Walked out of cinema mid movie

Took my dd to see the secrets of dumbledore. Really didn't enjoy it, wasn't our thing and the cinema was boiling on top of that, I was burning up and so uncomfortable. Daughter agreed she wasn't enjoying the film so we walked out about 45 minutes into it (discreetly I hope). Both agreed once out that we had no idea what was going on, the storyline was difficult to follow.

Obviously we were home early and my husband was outraged (no exaggeration) that we had paid money to see a film and walked out mid way. He said it's rude and a waste of money and not teaching my dd anything Confused I think he's mad and considering this particular film is 2.5 hours long, I'd rather not sit and bear it.

Of course it's not rude. I've walked out of the cinema before. I've also given up on books I've not been enjoying. Life's too short!

Couchbettato · 14/04/2022 08:20

We walked out of Macbeth because we couldn't stop cringing.

The theatre kept our money so I'm sure they don't give a toss.

I think it's more rude to go to the cinema and fall asleep, which I've also done many a time 😁

DameHelena · 14/04/2022 08:23

Well, I'm not surprised you found the storyline difficult to follow if you hadn't seen the previous ones. And I'm a bit Hmm that you didn't realise it was part of a series. I think it's a waste to spend money on the third film in a series you haven't seen any of before.

But there's nothing wrong per se with walking out and I've no idea who your DH thinks it's rude to Confused It's not like walking out of a theatre while someone is onstage mid-soliloquy.
Has he elaborated on why it was 'rude'?

ProudMary79 · 14/04/2022 08:24

You didn't do anything wrong, husband sounds bonkers 😳. How come you couldn't follow it? Had you seen the previous two and any of the Potters?

Mybestyear · 14/04/2022 08:26

YANBU and your husband is being arsey. We used to live in Australia and got tickets for an Aussie rules football game. Big team but my god it was boring so we left about half way through. Went for a drink in a bar close to the stadium and the barman was aghast. He simply could not believe we’d left before the end. I walked out of “the cook the thief the wife and her lover” (think it was called that) as it was utter tripe. Life really is too short.

Tillerman · 14/04/2022 08:31

It’s fine and I have done this before myself. If you don’t enjoy a film there’s zilch point in sticking around, especially if it’s a long film.

Brambieblue · 14/04/2022 08:32

Your husband sounds unreasonably controlling! It’s up to you how long you stay in a cinema.

Ballcactus · 14/04/2022 08:34

@Duracellbunnywannabe

You taught your daughter that she doesn’t need to keep doing something if it isn’t what she expected/isn’t enjoying it. Judging by the relationship board this is something every girl/women definitely needs to learn but many haven’t.
This!
Wheniruletheworld · 14/04/2022 08:36

I lost 2 hours 42 minutes of my life watching Avatar with my Godsons. II regret ir to this day...Grin
Life is too short to waste on crap entertainments

Sooverthemill · 14/04/2022 08:41

It's not rude. If you are short of cash it's annoying I guess to 'waste' the money. But really if it's rubbish I'd do it. I've walked out of 2 films and both times the popcorn chap said 'oh it's at that point is it? I'll fire up the coffee machine' or similar ( reservoir dogs was one, deliverance was the other)

Kuachui · 14/04/2022 08:41

surely it would still be a waste of money if you had sat through the entire thing and hated it still

thejadedone · 14/04/2022 08:44

I walked out of Meet Joe Black as I thought it was terrible!

I can't see how it was rude. It's not like it is live theatre and anybody fro the cast saw you leave!!!

Benjispruce4 · 14/04/2022 08:46

We walked out of The Perfect Storm. There was a row of chatterboxes in front. We got our money back too.Grin

notanothertakeaway · 14/04/2022 08:50

Staying for whole film that you don't enjoy is good example of sunk costs fallacy

As an aside, I love that you and DD can communicate by blinking. That's very cool

RomansTheyGoTheHouse · 14/04/2022 08:53

I walked out of Dodgeball. God knows how I ended up in there watching it in the first place - I forget now. Thankfully.

RomansTheyGoTheHouse · 14/04/2022 08:56

@Fullofhotcrossbuns

We have stopped going to the Cinema now

For some reason people seem to have the idea that they can sit and chat through a film, use their phone, put their foot up on the back of your chair , attend with Covid but the worse thing is people book seats next to you in a empty Cinema.

Why ?

I'm with you - on cinemas and hot cross buns Grin

I've come to the conclusion that the talking etc isn't 'wrong' because so many people now do it. It's just that the rules of the game have changed and they no longer suit me. What does suit me is watching something at home in the peace and quiet and with my own snacks and toilets Grin

mrziggycoco · 14/04/2022 09:01

You got out of a situation you were not enjoying.

A skill few of us possess, and get angry when those who do exhibit the fact.

ColettesEarrings · 14/04/2022 09:01

I think you were mad not to have done even a 10 second Google to research a film first. Tickets round here are anywhere between £8 and £15 and there's no way I'm spending that without knowing roughly what the film is and whether it's my type of thing. That would have shown you out was part three of five and you'd have been able to discuss with your daughter whether she still wanted to go.

KitKat1985 · 14/04/2022 09:01

Not rude, but possibly a bit privileged. The cinema is so expensive these days and would be a real treat for us, so it wouldn't occur to me to walk out of a film midway through.

oncetwixe · 14/04/2022 09:12

@Libertybear80

You sound a bit daft to be honest. You went to see the third film in a trilogy without seeing the others !
Oh shut up. What a rude comment, OP has explained over and over again.

It's not a treat if you're not enjoying it though.

Does the money magically reappear in your bank account if you sit through the whole thing?
SpiderinaWingMirror · 14/04/2022 09:23

Life is too short to watch something you don't like for 2.5 hours!
I found this out with Les Mis.

LillianGish · 14/04/2022 09:25

It’s a standing joke in our family that my first question about any proposed film is how long is it? Anything over an hour-and-a-half has to be something I seriously want to watch. This now automatically rules out any film starring Leonard di Caprio - The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Great Gatsby - even Titanic - every time someone tried to persuade me they were great films, every single one would have benefited from judicious editing instead of being drawn out to the point of tedium. Longer is not better - in fact more often than not it’s worse. Obviously there are exceptions, but two-and-half-hours for the third part of a trilogy I knew nothing about would have set alarm bells ringing for me Grin.

Obviously not, but it is clearly a waste of money, and frankly not something families who are really struggling would do. My kids would be so excited to be in a cinema I don't think they would leave even if they hated the film!
