Porn star martini Pizza Express

Why are Pizza Express advertising 'Porn Star Martinis' on every table at their restaurants? AIBU to find this disgusting for a family restaurant? I don't really wish to explain to my 6 year old what it is.

OP posts:
AskingforaBaskin · 02/04/2022 12:54

Keep saying I don't understand. I do.

You believe that by being exposed to the word porn it is making porn as normal as any other aspect of every day life. Something that is just happening.

Money is absolutely important to me. The more of these I sell the closer to my bonus I am.

I am also logical about how business works.

I do not believe your point. I do understand it. I just do not agree.

I do not think by exposing children to the word pornstar that they will normalise porn.

AskingforaBaskin · 02/04/2022 12:54

@tigerbird

And the social pressures on women to be okay with porn are very aptly demonstrated in this thread.

I invite anyone unsure to visit the front page of pornhub and watch a few videos. Then come back and tell us that you feel comfortable with that culture being used as a marketing tool to sell drinks.

Have seen pornhub. Still fine with the drink.

Do you want to say I don't understand again?

tigerbird · 02/04/2022 12:56

You believe that by being exposed to the word porn it is making porn as normal as any other aspect of every day life. Something that is just happening.

So Baskin, how do you think this is “just happening”? Do tell.

AskingforaBaskin · 02/04/2022 12:57

I meant that in the context that porn is normal and just happening around them and a normal aspect of everyday life.

AskingforaBaskin · 02/04/2022 12:58

And I don't believe it is. Just that the argument is that the drink name is a gateway for children to have that belief.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 02/04/2022 12:58

Porn isn't going anywhere soon and this isn't normalising anything. At the age of 18 (or before for some) they'll already be in bars and will be able to order one. Unless you're suggesting that the drink be renamed across the board.
Agree - those talking about older kids will see them in bars anyway.
Does sound like some want the drinks renamed altogether.

tigerbird · 02/04/2022 12:58

Then you’re making it clear you like porn culture and think it’s OK if it makes you a bonus.

We understand you very well. You’re fine with unethical exploitation if it makes money. You’re part of the problem. Crack on, but be honest about it rather than trying to pretend you’re not.

Lunar27 · 02/04/2022 12:59

@tigerbird.

I can genuinely see the damage porn has, and understand your argument, but can you point to aspects of our society that normalise porn in a similar way to the way Pizza Express is with this drinks flyer?

And how does this differ to other family restaurants that have drinks menus that list Pornstars Martinis. Is it the promotion of this drink in isolation or that it's called this in the first place? Are you suggesting that the drink be renamed altogether?

tigerbird · 02/04/2022 13:01

@AskingforaBaskin

I meant that in the context that porn is normal and just happening around them and a normal aspect of everyday life.
Why wasn’t it a normal aspect of everyday life twenty years ago then, if it’s a normal aspect of everyday life now?

It’s been normalised. That’s what the word normalised means. FFS.

This thread just reminds me of that comedy sketch about the Stupid Agency.

NurseBernard · 02/04/2022 13:02
@NurseBernard. You are spectacularly patronising and rude Flowers
As I’ve said many, many times before on here - believe it or not, I’m not patronising in real life.

But the quality of debate on MN really brings it out in me.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 02/04/2022 13:02

People aren't stupid just because they don't agree with you!
What part of that is so hard for you to grasp?!

GoodJanetBadJanet · 02/04/2022 13:03

Its not debate though is it when some are unable to debate without patronising and insulting others as they're unable to grasp the fact that people do not. Have. To. Agree. With. You.

tigerbird · 02/04/2022 13:04

Well Janet, tell me now, do any of those girls being choked on pornhub look like “stars” to you?

Absolutely this ^^

AskingforaBaskin · 02/04/2022 13:05

@tigerbird you are using that quote out of context. I was proving I understood the argument.

I don't actually agree.

Electrox · 02/04/2022 13:07

It is inappropriate. Just give it another name in family restaurants.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 02/04/2022 13:07

you are using that quote out of context.
Yep, standard

tigerbird · 02/04/2022 13:13

Perhaps pizza express could try naming the next promotional cocktail the “rape bomb” or “sexy pimp” or something similar - it’ll just bring the money rolling in. After all, money is much more important and words have no connections to society or whatever!

You’re a fun sucking old prude with no sense of humour who’s bad for business if you object to the kids having a “virgin” one! The “virgin rape bomb” would be totally suitable for kids, it’s got no alcohol in it and if they ask what rape is just tell ‘em it’s a grown up word and you don’t know anyway. Come to think of it, if they ask what a virgin is you can pretend you don’t know what that is too.

Lunar27 · 02/04/2022 13:14

@NurseBernard.

No worries. I'm sure you're not IRL.

However, whilst you have a good argument, the quality of debate isn't based exclusively on having a solid POV. Quality is also based on the ability to respect the views of others without resorting to ad hominem.

I'll stop lecturing now GrinFlowers

tigerbird · 02/04/2022 13:15

Come to think of it, just add a “handsome punter” cocktail for the lads, and if the kiddies ask what it means, you can tell em it’s someone who steers a boat. All good fun!

Virgin is already used in the context of drinks and is easily explained to anyone of any age.

The rest wouldn't really work and are pointless arguments because there is no market for them.

tigerbird · 02/04/2022 13:21

Yes there’s no market for them because they haven’t been normalised. That’s the entire point. Porn is normalised.

Though there are plenty of normalisations of “pimp” going around. People will try to tell you it’s about making something fancy, but of course it came from the original meaning of pimp. It’s now normal to compare doing you car up with pimping out a prostitute because the usage has been normalised.

This is the entire point of the argument that you are demonstrating here.

How do you think the word virgin became normal? Because it’s become culturally normal to compare something “pure” to a girl who hasn’t had sex. One of society’s most deep-rooted misogynist forms of thinking.

Why don’t you tell me too if the girls in pornhub videos look like “stars” to you?

tigerbird · 02/04/2022 13:23

And I can tell you that trying to explain why so many Christmas carols are all about “yon virgin mother and child” to a clever 5 year old is definitely not easy.

It’s just been normalised so that you think that way.

AskingforaBaskin · 02/04/2022 13:25

I don't really use pornhub only went on before as something was mentioned and I went to look. It was a topic and didn't watch anything. Ao3 does it for me.

Virgin has multiple definitions. Has for a long long long time. Or is your next project Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

The words you are using are directly violent definitions.

Pimp has been used but the cocktails weren't popular.

AskingforaBaskin · 02/04/2022 13:26

I have.

A person who has not had sex.
Then had to explain how she had a baby without sex and simply explained that none of the story was real and as such they could make up whatever they wanted and it didn't have to follow real life.
