Deeply concerned about Child Safety in Bristol

MatthewJTaylor · 07/04/2022 21:28

From May 5th to May 8th 2022, the Tobacco Factory Theatres in Bristol is having performances of "The Family Sex Show".
This show is aimed at children 5 years old and up.
The performers involved get naked.
The discussion with the children is on sex, sexuality and sexual pleasure.

I cannot imagine brining a 5 year old child to a theatre where people will to to her/him about sex and show their naked bodies to her/him.

Am I the crazy one?

This is the problem with a society that treats children like small adults. They are not.

risefromyourgrave · 08/04/2022 07:46

@orangeisthenewpuce

I've read through all the info for the show and I think any parent who books to take their child to this is lacking in judgement and parenting skills.
Or has ulterior motives…. 🚩
Rosscameasdoody · 08/04/2022 07:50

In my day sex education was on the secondary school curriculum. At age 5, children are not equipped to understand the complex issues involved. Why are we trying to sexualise children so young - what happened to just letting them be children ? Smacks of grooming to me.

This. All day long.
OutingHobby · 08/04/2022 07:54

Their website says the show isn't even quite finished yet!

HTH1 · 08/04/2022 07:54

What a hideous concept. My DC are much older than 5 but there is no way in hell I would take them to see that at any age.

There is no way a 5 year old should go to this. Its sick.

@Floydthebarber

Oh ffs, my repose was to this: *It's taking the school PSHE curriculum for that age group and turning it into a show for families.

Those who think it's outrageous/grooming, do you actually know what is on that age group's curriculum and how your school delivers it?*

No, but I’ll bet the teacher isn’t naked !!
SpaceyCake · 08/04/2022 08:00

It just had to be Bristol. 😂 There's no way in hell I would take my 5yo to watch a show where adults get naked and he'll learn about stuff like squirting. The whole blurb was so cringe and frankly really quite concerning to read. It's like the Mandiga Arts thing again. Yuck. I would consider reporting.

I am unable to comment as I have not seen the show. Have any of you..??

They havent even finished it yet so even the actors haven't seen it.

So can you give a theoretical scenario of how the show might possibly go that would make it acceptable for strangers to get naked in front of children on stage?

inappropriateraspberry · 08/04/2022 08:07

I wouldn't take a young child to that, and an older child would probably be mortified to watch something like this!
Completely inappropriate, and no child needs to know about sexual pleasure.

Whatever happened to end of primary school/first year of comp being shown a diagram, this is a penis, this is a vagina.

Then being told about safe sex, menstruation, and shown a video about reproduction etc in a way that didn't make you feel icky.

This is overstepping that boundary to me... I'm a parent I can tell my child the birds and bees, don't need some random adults to strip in front of them.

HoppingPavlova · 08/04/2022 08:08

Nope. Parents who take kids to this should be investigated imo.

Maybe it's a bizarre trap by the police?
Patchbatch · 08/04/2022 08:14

I found using NSPCC guidance as a rationale for why it's okay particularly outrageous. I honestly can't imagine any sort of circumstance where this is ever okay, where an adult think yes my child needs to go to this with me, it's disgusting and I would worry about their parenting. The only thing I think children (sadly) should be aware of at that age is the anatomical name for their body parts and the knowledge that they have a safe space in which they can tell someone if they have been abused. In no way shape or form does should this be delivered in this way.

OutingHobby · 08/04/2022 08:16

I found using NSPCC guidance as a rationale for why it's okay particularly outrageous hmm is it worth flagging this with the NSPCC

tabbycatstripy · 08/04/2022 08:17

“I am unable to comment as I have not seen the show. Have any of you..??”

Fully able to comment without seeing it that taking your young child to see naked strangers talking about sex is not okay.

PrelateChuckles · 08/04/2022 08:18

Age 5 kids are still under the Early Years Framework at school. The same Stage as nursery and preschool children.

As many have said, aiming to expand sex ed could be a great aim, for older kids/YAs. But it needs to be age appropriate, and this isn't. At all.

2fallsfromSSA · 08/04/2022 08:19

Sorry I have not yet read the thread properly, just the first couple of pages. It's not just Bristol, it's in Norwich too, funded by the arts council, the same group which funded the #Rainbowdildobuttmonkey delight.

SSA has commented. twitter.com/SafeSchools_UK/status/1512077174706040850?s=20&t=IWmUkfHkPcagyGvJDvwJSA

I saw someone saying it's in line with the curriculum. I don't think 5 year olds watching adults get naked and talking about sexual pleasure is in the curriculum.

I'm appalled education professionals are defending it. What has happened to safeguarding.
