To be totally fed up with dogs?

dogtroubl · 14/04/2022 13:50

When we moved in, neighbours had an old dog that used to wander into our garden and leave poo everywhere. Couldn’t use garden with young kids due to mess and large dog.

Complained (politely), after quite a bit of unpleasantness fence finally fixed, dog died and they got 2 new dogs that were loud but contained.

Neighbours moved, new neighbours also have 2 dogs and fence is in a bad state of repair again due to the constant barking, snarling and scratching that happens every time we go outside. I always make sure I’m out there with the kids in case it breaks because they don’t sound friendly at all.

Their neighbours also have 2 dogs so the 2 sets are always setting each other off barking.

Family members also have dogs. One very old who soils everywhere and one very large, young dog who is very playful and jumps up and licks and dribbles all over you.

My daughter is terrified (the dog is easily as tall as her) and the family member always says dog will be shut away when we go over, but dog is always let or gets out soon after. I can tell my daughter’s fear of this dog irritates the family member but she’s genuinely scared after an incident when she was a toddler, plus this dog is like a horse to her and could do serious damage even with just a nip.

We’ve been to a few kids’ playgrounds over the holidays, dogs off lead and running all over the place at each one. Chasing kids in a “playful” way that scares them.

Dog poo all over footpaths and verges everywhere. Kids tread in it, I tread in it, buggy goes in it because I don’t see it until it’s too late.

I know it’s bad owners not the dogs’ fault etc but AIBU to just be totally fed up with dogs?

My most memorable experiences of dogs:

  • Watched my little brother almost being mauled to death by an unleashed dog which burst out from the trees, whilst we were out for a walk as a family (many years ago and the experience has absolutely given me an inbuilt total disdain and fear for dogs)
  • I know a lovely man who DIED because of sepsis from a dog bite (a random dog bit him) - he has left behind TWO small children.
  • My mum was bitten by a random dog and had to go to hospital.
  • Sitting in a park with my family eating a picnic - a dog comes up to us, we try and shoo it away - it pisses ALL OVER US AND OUR PICNIC!!
  • Being at houses where there are dogs as pets and there is disgusting dog hair and the smell of dog everywhere!
  • Dogs constantly running up to me and my kids whilst we are out and about minding our own business. GO AWAY!!!!
  • Dog Poo EVERYWHERE these days !!

Dogs are WILD DANGEROUS ANIMALS ! Yes - they can be trained . Yes - they can be domesticated . HOWEVER they are STILL wild animals and you can NEVER be sure how they will react to a given situation. They are UNPREDICTABLE and instinctive. They are PREDATORS . Denying any of this is IRRESPONSIBLE even if you are a dog owner.
Dogs have SHARP claws , HUGE SHARP teeth , smelly hair , fleas , they are LOUD and DESTRUCTIVE and SCARY !!, etc etc. If you have ANY sense then it is very very easy to see why not everyone LOVEEEES your dog!
Dog poo is disgusting and can land a person in hospital with SERIOUS complications !!
comparing humans to dogs is LUDICROUS !! People arguing that kids are more harmful than dogs !! Get A Grip, You Are Embarrassing Yourselves !! Entitled ignorant owners everywhere who clearly have NO IDEA how their untrained horrible dog can impact others!

TO ALL OWNERS: if you are unable to train your dog and also keep it on a lead in public - do not get a dog. If you are unenthusiastic about picking up faeces - do not get a dog. If you cannot understand that others around you do not like dogs, then do not get a dog.

SICK OF HOW MANY THERE ARE. Everyone seems to have not one but two or three dogs nowadays. All untrained! All with not enough private land to properly train or exercise them adequately.

FED UP OF THE “oh sorry it’s just a puppy” or “it’s just excited” . NOT GOOD ENOUGH - YOURE A TERRIBLE DOG OWNER!! GET IT AWAY FROM ME AND MY FRIGHTENED CHILDREN AND PUT IT ON A LEAD! STOP MAKING OPEN SPACES UNUSABLE FOR THOSE WHO DONT LOVE DOGS !!

That poor little boy Frankie whose stupid parents left him in a static caravan with the beloved family pet. He was KILLED !!
and many other DEVASTATING stories just like his. All because people are UNWILLING TO ADMIT THAT THEIR DOG IS AN ANIMAL !

This is a bit of a loony rant but I can’t say I disagree with a word of it. I’m quietly gutted that pretty much every open green space, woodland etc is now a no go zone for my family, and for anyone who isn’t willing to be in constant physical contact of some form with other peoples’ dogs.

They are every bloody where and you can’t do anything to get away from them. A family picnic is a thing of the past because a constant stream of dogs just come over and stick their faces or arses in it or worse. Even beaches marked as dogs not allowed have them everywhere because arrogant owners ignore the rules and no one stops them.

I would never be allowed to let my children jump at, lick, steal food from, scratch or bite random dog owners and damage their clothes and belongings. So why in the world should I be expected to endure that from their pets?! It’s baffling that anyone can be so entitled as to think that’s in any way reasonable.

We need properly observed rules providing outdoor spaces for all users, including people who have no desire to be jumped on, licked or constantly harassed by other peoples’ animals.

“Other people’s kids I couldn’t care less about quite frankly” - I feel sad for you.

Just about sums up in one post the kind of shitty dog owner attitudes that are the problem. Of course you know your dog isn’t going to harm anyone (as much as anyone can know that) but don’t you have the intelligence to realise that not everyone knows that and that some people are cautious around all dogs because it’s not possible to judge on sight immediately which could be a problem? Or the empathy to understand that to a small child, a dog is fucking massive and it’s not wildly unreasonable for them to be wary?

Any decent dog owner (and human being) is capable of recognising those things, having a nice chat with kids and parents and helping them to see that not all dogs are a scary threat. In the same way that good parents teach their kids to be considerate of dogs and not pull their tails etc.

Basically it’s just about being a decent human being and not a nasty confrontational arsehole for the fun of it…. Sadly some people prefer being an arrogant dickhead because they can 🤷‍♀️

I wouldn't have put it quite in those somewhat hysterical terms, but you're not wrong.

SummerPeach · 11/01/2023 16:04

Children are not capable of giving you sepsis.

Indeed. The comparison between children and dogs also isn’t valid because children are literally us, our species, every dog owner was once a child. Children will pay taxes that will support the dog owners in their ageing years and pay for their healthcare etc. They can try and separate themselves all they like from ‘other peoples’ children but it’s fact that we are all interlinked as a species.

Also I’m not allowed to let me kids run wild and piss on random strangers so…perhaps return the favour?

Trying to say they are in any way the same thing is laughable.

False. A bite from human can give you sepsis as well as many other nasty things. Kids do bite, especially when young. However that's not the argument here. I am just frustrated at the generalisations in your rather hysterical post.

Thank you for your sanity. Some of these comments are actually worrying! If a person seriously cannot understand that children need protecting above any dog then that person is beyond help.

SummerPeach · 11/01/2023 16:22

What were my generalisations?
p.s. sepsis from a bite from a child is virtually unheard of. And I’ve never seen a child run up to a stranger and bite them.
dogs on the other hand …

Why are you so pressed that I’m hysterical about something? What’s it to you? I’m sure there are things that make you angry that wouldn’t make me angry. And what were my generalisations?

I'm guessing: never.

I am not denying that dogs bite. I have seen kids bite each other, why is that so hard for you to believe? I mentioned the generalisations in my first response to you. Did you not read it?

Delandra · 11/01/2023 16:36

Some people shouldn’t own dogs. We’re in an area where there are lots of people with dogs. We had a recent walk in a local woodland reserve and it was covered in dog poo/discarded poo bags. There were plenty of bins but some people can’t be bothered. Some folk don’t have a clue about responsible ownership and training and this become a nuisance for walkers and other dog owners.

Ermm but you made the point that human bites can cause sepsis the same as dog bites. I responded that it’s far far less common. At no point did I try and put across that kids don’t bite.

100% this. I do not understand what goes through a persons mind when they just let their dogs poo all over public spaces. The entitlement and selfishness is so unfathomable. Dog poo is terrible for the environment , terrible for humans , and as for the plastic bags of poo left hanging in trees - I cannot even try to understand !

Scalottia · 11/01/2023 16:46

I simply said that it is possible that human bites can. You said previously that children aren't capable of giving sepsis - another blanket statement. Then you said that it's virtually unheard of. But the possibilty does exist which can't be denied.

Look I get it, you are angry due to some really shitty things caused by dogs. I am not defending dogs, I actually agree with a lot of points in this thread. I hate dogs in restaurants, for example. I also hate generalisations that all dogs are bad.

As for parents that leave children unsupervised with dogs, well those parents are just stupid.

HushLittleBabyDontYouCry · 11/01/2023 16:50

I've been bitten by a child and a dog.
The difference being that the child doing the biting had a behaviour plan put in immediately, social services got involved and the parents accepted that it was not appropriate behaviour.

When the dog bit me unprovoked I got blamed because 'they could sense my fear' (I'm not scared of dogs, particularly this little rat breed) and it was 'only being friendly'.

In an average week I see dog shit on the street countless times and have my toddler jumped up by arsehole owned canines who are 'just being friendly'. I regularly have my clothes ripped or muddied by them in towns, country and even pubs (rip leather trousers)

Had zero clothes ruined by children.
When a child hurts or scares my child 'being friendly' is not an acceptable excuse and only used by very rare permissive arsehole parents.
Have yet to step in toddler shit.

Dog apologists are batshit. If they actually trained and followed appropriate boundaries they'd have no reason to get defensive. It's very telling there are so many model dog owners willing to defend shitty behaviour by dog owners. I don't go around defending feral children, but probably would if I had one.

Funny how everyone on mumsnet picks up their shit, uses leads appropriately. I guess all the shitty owners are on netmums🤣

Actually human bite wounds are statistically more dangerous than those of other animals, because of the nature and volume of the bacteria our mouths are host to and the viruses we can carry. You're actually less at risk of serious infection from an animal bite.

My blanket statement about sepsis only being caused by dogs - I take that back. It was too generalised you’re right.
But I guess I just meant that fears of dog bites are justified. Yes - fears of children biting maybe equally justified I don’t know.
But ultimately dogs are nothing like human children.

I suspect as well that dog bites are a FAR more common occurrence than human bites.

Moxysright · 11/01/2023 17:54

Definitely too many dogs, everyone’s a breeder these day. Quick and easy money. People have no idea how to train especially the big ones which is a worry. Can’t bare when I take dc to the park and people have them off lead and allow them to approach! I would never let my dc approach a dog so why vice versa.

Misspacorabanne · 11/01/2023 18:14

Oh give over! Why are we even comparing a dog bite with a human bite! Never have I ever thought I hope I don't get bitten by someone in the park today with my kids, but regularly I'll have a random dog run up to us and that I'd worry about! So silly! Dogs are animals! They should have designated areas!
