need to be reminded that some people love dogs.
everyone already knows that!
hence the whole point to this thread.

No dog is 100% harmless.

I love dogs and I’m fed up of them. They’re treated like fucking royalty by some people. Your family member who is annoyed at your daughter being scared is not at all reasonable and the kind of person that makes me fed up with dogs

Do you never take kids into (clothing) stores unless it's to buy something they need to try on? I very much doubt that. And that's your right of course. Just like it's dog owners' right to take their dogs into establishments that allow dogs.

But your comparison is not one dog owners make. If I were to compare it would be to say: I love my kids, I love my dog, so want to do what makes both happy'. I don't ever think 'my child is a human so I'll do all I can fir them my dog is an animal so I'll do what makes the very few people scared of dogs happy'.

No dog is 100% harmless I said vast majority not 100%. No human is 100% safe, neither are buildings, cars, trees. They are all unpredictable and could do you harm, but I expect you don't avoid them all.

Ermmmm. You said the vast majority of dogs are harmless.
and I am responding by stating the fact that NO dogs are EVER completely harmless. Not one of them.
they ALL have the ability to do harm.

Again, factually, children, like all other humans, are animals. You can dispute this all you like - this is basic reality, basic science.

Humans are superior.
if I saw a dead squirrel on the side of the road, it would be mildly sad.
if I saw a dead child on the side of the road it would destroy me and I would need years of therapy.
that’s the difference.

Humans are animals, we're not alien or divine.

You really believe your OWN children are equally important as an ant?!

Lockheart · 12/01/2023 13:28

I do find the insistence that humans are not animals odd. We're mammals just like dogs, and in our own ways we're just as gross. We shed our hair and skin everywhere, we take our un-toilet-trained infants everywhere, we (collective we) sneeze and cough all over the fruit and veg in the supermarket, we spit, we urinate and worse in the street (see any town centre on Saturday night and behaviour of tourists in local beauty spots during COVID!) and a surprising number of us pick our noses and don't even wash our hands after going to the toilet. And most of the time, none of the above is really a big deal.

Honestly, humans are animals too.

I'd also rather be stuck alone in a room with a strange dog than a strange man. Just saying.

Simply by reading some of these comments you can see that people actually believe that dogs are equal to humans. And not just humans - but CHILDREN. It’s actually worrying and scary tbh. In fact one comment goes as far to say they PREFER the dog to their own kid. Makes me PHYSICALLY SICK TO MY STOMACH. Easy to see how kids are mauled to death tbh when people are this far in denial !!

You said we are animals and not divine. So you think humans are the same level as animals. Otherwise you are agreeing with me that we are superior as a species.
