AIBU to think people are ruining their teeth with veneers

I keep seeing people going to Turkey for veneers where their teeth and filed down to tiny points and whiter than white 'teeth' are put in their place, not natural at all. I keep seeing things also saying these 'teeth' need replacing after x amount of years etc..

I bet there are very few people - in this era of fluoride toothpaste - that have lost their teeth. I know there are an awful lot of people whose insecurities can be exploited by dentists with minimal aesthetic insight.

you really think so? alcohol addiction drug addiction - heroin, meth, Depression causing someone not to look after teeth Bulimia even things like tongue piercings can damage teeth

we have to keep them in working order for a lifetime, in my parent's peer group everyone had falsies by the age of 40. I think this is preferable

PinkSyCo · 04/04/2022 19:18

Yeah I was half tempted to get mine done until I saw a picture of Katie Prices stumps.Apparently the stumps rotting under the veneers cause terrible bad breath too.🤢

HotChoc10 · 04/04/2022 19:30

I always think about when people get elderly and don't necessarily have the mental or physical capabilities to get themselves to appointments and what have you. Are there going to be loads of old people with tiny little fangs in nursing homes in 30-40 years?

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 04/04/2022 19:33

I know four people who have gone to turkey for a new smile and they now all have near on identical teeth. Really squared off and smooth.

I think most people would look better with their own teeth, maybe straightened with a brace and/or a little bit of composite to balance out but with some character still left.

CuntyMcBollocks · 04/04/2022 19:38

I don't think they look nice or natural at all. Veneers are all too square and perfect, and to me they look like the zip on a suitcase.

GroovyGroovy · 04/04/2022 19:40

Since we have so many dental experts on here Smile may I ask a question?

Every time for the last 10 years I go to the dentist he suggests a fitted tooth shield to wear at night. He says I am wearing my teeth down on their tops through grinding them at night and soon the enamel will be gone.

The thing is I don't fancy wearing a great big plastic gummy thing in my mouth at night. If it gets to the stage where the enamel does wear down, is there something I could do? Only interested in medical, not appearance.

Otherwise, touchwood, my teeth are in pretty good nick for my age (62).

Would love to know if any experts on here (there seem to be!)

idiotwhoworries · 04/04/2022 19:41

To be honest I did not read up enough on the process and the thought of my teeth being filed right down does make me feel sick - I just did not realise they would do this. (my own fault) - however the results are amazing.

I am genuinely amazed people do these procedures without reading exactly what happens.

Very glad it worked well for you though!

I lost a molar from a stupid sporting accident.

You are also forgetting that tooth loss also comes from gum disease, and lots of illnesses (in other parts of the body) can affect the gums, so compromise dental health all round.

hobbledyhoy · 04/04/2022 19:48

As soon as I read this post that picture of Katie Price from months ago popped into my head. It has given me nightmares ever since, why you would willingly take your own teeth and chisel them to stumps just fills me with abject horror.
Thank you to the pp who put that picture up just to reignite my anxiety dreams ConfusedGrin

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 04/04/2022 19:56

I had porcelain veneers put on privately about 20 years ago and they have been life changing.
No stumps- is this not crowns?? And it was quick and fantastic result. Best £500 I ever spent.

orangeisthenewpuce · 04/04/2022 19:58

How do people know where to go in Turkey for good dental work? Asking for a friend.

MissyB1 · 04/04/2022 20:01

You are clearly describing crowns not veneers.
I have veneers (done 25 years ago). My whole tooth is underneath- not a stump.

dworky · 04/04/2022 20:05

Agree but often what are called veneers are no such thing.
Veneers were originally exactly that - a thin veneer stuck to the surface of the tooth. Somehow, the teeth being ground away to a small peg & covered with whole fake ones, began to be popularly know as veneers & I can only suspect the reason is to minimise how brutally destructive to healthy teeth, the procedure actually is.

@MondayTuesdayWednesday

You do Invisalign before the composite bonding.
I'm in the process of doing it now. 14 weeks of Invisalign, then you whiten your teeth to the desired shape, then have the composite bonding put on top.
No drilling, minimal shaving (very slightly, you wouldn't even notice it) the shaving is to leave space between your teeth for them to move with the Invisalign.

After that, then composite bonding. Look far more natural, they can be taken off, and they don't damage your teeth underneath. But you do need quite straight, white teeth before hand for them to work. (If you're going for the veneer type look.)

It is cheaper than a set of porcelain veneers £18k ish here. But a full set of crowns in turkey are 4K. So not cheaper outside of the U.K.

My friend has had a full set of turkey teeth and they're so big and white. She loves them but I couldn't bring myself to have my teeth shaved to pegs.

Crimesean · 04/04/2022 20:07
@Crimesean I know what Invisalign is, and what it’s supposed to do, but I think people - perhaps on the self-interested advice of their dentist - never know when to stop. Invisalign gives you absurdly uniform teeth, and the peculiar straight edge to every tooth that is the composite finishing gives that horrible equine look, especially when the teeth are augmented too far. As a PP said, it loses the natural character of an individual smile.
Yeah, you don't know what Invisalign is - it is literally just braces. It makes your teeth straight, but it can't make them all the same size/shape, that's veneers. It works exactly the same way as wire braces do. Confused

There are no composites involved!

Crimesean · 04/04/2022 20:09

@BingoBungle I think you're thinking of what @GeminiTwin is talking about - veneers etc. after Invisalign.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure - if you wear away your enamel your teeth will never be really healthy again unfortunately. You will get used to the mouthguard, nowadays they're very thin and barely noticeable.
GroovyGroovy · 04/04/2022 20:17

Thanks Crime, but is there another way? Anything else I can do? That is what I'm wondering, with all the new technology described above? Though it all sounds very expensive. I might seek a second opinion from another dentist.

BlueThursday · 04/04/2022 20:22

I have a crown after an accident. I can taste the gold.

The thought of a full mouth of gold taste makes me feel quite ill

Mangofandangoo · 04/04/2022 20:25

DH had composite bonding and it's done wonders for his smile and confidence. He had it in the U.K.

Your dentist is the expert Grin. Pretty sure that's the person you should listen to rather than random people on Mumsnet

Yes I know Smile and was replying to another poster who said they give you long square teeth - as you say Invisalign will straighten your teeth but they don’t make them long and square! Obviously is do the composites after it can fill gaps and even them up.

GroovyGroovy · 04/04/2022 20:57

^Yes Tidlo. But I think a 2nd/3rd opinion might be good. I'm not sure I trusted his opinion tbh - after all it is a sale!

Invisalign has literally nothing to do with ‘ ‘composite finishing’ - Invisalign straightens the teeth you already have, it’s the same teeth at the end but straighter. If someone goes on to have other work that’s something separate, it’s not Invisalign.
