Deeply concerned about Child Safety in Bristol

MatthewJTaylor · 07/04/2022 21:28

From May 5th to May 8th 2022, the Tobacco Factory Theatres in Bristol is having performances of "The Family Sex Show".
This show is aimed at children 5 years old and up.
The performers involved get naked.
The discussion with the children is on sex, sexuality and sexual pleasure.

I cannot imagine brining a 5 year old child to a theatre where people will to to her/him about sex and show their naked bodies to her/him.

Am I the crazy one?

@teesht on it, thanks for the links!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 08/04/2022 11:01

Ii's interesting that shows like this wouldn't exist with public money. Imagine this lot having to fund a show like this themselves without the useful idiots at institutions like the Arts Council and other public bodies with zero experience or care about safeguarding children throwing money at it.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 08/04/2022 11:01

without public money!

I have worked for a long time in the field of child sexual abuse, and grooming children for abuse by giving them (and their parents) "education" about "relationships" etc is absolutely a huge thing and has been for decades. It's happened in religious organisations, schools, private tuition, sports and leisure settings, you name it. I've come across it literally hundreds of times. It just used to be mostly private. Now it's out there in full public view it seems.

FemaleAndLearning · 08/04/2022 11:08

Not read the whole thread. This is grooming. It is about eroding children's and adult's boundaries. so called Minor Attracted People (aka paedophiles in plain sight) must be rubbing their hands in glee. The relationship and sex education programme they refer to is not for 5 years olds. Plus they are putting their own gender woo woo slant on it so it actually goes above and beyond what any who is expected to teach. S hooks gave no obligation to teach above and beyond the Department 8f Education. If your school is doing this ask them why they are spending extra budget and children's time going above and beyond. Safe Schools Alliance have good resources to help you with this. safeschoolsallianceuk.net/
I didn't realise the World Health Organisation (that they link to) uses such offensive terms in its definitions of biological sex. I'm sure those with difference of sexual development are not happy about those definitions. Screenshots attached.

Spelling mistakes in their material too...(not the point I know, but it shows something...in a supposed "education" organisation).

MadKittenWoman · 08/04/2022 11:10

I live in Bristol and haven’t heard about this. Bristol is a pretty woke place, though, so I’d be surprised if it was as bad as it sounds.

MadKittenWoman · 08/04/2022 11:12

Will investigate at this end.

FOJN · 08/04/2022 11:14

This comment from SSA Twitter thread sums up how I'm feeling.

Does anyone else feel that they've morphed into a modern day Mary Whitehouse and are not ashamed? 🙃

MadKittenWoman · 08/04/2022 11:16

My info said that it happened last June and was for over-18s only.

MadKittenWoman · 08/04/2022 11:17

Sorry, wrong show…

www.artscouncil.org.uk/funding-map-2018-2022
Tobacco Factory Theatre awarded £241K from 2018-22 from Arts Council, which administers National Lottery Funding.
So that funding may have ended 31st March 2022. And may have nothing to do with this play. Might be worth searching the map for where the play was developed/premiered...
When you submit funding apps you usually are expected to sending in Safeguarding policies, risk assessments etc. These would be interesting to see.
So not clear whether this project Art Council funded, but some trust, foundation or statutory funder has....

StageRage · 08/04/2022 11:22

This thread is about Bristol, but Bristol is just one of the tour dates, It opens in Bath and Bath Theatre Royal commissioned the show.

Their children's theatre is usually good. This sounds like something that went badly wrong somewhere.

jellymaker · 08/04/2022 11:23

I have already had a response back from the Bristol safeguarding board. Please flood them with your concerns.bristolsafeguarding.org/contact-us/

It is clear. It is all on this page, at the bottom thefamilysexshow.com/about

Though it is part of the general lack of rigour displayed by this production on current evidence that no funders credits or logos for the actual production are present. It is usually a contractual demand.

radiohp · 08/04/2022 11:31

@FuckeryOmbudsman

It's taking the school PSHE curriculum for that age group and turning it into a show for families.

Those who think it's outrageous/grooming, do you actually know what is on that age group's curriculum and how your school delivers it?

Pretty sure the teachers at school aren't bollock naked mate
Manicsfan · 08/04/2022 11:31

Thanks for pointing that out @Stagerage. I can't look at that website - it's blocked by my internet provider! Maybe that's for the best.

FOJN · 08/04/2022 11:31

"jellymaker*

Would you be willing to share any of their response?

SpidersAreShitheads · 08/04/2022 11:32

@jellymaker - what did they say? I'm absolutely going to email them too.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/04/2022 11:39

The performers involved get naked
At one point for a couple of minutes if they feel comfortable

The enablers doubtless also minimised Dildo Rainbow Monkey's "show", insisting that it was suitable for children and that anything less appropriate was only a tiny part of it

Until they manage to get access that is - and with this current show I've no doubt the nakedness will spread and that the players will interpret the shrieks to insist "the children were enjoying it"

latriciamcneal · 08/04/2022 11:45

@NrlySp

This from their website Sexual development and behaviour in children starts from birth. It’s important that children are supported in their exploratory development, safely and comfortably. You can see the common stages of sexual development layed out by the NSPCC here. Dear Lord.
What would you do if you found out our entire globe was run by paedophiles operating trafficking rings posing as humanitarian organisations?
Disabrie22 · 08/04/2022 11:49

I’d like to watch it and make a choice based on that.

CousinKrispy · 08/04/2022 11:50

I'm a big believer in thorough sex ed for young people. But it needs to be age appropriate.

I can't see how a single show can be age-appropriate if the audience members range down as low as 5 years old. There's a huge difference in maturity between 5 and 8 or 11 or 15 or 25. You simply can't do one-size-fits-all sex ed for such a wide age range.

Therefore, unless the show is limited to age-5-appropriate material only, it's going to contain material inappropriate to the younger years, however good the intentions are.

And, yes, it also sounds incredibly cringey, so much like Legz Akimbo from League of Gentlemen.

ThePlantsitter · 08/04/2022 11:52

I can't be arsed to read the frothing on this thread. I think it looks brilliant.

You can tell yourself your 14 year old isn't wanking to some surgically enhanced naked woman being throttled and then thinking that extends to sex in real life if you want or you can start talking about consent and sexual pleasure young to normalise pleasure and explain what REAL consent looks like (clue: it isn't being paid to make fake sounds of ecstasy when you see an erect penis).
