Rishi and his wife

AIBU to ask

  1. What is wrong with him having a green card if this is not breaking any rules?

  2. What is wrong with his wife only paying UK tax on UK income if this is within the rules?

I assume what they are doing is no different to what anyone else is likely to do in their situation.

Isn't it the rules the need to change rather than their actions?

The trouble is, Rishi is in charge of the rules.

GeneLovesJezebel · 10/04/2022 07:55

Daily Mail is reporting that they have moved out of Downing Street.

Well that's probably because they are fed up with the neighbours having parties at all hours of the day and night.

Not really entirely true is it. It's not a dictatorship where he gets to make all decisions on his own..
nattichix · 10/04/2022 08:10

It's just racism if you ask me. They're just out to get him / them.

There are taxation rulers that we all abide by. Are the rules, you need to pay the highest tax that you possibly can ? No. Most people have accountants that make sure they don't overpay or underpay- within the rules.

So if I engage an accountant to make sure I don't overpay or underpay, does that also make me immoral ? Because I didn't pay the absolute maximum that HMRC may have asked from me in error ?

You can't have one rule for them and another rule for us.

If we don't like the non dom rules, that's something different that we need to campaign against. I believe in 2017 it was made much more difficult to be a non dom already. But if they haven't broken any laws, leave them alone.

FatOaf · 10/04/2022 08:15

Most people have accountants

Hard to believe there is anyone (apart from Sunak) this stupidly out of touch.

No, most people do not have accountants.

chimichangaz · 10/04/2022 08:17

@nattichix

On what are you basing your racism allegation please?

BettyBag · 10/04/2022 08:18

Such transparent projection from people saying this is jealously.

It would never occur to them that everybody isn't a greedy twat and that we would actually like a fairer society.

Just because you wish that you had millions you didn't have to pay tax on doesn't mean the rest of us would.

Nennypops · 10/04/2022 08:23

Slavery was within the rules when we had slavery. Does that make it OK?

@nattichix When you say it is just racism, is that because the person behind it is Boris who is well known to be racist?
Nennypops · 10/04/2022 08:26

@Whingasaurus

The Rushi's have done nothing wrong here it's misogyny and racism and jealousy. -No wife has to take her husbands nationality. -She pays taxes in her home country on her businesses there why should the British get a cut of that? -Do we insist the French, Italian Swiss, etc take British Nationality? My Spanish friend has lived here for 30 years and hasn't.
We're not paying rather a lot to house all the French, Italian, Swiss etc, nor are we paying for their security. Nor are they handing out fat government contracts to their friends whilst cutting benefits.
Nennypops · 10/04/2022 08:28

@Clavinova, aren't you confused defending Sunak when It is your hero Johnson briefing against him?

US journalist inquiring about green card issue.

Why aren't our journalists like this?

Sunak’s a lightweight but it’s insane that this is all being leaked by Johnson. We’re in the hands of prime minister who’s actively at war with his chancellor.

Mangowood · 10/04/2022 08:51

The green card thing is Shock.

His wife's tax affairs are her own business but my husbands are mine when deciding if I can claim child benefit or not Hmm.

I think Rishi has served his purpose now and the tories have decided to off load him so they can point the finger of blame at him for the cost of living crisis.

It makes Blair and Brown look amicable.
ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 10/04/2022 08:54

I'm pretty bored of Tory infighting being a bit part of UK politics. It's caused so much trouble.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 10/04/2022 08:54

A big part

awaynboilyurheid · 10/04/2022 08:56

Late reading this thread but thank you lettherain for sharing Richard Murphy’s opinion on Rishi Sunak on twitter.
It points out so many flaws that I had been concerned about, namely his massive over spending to prop up large companies, restaurant chains etc during lockdown, the PPE scandal of giving contracts to cronies, the millions spent on contact tracing which didn’t work, spend spend spend was his policy.
Now he is desperate to claw it back so WE have now to pay for his failures to manage the books.
Added to this now his wife paying for a non dom status to avoid paying tax in the country she lives with her family, not legally wrong but my goodness morally and ethically wrong for the man in charge of balancing the whole countries finances.
I would go so far to say it’s corrupt, Rishi certainly doesn’t need an MP’s salary but his wife’s wealthy family and contacts I’m sure need Rishi, as he’s right there making the laws that pave the tax way for them.

I agree this is tax planning.

Where do we stop when we judge the wealthy are they not entitled to their pensions, take advantage of tax planning ie ISAs, inheritance planning, VCT and EIS.

This current rule surrounding Non Doms brings investment and wealth to the UK. If we change this law there will be a massive wealth drain and tax drain too.

Also she's a woman so a nice convenient target

SilverGlitterBaubles · 10/04/2022 09:00

I assume what they are doing is no different to what anyone else is likely to do in their situation.

The thing is that they are not just 'anyone else' he is the Chancellor in charge of the nations finances. They are not just 'anyone else' because they are super wealthy and privileged beyond what most people in this country can dream of.

This highlights the issue that there could be conflicts of interest here. Has Sunak made decisions in his position as Chancellor that benefits him, his wife or associates personally? Is it morally wrong that the Chancellor's wife's companies took advantage of Covid schemes while many were denied any financial support? Is it right that the majority of people on this country have no choice but to pay tax while they Chancellors wealthy wife uses loopholes and schemes to avoid paying tax?

A reminder that this is the Chancellor who reduced UC by £20 when costs were rising, who initially refused to provide funding for feeding kids in school holidays while offering half price meals to those who could afford to eat out in restaurants. This is the man who was in charge of the country's finances while billions of pounds of our money was given to Tory cronies for useless PPE and other contracts with no oversight or recourse.

He is hopelessly over promoted and inept like the rest of Johnsons government. He needs to go but my fear is who would replace him Hmm

Because he is so wealthy he is much better at dealing with large sums of money than us ordinary minions. Please do not forget that or to doff your cap if you see him.

Does non dom status exist in the USA?

Tara12 · 10/04/2022 09:03

Because its a massaging of the actual facts of her domiciliary status.
Anyways she agreed to pay.
Because otherwise I am pretty sure his career would have been over.

Well if those people are so feckless to not be able to pay to feed their own children that is really their look out. If only they were as clever as Rishi then they could be as successful as him.
