30 miles for a duvet

Sorry, this is quite tedious!

Our duvet and pillows got accidentally damaged and we had to replace them quickly. DH insisted he needed a 15tog king size duvet and two pillows. Highest tog at Tesco nearby was 13.5. Not good enough. Only alternative was the Range which had 15 tog King size but was 30 mile round trip.

So we drove there tonight, I just got inside before closing and managed to get the last 15 tog king size in the shop (£39.99 expensive, right?). Result. Also instead of getting two pillows I just got one very thick one which has four removable layers, a reasonable compromise I thought. He was waiting in the car outside.

Not good enough. He was annoyed that I'd paid nearly £40 for a duvet and insisted that I have to go to buy another pillow tomorrow and won't even try the thick one I bought.

I had to laugh at this and he asked me what I was laughing at. I said I thought he was being a bit precious and demanding (he has lots of previous form for this).

He's now not speaking to me and is sitting in the other room.

Well, was I unreasonable to pay £40 for a duvet and only to get one thick pillow when he'd asked for two?

15 tog?!?! Do you live in the arctic?

I live up north and we rarely have more than 10 tog in the depths of winter.

And £40 is not pricy for a long size duvet.

hulahooper2 · 06/04/2022 22:38

£40 is cheap for a duvet , why didn’t you m add kee Ed him go into the shop with you ? Or try ordering online . Personally iI prefer 4 seasons duvets

Noisenough · 06/04/2022 22:39

I don't get what he's annoyed at he was willing to waste the (eye-wateringly expensive) fuel to get the duvet to them moan. about £40. He should have gone and got it himself, unless of course the hi-vis jacket was the ONLY item of clothing he had on 😂

NerrSnerr · 06/04/2022 22:40

I don't understand why you went with him. If the jacket was a problem he could have just taken it off.

Octomore · 06/04/2022 22:40

And yes, if he's that fussy he should buy his own bloody duvet and pillows. Could he not take the hi-viz jacket off?

AnastasiaRomanov · 06/04/2022 22:43

So he wants a duvet for his own bed. One you don’t sleep in. Why didn’t he drive to get it and go into the shop himself? Lazy bastard. Also that is a very cheap price for a duvet.
You’re being a mug and he’s a controlling idiot.

OvOvO · 06/04/2022 22:46

How do you "accidentally" damage a kingsize duvet AND pillows?
unless you set fire to DH in his bed

SD1978 · 06/04/2022 22:49

That's a cheap duvet- mine cost well over £100 and I thought I was doing well with that! I am picky as hell about pillows- but he should have come and picked his own- although I also would have side eyed anyone who bought a pillow that had layers- if he changing it from reading to lying height every night and hating it. If he had issues with price- he should have bought it himself or done a bit more research into prices for what he wanted specifically. Send him out to buy his own pillow tomorrow.

gah2teenagers · 06/04/2022 22:51

He sounds like a complete knob. I’d spend about £100 on a duvet. The pillow sounds good as well. Might have a look at those.

ThinWomansBrain · 06/04/2022 22:58

@Iknowacrackingowlsanctuary

I'd smother him with the bloody thing
did it have plastic packaging? Love the irony of smothering him with the duvet, but the plasticbag it came in would be more effective Grin
PriamFarrl · 06/04/2022 22:59

@kennelmaid

Why didn't he go in the shop and choose his own? Because he was wearing a hi viz jacket and he would be embarrassed Grin
I assume the jacket is removable.
Samarie123 · 06/04/2022 23:01

Hmm
Maybe you need more sex instead more togs

TheMoreYouKnow · 06/04/2022 23:01

He should've gone in himself instead of lording it in the car and then have the cheek to sulk. Just laugh!

Nnique · 06/04/2022 23:02

What a baby. Tell him to get his own duvet and pillow.

Bornsloppy · 06/04/2022 23:04

"I would drive 30 miles, and I would drive 30 more, to be the wife who bought a duvet...."

Hadenoughofbloodycovid · 06/04/2022 23:05

YABU to think £40 is expensive for a king size duvet.

Galliano · 06/04/2022 23:06

Quite surprised that of all the fairly odd aspects of this the thread title you went for was the distance of the trip. That is definitely not the remarkable part of the saga!

lisaandalan · 06/04/2022 23:06

£40 is cheap, but would have ordered online x

EmmaH2022 · 06/04/2022 23:07

@kennelmaid

We have separate bedrooms, that's why the duvet is just for him.

I know what you're going to say - separate bedrooms means we have bigger problems than a 15 tog duvet and one pillow.

Not at all But I am puzzled why you chose his stuff on that case. He didn't buy his own so can't complain.
froufroufrou · 06/04/2022 23:11

Yowzers! He sounds like a right PITA.
Is he going through what I call, ‘the manopause’? Usually the precursor to them becoming a full time grumpy old man.
You poor thing.

FeloniusGru · 06/04/2022 23:12

YABU to pander to this nonsense. Don’t give it anymore headspace. He can sort his own pillows and duvet.

Madre123 · 06/04/2022 23:12

40 pound for a quilt...I pay double that just for a pillow! Next time send him shopping

Doggirl · 06/04/2022 23:13

One of the benefits of doing a lot of camping with a rucksack is you learn to make almost anything comfortable. Stuff extra clothes in a fleece to make a pillow. Put whatever you have over yourself if you want to be warmer (DP's ancient 13.5tog down duvet no longer lives up to its rating, so we bung over an opened sleeping bag).
And yes, once you've bought a decent down duvet of any size, £40 for a king isn't expensive.

nettie434 · 06/04/2022 23:13

£40 is an excellent price for a 15 tog king size duvet, as your DH would discover with the most cursory search. The thick pillow seems excellent. I would much prefer 1 thick pillow to 2 flat old pillows. He could at least try it. He is the unreasonable one!
