AIBU to think people are ruining their teeth with veneers

I keep seeing people going to Turkey for veneers where their teeth and filed down to tiny points and whiter than white 'teeth' are put in their place, not natural at all. I keep seeing things also saying these 'teeth' need replacing after x amount of years etc..

We call them Turkish tombstones in this house. Grin

earsup · 04/04/2022 15:01

If the teeth are filed down to a point then they are having crowns fitted...i used to teach english at a dental school abroad....so the dentists could converse with uk patients etc....new style veneers remove just the tooth surface at the front and are good for badly filled or damaged teetth...my dentist in uk says she sees teens who have had a whole load of crowns done abroad and then develop problems later....crowns are a last resort after a filling and a veneer....it looks fake and awful.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 04/04/2022 15:06

YANBU
I have one veneer on a damaged tooth and it's great but perceptively bigger than my other teeth. A whole smile full of them would look so weird. That's why their teeth always look too big for their mouths.

Getoffmyshoes · 04/04/2022 15:07

They are crowns not veneers. I have a friend who had veneers done by a top dentist in the UK to correct small looking teeth and they look fabulous and very natural.

Greysofa · 04/04/2022 15:08

I was wondering about this the other day……I mean, do these veneers need replacing? Would you then qualify for NHS dentistry (if you can find one ha) if there was an issue with the ‘stumps’ that are left?

Composite bonding (?) has been mentioned on here and I quite like the sound of that better

RincewindsHat · 04/04/2022 15:13

A lot of people are getting composite bonds now, you get super thin 'veneers' made out of the same stuff as white fillings, and they're glued on top of your existing teeth and will eventually come off with no damage at all to your teeth beneath. Best option if you hate your wonky teeth or want to fill gaps where Invisalign just won't do.

Yes bonding is a good option and I don’t know why people don’t have it more often in place of veneers. It’s cheaper and less invasive and isn’t permanent. Obviously sometimes the veneers look wonderful, of course they do, not all of them look overwhelming. But there does seem to be a trend of super white, massive tombstone teeth. Rylan can pull them off but most people cAnnot!

We have a friend who has been to Turkey for this - she was so happy, so I can't tell her they look awful and there was nothing wrong with her teeth before.
She's had loads of work done (teeth, nose, gastric band, boobs, cheeks, lips) , all abroad and all of it unnecessary - she was beautiful to start off with and now looks more and more fake and I know she's trying to look younger (she's only 33) . I suspect she'll keep going until the money runs out or something goes wrong.
We all tell her she doesn't need anything doing but she's addicted.

So many types of cosmetic dental treatment result in a charmless smile that makes you do an involuntary shudder, Uncanny Valley style. There are several dentists at DC’s school and they have terrible teeth exactly of the type you describe.

I hate Invisalign teeth too - especially where they’re all the same length and shape and far too long, like an ageing horse.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 04/04/2022 15:16

My implant dentist advised me not to go there.

Georgeskitchen · 04/04/2022 15:25

Some of them do look kind of strange, like too big for the owners mouth!!

OMG12 · 04/04/2022 15:30

I had veneers put on my very badly discoloured teeth when I was 15 now over 30 years later one has been damaged so needs replacing. But all done in the UK and off white to match rest of teeth.

toomanydogsandcats · 04/04/2022 15:34

I did this and don't have points. They just slightly shaved them and stuck the new 8nes on top. I also had a gastric sleeve there, at Irmet. Op on Monday, was back at work on the Sunday and it probably saved my life.

Invisalign are a type of retainer/brace for correcting your existing teeth? Invisalign don't make teeth longer or the change their shape, although people may have additional work such as veneers or composite bonds after. Some but not all do.
ZaraSizeMedium · 04/04/2022 15:38

Yes, having your teeth filed down to tiny stumps is ruining them.

We call them Tic Tac Teeth round here and you can spot them a mile off.

GodspeedJune · 04/04/2022 15:39

Yanbu. I find it particularly sad when young people with healthy strong teeth have them all stripped down and replaced like this. It looks awful and loses the natural character of an individual smile.

Thatsplentyjack · 04/04/2022 15:40

Well obviously it's ruining their teeth.

ethelredonagoodday · 04/04/2022 15:40

I had some done years ago, on my two front top teeth. The dentist at the time didn't explain what the process would be; had i known I would never have agreed to it. Mine have been on for over 20 years now, but in that time I've had them replaced, or sometimes they've cracked, or 'popped off'. For now (crosses everything) they seem ok, but I DREAD one of them failing and leaving me with a hideous, witchy, pointed tooth. Awful.

No shit? I wonder why? Could it be that many many people are going overseas for dental work because they simply cannot afford the prices here? And guess what? The majority of them return with excellent dental work having paid a fraction of the price. Bit of course, we only hear the anecdotes about bad results …often from UK dentists themselves. I have had excellent dental work in Turkey, having suffered a lifetime of bodged and terrifying dental experiences in the UK. That is what people forget - there are bad practitioners everywhere, so a little less ignorance and sneering judgement would go a long way (this last comment not aimed at you shehasadiamond

Candleabra · 04/04/2022 15:51

They do look weird.
They were always doing this on 10 years younger. Admittedly some people had awful teeth but it seems mad to put veneers on basically healthy teeth.

I was offered veneers for my leg teeth. Declined and took composite bonding.

Yes...far too expensive here and i find that the young dentists now just push cosmetic work on private terms etc...i taught in colombia and saw the dentist over there...excellent quality and treatment....£40 for a crown and £5 for a white filling...he replaced all my ugly amalgam ones....never had any issues with the work done...also have seen a lady dentist in suburbs of Antalya....not one of those make over smile places that katie price used, again excellent work and good prices...will go again this year for more work.
SausagePourHomme · 04/04/2022 16:01

I've had my veneers for about 25 years, never a bother off them. Touch wood
