AIBU to think people are ruining their teeth with veneers

I keep seeing people going to Turkey for veneers where their teeth and filed down to tiny points and whiter than white 'teeth' are put in their place, not natural at all. I keep seeing things also saying these 'teeth' need replacing after x amount of years etc..

Years ago there was an mn post by someone who had started the process and had her teeth taken down to the stumps and then broke up with her boyfriend who was paying for the process and couldn’t afford to continue.

I don’t recall the outcome so it was possibly a troll post but it’s always stuck with me!

MurmuratingStarling · 04/04/2022 21:32

@MissyB1

You are clearly describing crowns not veneers. I have veneers (done 25 years ago). My whole tooth is underneath- not a stump.
Yes that's what I thought.

Think it was Katy prove who’s be pictured without her veneers and her teeth look terrible

YawnAndTheyWillYawnToo · 04/04/2022 21:42

Katie price

StoneofDestiny · 04/04/2022 21:43

I can't imagine sitting still while my teeth were filed down to a point - I find it scary enough going for a scale and polish!

Ericaequites · 04/04/2022 21:50

I have crowns forty years old that have discolored, but never bother me. Replacing them would be foolish. It’s not natural to have gleaming white perfect teeth.
Smoking pot or tobacco, or taking snuff destroys teeth. My sister has smoked since high school, and is filling an upper plate on the installment plan.

How do people know where to go in Turkey for good dental work? Asking for a friend.
Check out this youtube video , he's a car guy who got his teeth done in Turkey. Link to clinic in description. About 12 minutes in he does the teeth bit. Think he said cost in UK was £20000, got it done for £8000 including weeks accommodation in Turkey. Hence UK dentists not happy.

Can anyone post a picture of what they mean by 'good' subtle work, like the composite thing?

I also want to see the Turkey teeth I don't know anyone who has had this done Grin

@AbsentmindedWoman I have some composite bonding done to my upper front teeth

Minfilia · 04/04/2022 22:16

@dustydriver

I've never heard of composite bonding before and have one badly discoloured dead tooth. Would they be suitable for something like that? The rest of my teeth are quite yellow as well but very sensitive so I've not looked at bleaching.
Before the dentist will apply composite bonding, they should get the rest of your teeth up to scratch first.

That would mean fixing your brown tooth and then you have to have a course of bleaching to get the yellow teeth as white as possible (the caps are translucent so the yellow would shine through).

It was the bleaching that out DH off as he apparently has soft enamel and didn’t want to risk pain.

@HotMess21 your teeth look great! You must be very pleased Smile

@AbsentmindedWoman Thank you! Yes, I am very happy - I can't stop smiling! 😁

@groovygroovy once you have worn the enamel down its very difficult to rebuild as you loose crown height and become overclosed, this can be difficult to sort.

You can place filling material to prevent sensitivity once dentine has been exposed but to actuallt rebuild crown height is more challenging. This is actually another reason why a full mouth of crowns as per turkey teeth can cause problems is because a full mouth of rehabilitation can be very challenging to ensure your occlusion is appropriate and not putting stress on individual teeth or causing wear on certain teeth.

No there isn't really much apart from a bite sheild to prevent it. Making sure you have a low acid frequency will help

Lu901 · 05/04/2022 11:37

Just get tooth bonding if anyone likes or wants venners. that's what I've had done looks like veneers and you don't have to shave down your teeth to have it done. Isn't costly and quick to do. Had it done to front of my teeth that were damaged.

CounsellorTroi · 05/04/2022 11:40

My teeth are not as white or even as I’d like, but they aren’t unsightly and I have good oral health, no gum disease, never had an abscess or needed a root canal. So my inclination is to just leave well alone.

GroovyGroovy · 05/04/2022 11:42

Thanks CertainUncertain for your response. Food for thought.

GroovyGroovy · 05/04/2022 11:43

And Carrotten.

PollyPutTheKettleOnKettleOn · 05/04/2022 11:53

@GroovyGroovy definitely wear the night guard. I have one, very comfortable and makes a huge difference. Especially if you get pain from grinding. It really doesn't compare with the various trays and bits of plastic they stick in your mouth during examinations and treatments at the dentist if that's what you're worried about.

ShaneTwane · 05/04/2022 11:59

@hotmess21 your teeth are gorgeous 😍

marbleeyes · 05/04/2022 12:19

It's a lot cheaper in Turkey and they are quite advanced with cosmetic surgeries and dental procedures. However, they need to be replaced I think it's like every 10 + years or so. So if you don't have that kind of money in 10 years time, then you are pretty fucked or all the people who needed it to be replaced in the middle of pandemic who couldn't travel, which is one of the many reasons why I would never get it done at this age (mid 30s). My teeth have been through a lot, partly my blame for smoking in my younger years, not looking after it as much as I could have, but also by the hands of my nhs dentist butchering it but still I wouldn't get veneers done. I'm hoping to get Invisalign this year.

pooonastick · 05/04/2022 12:29

Totally understand that dentistry is expensive and out of reach for many. However when you have major cosmetic work done and you are not in the same country to have regular follow ups, things can go wrong . Reading some of the comments here , reinforces to me that people just don't understand what is involved in major dental work . You cant just do the work and then not put in the hard work to look after it. Many overseas cases that I saw in my 3 decades of working, did all the work, didn't give any preventative advice and certainly weren't around for when things went wrong. Language could also be a barrier.They were also over ambitious with what was done which gives the patient what they want at the time but five years down the track, the work starts failing. The failures can be catastrophic, leading to premature tooth loss meaning dentures are the only option.
Decay can so easily get underneath crowns and veneers and the patient has no idea until it may be too late. Having a regular dentist place the work and do the follow up is the only way to ensure that you mitigate this risk.

MrOllivander · 05/04/2022 12:41

@GroovyGroovy

Since we have so many dental experts on here Smile may I ask a question?

Every time for the last 10 years I go to the dentist he suggests a fitted tooth shield to wear at night. He says I am wearing my teeth down on their tops through grinding them at night and soon the enamel will be gone.

The thing is I don't fancy wearing a great big plastic gummy thing in my mouth at night. If it gets to the stage where the enamel does wear down, is there something I could do? Only interested in medical, not appearance.

Otherwise, touchwood, my teeth are in pretty good nick for my age (62).

Would love to know if any experts on here (there seem to be!)

Wear it! I cracked a tooth through clenching/grinding. They're not too bulky and you get used to it Do I like wearing it? No Do I want to not break my teeth? Yes Grin
