AIBU to think people are ruining their teeth with veneers

I keep seeing people going to Turkey for veneers where their teeth and filed down to tiny points and whiter than white 'teeth' are put in their place, not natural at all. I keep seeing things also saying these 'teeth' need replacing after x amount of years etc..

@stayathomer

Am in Ireland and I always feel sick reading dental threads. I already had bad teeth due to an very slight (so they didn't fix) overlap in my front teeth (still there) and two baby teeth that never became big teeth so were removed but with each child I lost so much calcium. At the time we had money issues and with even a check up being a hundred euro I ended up losing 3 more teeth as I couldn't afford root canals. I am now too embarrassed to go to the dentist and just keep my mouth shut all the time and dream of a lottery win so I could get my teeth fixed on the quiet!!
Please don't worry what the dentist will think - honestly, you wouldn't believe the kind of things that dentists see every week, far worse than you describe. All a dentist will be interested in is how to help you.

I hate the look of them but I am blessed with good teeth that are straight and white ..
I imagine it must be hard to have shit teeth but the fake look is unattractive to me ..
Daniel on MAFS has ridiculous teeth , the white and shape is just all wrong ..
each to their own though 🤷‍♀️

I'm the same. My teeth are rotten and I'm very embarrassed about them. I can't afford the cost of getting them fixed, even on the NHS.

@BingoBungle

So many types of cosmetic dental treatment result in a charmless smile that makes you do an involuntary shudder, Uncanny Valley style. There are several dentists at DC’s school and they have terrible teeth exactly of the type you describe.

I hate Invisalign teeth too - especially where they’re all the same length and shape and far too long, like an ageing horse.

Invisalign is a brace! Won't change anything but slightly misaligned teeth.

I had crowns on my two front teeth when I was 14 after they had been smashed (don’t ask, that’s a different thread!). They lasted well for 45 years, when a gap developed at the top of one. I had it carefully matched for colour by my excellent British Dentist who had the lab guy come in to take a look at me too! That one was then replaced, matches the other one perfectly and 4 years later, the original one is still going strong. I would only have cosmetic dentistry if I needed it (including for aesthetic purposes in the case of a real problem) and avoid tic tac teeth like the plague. I don’t get how people who choose to have those, the black slug style eyebrows and balloon lips don’t realise that style of face doesn’t look quite human!

I have noticed a few people on TV whose mouths look different - their teeth look bigger. Presumably they have had these veneers done, and they remind me of false teeth. I remember reading or seeing something about a woman who inadvertently had this done and was very upset. If your teeth are in a terrible state then I can understand it, but if they are OK I think it's unnecessary and not particularly attractive.

I've had seven teeth composite bonded today! God I'm tired, it was three hours in the dentist's chair.

I love the result. I'm in Scotland and it cost £1600.

I really want composite bonding but having read this thread it seems you have to whiten your teeth before and it is putting me off as they are very sensitive. Can I ask if you had to whiten your teeth before the procedure?

MorrisZapp congratulations!!

I'm hoping you (and I!) Find a way to even get enough done that we don't have to be this way for lifeFlowers I once saw an episode of first dates where a guy in his 60s returned to first dates with new teeth. He had rotten, black and no teeth before and he came back with normal teeth. Not insanely white or overly straight, but teeth that looked no different than the average person's and it absolutely blew my mind. He said it cost a lot and was a year of pain but it was worth it and I still think about it

Honestly thanks so so much and I will get there, but they have to be disgusted. When you're in a dentist's chair and they and their nurses have amazing teeth and there calling out every single tooth for work it's the most demoralizing thing. And this is before I lost the teeth with the kids

MorrisZapp · 07/04/2022 09:21

Thanks! I'll post pics later.

No, absolutely no whitening required and in fact they can't do CB on recently whitened teeth because the bonds don't work as well.

My teeth are very sensitive so even though mine are yellow I'm never going to have them whitened.

My dentist was an absolute dream, she was so sympathetic and fully numbed me before doing a thing. Not going to lie, it's three hours of discomfort but there was no pain at all.

They do have to abrade your teeth first but mine does it with an amazing air whizzer which uses walnut shells or something, you don't feel it at all and it smells nice!

MorrisZapp · 07/04/2022 09:22

She carefully matched the colour so they look natural, and hand carved slight lines in the front to look the way actual teeth do. Artistry.

MorrisZapp · 07/04/2022 11:30

Here goes! My teeth before any treatment (apologies if you're eating!)

I'll have clinical before and afters tomorrow so I'll post that too

Stroopwaffle5000 · 07/04/2022 11:37

I had my veneers done 20 years ago and they are still going strong. They are off white and not too big for my mouth. I hated to smile before so they've done wonders for my confidence!

Crunched · 07/04/2022 11:39

MorrisZapp That looks really effective and natural. No wonder you are delighted.

EliyanahM · 07/04/2022 11:48

Yeah, when a dentist saw my teeth a few years ago, he shook his head and sighed. And that will stay with me..

stayathomer · 07/04/2022 12:16

Morriszap oh my god I'm so happy for you!!! Your first pictures are my teeth only I have gaps. That is amazing!! Can I ask how much it cost?( tell me no if you want, sorry to pry)

MorrisZapp · 07/04/2022 12:23

Oh thank you! Lovely to get nice feedback on my new gnashers! I'm happy to answer anything including cost.

I only had my top teeth done! Even the invisalign bit. I had 'invisalign lite' but I had three lots of 12 trays plus a final ten week refinement. I think it cost about 2 grand?

The composite bonding was to seven teeth and cost £1700 including a new, lab made retainer.

Not cheap but to me it really is worth every penny.

AmberLynn1536 · 07/04/2022 12:36

Wow your teeth are transformed! I would be delighted too! Thank you so much for all the information it’s so great getting real information from people who have gone through it, not having to whiten my teeth has made my day! Thanks Morris! Smile

Pineappleheart · 07/04/2022 18:16

Any dentists here to give me advice? Chemotherapy left me with receding gums which look awful, my dentist said she could fill them but it would make them look very long, is that really the only treatment available?

LutzClutz · 07/04/2022 18:28

Bookmarking this thread. Your teeth look great @MorrisZapp!

I have worn down enamel on my front teeth and the dentist suggested veneers but I was quoted what you paid, but for only 4 teeth...plus I'd like a bit of whitening. Not fluorescent white, just slightly whiter.

I'm tempted to go abroad, though it would be to my parents' country (it's not Turkey), but I haven't decided yet. I wonder if the reason it's cheaper abroad is due to using cheaper materials, or is it the labour that's cheaper? I know dentists in my "old country" don't make as much as dentists in the Uk so that could be why?
