Rishi and his wife

AIBU to ask

  1. What is wrong with him having a green card if this is not breaking any rules?

  2. What is wrong with his wife only paying UK tax on UK income if this is within the rules?

I assume what they are doing is no different to what anyone else is likely to do in their situation.

Isn't it the rules the need to change rather than their actions?

I hope that journalists research into why he was so keen and quick to write off the £7bn in stolen furlough money. Would be interested to know whether any associates of his had companies which benefited.

HMRC said its estimate of what will be recovered did not mean that it has written off the remainder, which it intends to pursue.

Labour are exactly the same which is why instead of having a manifesto that promised to end non dom status they just photocopied the Tory manifesto and distributed that.

Yvette Cooper was interviewed on LBC this morning (she had a stint as Chief Secretary to the Treasury under Gordon Brown). When asked if Labour would abolish non-dom status she was somewhat evasive and said that 'Rachel Reeves was looking at it'. Fence-sitting as usual from Keir Starmer's Labour.

I love Tory defences. It never amounts to anything more than “Labour are just as bad!”

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 10/04/2022 16:09

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

As I said on the other thread, when Tory PRs realise they can’t defend their heroes, they resort to claiming ‘they are all as bad as each other’.

All MPs are not the same. Many work out of a sense of public duty and care about the people of this country. A few years ago, MPs would have resigned for 10% of what Rishi has done.

I hope that journalists research into why he was so keen and quick to write off the £7bn in stolen furlough money. Would be interested to know whether any associates of his had companies which benefited. This and the PPE contracts.

Fraud, theft, corruption, malfeasance/misfeasance in public office, and treason would be good to rule out or in for a start.

Labour are much worse - has Keir Starmer worked out what a woman is yet?

NETSRIK · 10/04/2022 16:14

Money grabbing self centred, self interest tory greed. End of.

Momr · 10/04/2022 16:14

Infosys is a contractor to the UK government and publicly funded organisations

Benmac · 10/04/2022 16:14

The chancellor represents the government of the day. He does not actually draw up the tax strategies on his own. The whole episode stinks of racism and misogyny.
Most UK politicians have money behind them. Possibly not as much as Rishi has but most are financially okay.

MySecretHistory · 10/04/2022 16:20

I dont know Rishi or his wife

I know someone that does who is bemused by his public person as opposed to their billionaire life-style.

Nennypops · 10/04/2022 16:21

@Notonthestairs

Interestingly The Times hinted at a cabinet reshuffle after local elections with Truss & Sunak changing places so you might be on the money jgw!
But Sunak as foreign secretary could be even more problematic given that he has just caused the US some fairly major embarrassment.

We're in this GenderWoo mess under 12 years of Conservative Government.
SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 10/04/2022 16:25

No way can Sunak be a credible Foreign Secretary. I mean come on.

Not the best argument when the Conservatives have been in power for nearly 12 years and have failed to resolve this issue.

Given that criticism of Johnson, Raab, Rees-Mogg, Williamson, Hancock, Grayling and Gove has been much more vociferous, I don't think that accusation stands up to any sort of examination.
EsmaCannonball · 10/04/2022 16:51

He broke US law by standing for and holding political office in a foreign country while simultaneously holding a green card. He reportedly only gave up the green card (about six and half years after he should have done) because the Americans told him to. He may also be on dodgy ground in the US for claiming a green card while spending most of his time abroad. These issues have been raised at a White House briefing. Let's hope journalists there press the immigration and tax authorities to investigate his dodgy dealings further.

1dayatatime · 10/04/2022 16:59

Putting the optics to one side whilst Akshata Murtay has played within the rules to avoid paying higher taxation in the UK on her worldwide income there is a clear conflict of interest with her husband's job as the Chancellor.

Non-doms have to specifically apply for a tax exemption on foreign income of more than £2k meaning it is not an automatic designation for foreign-born residents or non-citizens.

As Chancellor he is effectively in charge of HMRC which in turn decides whether to grant AM non dom status or not.

She earns £11.5m in annual dividends she collects from her stake in Infosys, her billionaire father’s IT business. UK tax residents would pay about £4.5m (at 39.5%) in tax on the dividend payment whereas she actually pays £2.1m in tax to a combination of India (20%) and Mauritius (5%). She is estimated to have saved £20m so far from this arrangement.

Momr · 10/04/2022 17:25

She doesn't pay 20 percent tax on dividends in India .

Apparently Layla Moran has very kindly written to US officials asking them to investigate Rishi Sunak's green card status.

Oh right, so he's a bit like Boris in that regard and not actually responsible fo the policies of the government and department he runs. Is Rishi responsible for the pot plants and light entertainment in the Treasury in the same way as Boris is in No 10, of does Rishi have some other roles?

Well, no. You said that criticism of Sunak and his wife on this thread was racially motivated. I pointed out that those who criticise him criticise all those while men even more vociferously, which tends to suggest that all the targets of that criticism are in that position because of their own failures, not because of anyone's race.
Wheniruletheworld · 11/04/2022 06:33

@jgw1

Clumsy or not, if he decides his future in politics is over, will he reveal more about partygate etc. etc.?

I don't think his future in politics is over. It would seem to me that he ideally placed to become Foreign Secretary as he appears to desperately want to be foreign.

What a stupidly ignorant comment! You become 'foreign' if you become foreign minister?? Oh, I want to be a bus, can I be transport minister?
jgw1 · 11/04/2022 07:33

And yet somehow the comment is far more intelligent than those that some members of this government manage to come out with.
In the interests of self defining who one is, which this government is so keen on, see for instance Boris defining himself as an honest, good chap who likes cutting taxes, you can of course be a bus if you wish to.

walkersareback · 12/04/2022 08:54

@kirinm

He seems completely moronic. Rather than acknowledge how terrible this all looks, he's now ordered an investigation to find the leak in government because it could be a criminal offence. Doubling down is definitely the way to style this out. And to think he thought he'd be PM.
I think he has asked for the investigation to prove that Johnson knew about his wife's non-don status and didn't care - because it suited Johnson at the time.
