Just when you think this government can't get any worse - now they are going to send asylum seekers to Rwanda

I didn't vote for this shower. The problem with people arriving (if they make it) in small boats needs addressing but AIBU that sending them on a one way trip to Rwanda isn't the answer?

@Dogmum40

As long as it’s safe for the vulnerable I can’t see an issue, if they are genuine they will be offered the right to stay, if they are coming to the uk with bad intentions then they get refused entry!

Surely this is a better alternative to people coming in illegally on boats who have paid vast sums to traffickers! If they genuinely need help this could be a better solution all round as if they are genuine they should find the legal route of entering

It's immoral and I am horrified.

It's not an alternative though is it?
This didn't work for the Australians and they are waaaay more competent than us.

Surely to God we haven't sunk as low as this? Is anyone wavering in support for the chancers and charlatans who have found themselves ankle-deep in the public money trough (Sofas! Parties! Wallpaper! Loadsamoney!) and who now fear having their grasping fingers prised away? Feeling a tad disappointed in Bozo and the charming Ms Patel? Here you are then, have a bone. We should all be bitterly ashamed of what we've allowed our country to become. Fortunately this is a distraction and very unlikely to come about but, bloody hell, how shameful to even conceive of such a thing. Nauseating.

Its not "instead off" its "as well as" and there is no legal way of coming here, the UK have removed that, which is why so many come illegally plus its extremely difficult to filter Economic from so called Genuine.

No one will be deterred from coming here and all the traffickers have to do is target female migrants, leaving the men at home, so the intended consequence will be to put even more women at risk of sex traffickers, one reason why its men who come to Europe first in order to protect their female family members.

I don't know why the Tories don't just send refugees to Russia and be done with it :(

That’s because they don’t have a exit plan for the migrants

As I said in my post initially as long as the vulnerable are processed quickly there shouldn’t be a problem

If a boat of say 10 people land illegally and of those 2 or 3 of those are criminals would you want them walking the streets, if they are taken out of the equation at processing surely that would be better and safer for all of us

luxxlisbon · 14/04/2022 09:40

It’s a pretty wild assumption that 20-30% of refugees are criminals. What exactly are you using to draw that conclusion and why would sending them to Rwanda flag up these potential criminals any more than the UK?

Ok say 1 person then! Don’t tell me everyone that comes in here illegally is here for good intentions 😆
MoiraNotRuby · 14/04/2022 09:41

I thought it was some belated April fool.

Just ridiculous. So embarrassing that Britain thinks its the best place in the world. The message is "Hello lesser human, we are allocating you to a lesser country" WTF. Its offensive to refugees, its offensive to Rwanda, its honestly like a spoof.

Mischance · 14/04/2022 09:45

This is so deeply depressing.

luxxlisbon · 14/04/2022 09:46

Ok say 1 person then! Don’t tell me everyone that comes in here illegally is here for good intentions 😆

So to root out 1 would-be criminal we should send 10 vulnerable people fleeing war or persecution to Rwanda which is a third world country with a horrendous human rights record?
In what way would that help?
Why would Rwanda be able to deal with this more than us?

It is taking advantage of a corrupt and immoral government in a developing nation and shipping our problem to them.

Much like the uk shipping it’s rubbish off to third world countries, except this time it is human beings.

Alexandra2001 · 14/04/2022 09:49

@Dogmum40 How do you decide who is a criminal or not? Do you think you can access the Afghan criminal police records database in Kabel to find out? or maybe Assad in Syria will co operate?

Most have no paper work, so its difficult to even know where they have come from or even their name/age.

I think its absolutely terrible to take a refugee and because they are classed as economic, send them to Rwanda and lock them up without trial for many years... which is exactly is what the Govt is planning.

I would love to know how you plan to figure out who is a criminal - how do you think that works exactly?

The vulnerable would hopefully come back within a week or two safe with visas, places to live and benefits so they can start a new life here!

Until the full plan is released we don’t know what will happen but I’m definitely happy for families to settle here and criminals banned, we have too many criminals here in the uk as it is so need to deter them from coming here and we need to provide a safe and reliable process for those that really need us and quickly

Hospedia · 14/04/2022 09:52

A brief overview of Rwanda's record on human rights, more in depth information is readily available on Google.

I'm sure that the internment camps.... sorry, migrant centres ... will be happy, healthy, safe places free from any sort of abuse, "accidental" killing, and disease. If history has taught us anything its that sticking marginalised people into mass internment facilities overseen by people who abuse human rights always ends well and is a fun time for all involved. Like Butlins but with barbed wire.

This government is shameless. I'd call them cunts but they lack the required warmth and depth.

Hospedia · 14/04/2022 09:53

Forgot to attach the overview

TheNoonBell · 14/04/2022 09:54

Well France refuses to take them back so we are just passing the parcel as it were.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/04/2022 09:55

Not sure why people are getting so worked up about this when it's perfectly obvious it's just a distraction technique for Partygate

If even one migrant finishes up in Rwanda I'll be very surprised - unless they were going there anyway and the BBC "borrow" them at government request to pretend they were sent

Hospedia · 14/04/2022 09:59

The vulnerable would hopefully come back within a week or two safe with visas, places to live and benefits so they can start a new life here!

How delightfully naive. Will they gallop into thr country on a majestic unicorn as tenners rain down from the sky and Priti Patel herself waits on a podium to personally welcome them? Because that has more chance of happening than then being brought back a week or two later to start a new life.

What will happen is that they'll basically be left to rot in Rwanda, tied up in years of red tape and paperwork, not allowed to go home but not allowed to come here either so effectively stateless. It's a sickening escalation of the hostile environment policy and if its implemented then I give it 6-12 months of operation before someone suggests those in the camps should be put to work to earn their keep and we all know what the next step up from that is.

Babdoc · 14/04/2022 10:02

It is all very well to condemn the plan to send them to Rwanda, but what is your alternative?
The UK does not have sufficient housing for our own population. Waiting lists for council accommodation are soaring, houses are unaffordable, and we are one of the most densely populated countries in Europe.
Migrant numbers would involve building a new city every year. And that doesn’t include provision for their future children.
So what do you suggest, OP?

Hospedia · 14/04/2022 10:02

Not sure why people are getting so worked up about this when it's perfectly obvious it's just a distraction technique for Partygate

It'll only last until the next tranche of fines are issued which will hopefully cover the 13th November party so will include Johnson again. Maybe later today or perhaps Tuesday?

mynamesnotMa · 14/04/2022 10:02

Doesn't surprise me in the least. They couldn't give two hoots about our vulnerable members of society so do something so pernicious is par of their course.
How can they deter the criminal gangs?

Georgeskitchen · 14/04/2022 10:02

@lemongreentea

Tory votes will be delighted.

The UK is a cesspit of racist arseholes.

How bizarre then, that everyone wants to come here......
balalake · 14/04/2022 10:08

The money spent on flights would be better spent in recruiting more people to process asylum applications, so they are days not weeks or months. If you accept an application, then the person can start working, having language lessons etc. If you don't and they are returned to another country, probably less traumatic than doing so after months or years of waiting.

SleeplessInEngland · 14/04/2022 10:08

This may result in a brief 1-2 point bump in the polls, then it'll be quickly forgotten after the next inevitable scandal. Every government policy now reeks of short-termism and desperation.
